Tesco delivery - what happens?

DeliveryNewbie · 26/02/2024 13:32

I am getting a food delivery from Tesco later this week but have never done it before. I’m autistic so want to know exactly how it will work if anyone can help?

Do you take it from them at the door? It doesn’t come in bags so what does it come in? What do you have to do? Are you supposed to tip the delivery person? Anything else important to know?

Thanks 😁

Yes from door. Though some will come in if you ask/ want. It comes in big crates so you need to empty each item out. Think about where you would put the items as you unload. They are usually friendly in my experience.

OrbitingTheEarth · 26/02/2024 13:35

Hi its all really simple so don't worry. Firstly no need to tip the delivery ever so don't worry about that. It doesn't come in bags unless you opt for it so when i open the door they are standing there with crates with the goods in. I believe if you ask they will carry the crates to a room of your choice but we take bags to the front door and pile it into the bags. Normally they are going back to van to get more crates so they stand there and watch you or anything.

We keep some bags on the back of the door so we are ready, they then take the crates and say goodbye. They are supposed to tell you if anything is missing or if there is a subsituition as well.

Good luck and you have this. xx

Assuming Tesco its the same as Asda and Sainsburys, they come to the door with your food in big plastic crates, all piled up. You're expected to unload the contents of the crates. They'll usually take away each one as you empty it. Nice drivers will hold up or prop the lower crates on their trolley to save your back.

I use big plastic tubs with handles to unload my shopping in to so I can then easily carry it through to the kitchen to put away - but you could use your own bags, boxes, anything really.

No need to tip!

Onelifeonly · 26/02/2024 13:35

PS I never tip, never thought of it....

TraitorsGate · 26/02/2024 13:36

It comes in crates and you empty them, you can ask them to stand at the door while you bring the shopping in, you don't need to tip them. If its a frequent driver I give them a box of biscuits, chocolates every so often,

apintofwine · 26/02/2024 13:37

They’ll arrive at some point within the time slot. The driver usually brings all the crates to the door. You can then carry each crate in turn to your kitchen and unload the items onto your worktop. Take the crate back to the door and bring the next one in. Don’t put everything away til he’s gone (maybe except for freezer bits)!

Sometimes the driver will offer to bring the crates on and help unload everything. Usually only if they’re the friendlier type. So maybe have a think about what you’d prefer.

they should also point out to you if anything was unavailable or if anything was substituted. You can then reject the substitutes if you’re not happy with them.

Sometimes you sign the PDA but sometimes they do it for you.

Ta da, that’s it :D

Silvesterthecat · 26/02/2024 13:37

Don’t panic it’s easy! They have lovely drivers and they give a rough time update on the app once your at your hourly slot. The drivers always start unloading their crates when they knock on the door and I just carry them one at a time into my kitchen, dump the shopping in the fridge or cupboard or on worktop, return with the empty crate and carry on with the next one. They never mind waiting and are always happy and chatty! They’ll highlight any substitutions or unavailable items and if you don’t want you just hand it back and they sort a refund out same day. And then wave good bye!!

AtomicBlondeRose · 26/02/2024 13:37

My back door is close to the kitchen so I’d just bring the whole crate in and unpack it on to the kitchen table then hand the empty one back to the driver and take the next one. Easier than fumbling about at the door.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 26/02/2024 13:38

Ours puts the crates on the doorstep, we carry them through one by one to the kitchen and empty everything out onto the surfaces and take the empty crates back.

We don't usually tip, but we did give the lad who brought our Christmas delivery one because it was huge and he'd got stuck in the middle of a charity tractor run trying to get to us!

Tlittle · 26/02/2024 13:39

I empty the crate onto my sofa and give them the empty one and do the same with thr next one.x

DeliveryNewbie · 26/02/2024 13:40

Oh that doesn’t seem too bad. Okay. Thank you everyone. Much appreciated. 😁

Top tip: unload each crate onto the floor of your kitchen and/or kitchen counters rather than messing about putting things where they’re meant to go. This way you can give the empty crates back quickly and you can sort the items out after the driver has gone.

I’d get flustered if I didn’t do this so I thought I’d mention it. Hope you enjoy your food shop :)

HalfMyFault · 26/02/2024 13:41

You can take it from them at the door. Some people put it into their own bags on the doorstep and carry the bags into he kitchen to make it easier.

The drivers always offer to bring ours into the kitchen so we do that and then put everything away straight from the crates.

AhBiscuits · 26/02/2024 13:41

My driver stacks the crates on the step. I have a load of bags ready and decant the contents into the bags. No tip.
Earlier that day I get a receipt emailed to me with any substitutions so I can tell him at the start whether I am happy with them.

MixedCouple · 26/02/2024 13:42

Yes at the door. Some will ask of you need help bringing it in. I always refuse. Will be bagged.
No you don't tip. You can even ask them to unload and leave by the front door if your don't want to take it from their hands.

murmuration · 26/02/2024 13:45

They come with a crate or a stack of crates (depending on how much they can carry). Crates are usually sorted into cabinet, fridge, freezer, but sometimes 1-2 freezer items will be stuck into one of the others.

Driver will come to your door with crates. Sometimes they go back and forth until they’ve piled them all up before ringing the bell/knocking, sometimes they do it with the first crate, sometimes they come crateless (I think to check they’ve got the right place).

I usually ask them to put the crates just inside the door and carry the crates one by one into the kitchen to empty, then return the empties. When I had broken ribs I asked for the driver to carry it in and they were always happy to.

Some drivers are now asking for a signature on a little electronic thing - it doesn’t have to be good, you can just use your finger and make some kind of squiggle. I usually make a halfway recognisable first initial plus a squiggle for my surname.

Straightomyhead · 26/02/2024 13:49

I bring the crates into my kitchen and unload everything onto the side and then return the empty crates to the front door.

When I was pregnant the delivery person would bring the crates into the house for me.

After they have left, I then put my shopping away.

LoveBluey · 26/02/2024 13:53

They've always been really friendly and happy to help in the many years I've been having deliveries.

I carry the crates to the kitchen and empty on to the worktop/kitchen table but in the past I've taken big bags for life to the door and emptied the crates in to those.

I don't put anything away in cupboards until they've gone. It only takes a few minutes to get everything in and return the crates to them.

They email an order confirmation in the morning which includes any substitutions. If you don't want them just tell the driver and they'll take them back and refund.
A couple of times I've noticed things that are damaged/open so have told the driver and they've also refunded those (they normally tell me to keep them anyway)
Occasionally I'll notice something is damaged/short-dated after the driver leaves and I'll call Tesco and they refund the items- you can keep them.
This doesn't happen very often at all but worth knowing.

scorpiogirly · 26/02/2024 13:53

I had an asda delivery last night for the first time in weeks. I ended up chucking every item onto the floor and carrying it all through bit by bit. Definitely not the best way 😕

TheMushroomFamily · 26/02/2024 13:54

I just tip the crates out in the hallway there is no bags and no option to opt in for bags when I’ve used Tesco/sainsburys/asda. They all just come in crates and you are to unload them yourself so I pick up each crate and tip it onto the hallway floor behind the door, not the best way but I hate small talk and want them gone as soon as possible!

Redglitter · 26/02/2024 13:57

I get mine taken into the kitchen & unload them there with the help of the driver (they're all lovely here) It's all piled on the work surfaces ready for putting away

Borborygmus · 26/02/2024 13:58

Be aware that they can sometimes arrive a bit early, so I usually allow for half an hour before the start of your delivery slot time.

orangeleopard · 26/02/2024 13:59

I’m not autistic but I have social anxiety and just generally an anxious person so I understand your concerns with what to expect. I usually get Tesco delivered weekly. You often can track the exact time of delivery when it’s close to your slot, which I think it’s perfect. Then often it tells you when they’ve arrived, so you can be prepared to let them in. I live in a ground floor flat and I am disabled so they wheel their little cart thing with the shopping into my kitchen and help me unload it onto my sides. You usually have to ask them to do that if you request as I’ve had some that moan about wheeling it in then go and stand outside the door whilst I unpack.

Have your ID ready if you believe you need to do so as I always end up forgetting and have to scramble looking for my purse. I never tip, which may be bad of me - I’m unsure if I'm supposed to, plus with tipping weekly It would cost a fortune.

You’ll get an email with substitutions a few hours prior to your delivery, so check and be prepared what you want sent back or to keep.

last one (I promise), I’ve learned this the hard way but ensure your freezer items are there before the driver leaves. The past few weeks, I have had to call Tesco to request the driver to come back to deliver the freezer products they forgot!

Scarlettpixie · 26/02/2024 14:02

The driver might bring all the crates to the door and knock or just bring one or two and get the rest while you start to unload.

Tesco don’t use bags.

i always clear my kitchen surfaces before they arrive and then take a crate at a time and empty it out onto the surfaces. Once you have emptied the crates, you return them to the driver will be asked for a squiggle on an electronic pad.

Some drivers will ask if your subs are ok and tell you what they are but you get a receipt by email so I check that before they come. If there is anything you don’t want or anything short dated or looking limp you can send it back and they will refund. Some drivers will refund these and let you keep the items.

Don’t worry about rushing. If they deliver without bags it takes time to empty the crates and they exoect it.

skyeisthelimit · 26/02/2024 14:04

I bought a load of reusable shopping bags, rigid type ones so they stand up from Tesco, Ikea etc and keep them by the door. I line them all up ready and the Tesco guy puts the trays on the top doorstep.

Check your emails or mobile notification before they arrive as it will tell you of any substitutions, unavailable items, and also give an estimated time for their arrival
