Tesco delivery - what happens?

DeliveryNewbie · 26/02/2024 13:32

I am getting a food delivery from Tesco later this week but have never done it before. I’m autistic so want to know exactly how it will work if anyone can help?

Do you take it from them at the door? It doesn’t come in bags so what does it come in? What do you have to do? Are you supposed to tip the delivery person? Anything else important to know?

Thanks 😁

As a greeting, you could say something like: "Hi - This is the first time I've had a supermarket delivery, so I'm not sure how it all works". Then the person will know that you're not familiar with the routine. That may be helpful for them, too. I'm sure you'll find they're very friendly and easy to deal with.

I stack my washing baskets next to front door and tip the shopping straight into them

I just tip the crates out in the hallway there is no bags and no option to opt in for bags when I’ve used Tesco/sainsburys/asda. They all just come in crates and you are to unload them yourself so I pick up each crate and tip it onto the hallway floor behind the door, not the best way but I hate small talk and want them gone as soon as possible!

Exactly the same.

KateLizAn · 26/02/2024 14:11

I quickly take the crates one at a time into the kitchen and empty them - I usually have 4 crates worth each week and it only takes 2 mins max to do that.

I’m sure everyone does it a bit differently so have a think of which way would work for you. All the drivers I have had in 5+ years of having shopping delivered have been friendly so don’t worry about that side of it.

Comments passed the vibe check 🥰

This is a pro tip!

Quornflakegirl · 26/02/2024 14:47

Also be prepared for them to cancel your order (sometimes with notification, sometimes without!) at the drop of a hat. To add insult to injury they’ll also take your money with it taking up to 4 working days to return to your account. This happened to me about 6 times in the 3 years I shopped online with them.

It happened again in January and I swapped to Ocado. Ocado do not take your money until the driver drops off your delivery. Tesco will no longer be getting the 6.5k I spend on groceries each year.

TabbyM · 26/02/2024 14:53

I get mine at the door and carry it in but when I order for an elderly relative they will carry it upstairs and unpack on the kitchen table for her - just ask if you need help carrying.

I’m not autistic but I have social anxiety and just generally an anxious person so I understand your concerns with what to expect. I usually get Tesco delivered weekly. You often can track the exact time of delivery when it’s close to your slot, which I think it’s perfect. Then often it tells you when they’ve arrived, so you can be prepared to let them in. I live in a ground floor flat and I am disabled so they wheel their little cart thing with the shopping into my kitchen and help me unload it onto my sides. You usually have to ask them to do that if you request as I’ve had some that moan about wheeling it in then go and stand outside the door whilst I unpack.

Have your ID ready if you believe you need to do so as I always end up forgetting and have to scramble looking for my purse. I never tip, which may be bad of me - I’m unsure if I'm supposed to, plus with tipping weekly It would cost a fortune.

You’ll get an email with substitutions a few hours prior to your delivery, so check and be prepared what you want sent back or to keep.

last one (I promise), I’ve learned this the hard way but ensure your freezer items are there before the driver leaves. The past few weeks, I have had to call Tesco to request the driver to come back to deliver the freezer products they forgot!

ID? I've never been asked for any.

Blablabla146 · 26/02/2024 15:42

My top tip is remove anything breakable from the crate and then just tip out the contents on the kitchen floor. Saves so much time and back ache!

inappropriateraspberry · 26/02/2024 15:48

If I get a delivery, I'll take the crate from the driver at the door and empty in my kitchen, then return the empty one to the door. Swap with a full one and so on until they are emptied.
Don't tip the driver, I'm not even sure if they'd be allowed to accept a tip!

doris9034 · 26/02/2024 15:50

I work for Tesco - no need to tip - the drivers aren't allowed to accept anything :-)

xILikeJamx · 26/02/2024 15:50

I take the crates just inside the door and tip everything onto the floor quickly. Then they can get off and I'll take everything through once they're gone.

Would be annoying for them to wait for me emptying everything, and extremely cringey for me to be taking everything away to the kitchen while they're just standing there.

Dontbeme · 26/02/2024 15:56

Chiming in with my Tesco delivery experience.

Usually the delivery arrives in the last fifteen minutes of the two hour slot.
The driver will tell me if any items were not available or substituted and give me a printed receipt.
He always offers to carry the crates into the house or I can take them from him at the door.
Food items are usually grouped, so all freezer items in one crate, fridge stuff together, cupboard stuff together.
Always found the drivers helpful and friendly.

Libertysparkle · 26/02/2024 16:08

I get Tesco delivery. If it helps you can add notes to your delivery. Ie we had please ring the bell.

But this could say anything like you need help with getting the food into kitchen.

The delivery guys are really helpful.

SusieSussex · 26/02/2024 16:10

I unload it into ikea bags from the crates in my porch. I once asked how other people unload it and he said some people tip the crate onto their sofa and he worries about eggs etc.

dutysuite · 26/02/2024 16:11

I always tip a couple of pounds, it’s not expected but if they are doing back breaking work carrying crates up flights of stairs then it’s the least I can do. I also try to get the food in as quickly as possible so they can get off to their next drop, apparently they don’t get much time between drops.

Rectanglelights · 26/02/2024 16:39

The best Tesco delivery I had was one Christmas and it was delivered by an eastern european bloke who was a weightlifter in his spare time. He brought the crates in two at a time, one on each shoulder. I was AMAZED. If anyone is married to this man, Tesco delivery driver in Burnley... I am very jealous. 🤣

sesquipedalian · 26/02/2024 16:44

My delivery person just parks the crates on the porch by the front door: I have a couple of laundry baskets to hand so I can just decant everything into to them and carry them through to the kitchen.

Sprogonthetyne · 26/02/2024 16:57

It arrives in large plastic creates/boxes, which the delivery person brings to the door, but not into the house. They will want the creates back, so you need to empty the food out of them relatively quickly. I usually put a stack of shopping bags next to the door when I'm expecting a delivery, then quickly bag it up to bring in and sort.

kittykarate · 26/02/2024 16:58

Several hours before delivery you will get an email and an update in the app (if you used that) to say that your order has been picked, and what substitutions and short dated items are in there. If you don't like the substitution (most of the time they're fine, but sometimes you do wonder what has gone through their mind) or the short date doesn't work for you, you flag the item up to the driver when it is delivered and they will take the offending item away and arrange the refund.

You have a delivery slot - the delivery is made in this time range usually. If they are running ahead they will call my mobile to check if I'm in. If you have used the Tesco App, mine shows an approximate location / how many drops are before you.

Depending on the access to your property, they will either carry a few crates to your door and then knock, or put them all on a trolley and bring them to the door. I do not bring the delivery person into the house, I do all the unload on the doorstep. I have some storage boxes that I use to unload the shopping into, I unload item by item into these boxes, as this allows me to check for leaky items etc. They will usually check if you're ok with any substitutions. They may ask you to 'sign' on a small terminal - use your finger, they don't really care that it looks like your signature.

You do not tip the driver. The driver doesn't expect any detailed conversation, offers of cups of tea etc.

Boomer55 · 26/02/2024 17:06

I just use the bags for life at the door. Never had a problem with any of them. If you want bagged shopping, then use Ocado.🙂

purplecorkheart · 26/02/2024 17:12

I tend to watch out for them so have the door open by the time they pull in. I always have a load of bags for life open inside the door. They bring the first crate to the down and I unpack it into a bag while they get the second one and so on. I find that the crates are normally not over filled so it is easy to empty one crate while they get the next crate. In my experience the drivers are really really lovely, offering to hold a crate so I don't have to bend down to unpack etc

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 26/02/2024 17:15

Borborygmus · 26/02/2024 15:25

ID? I've never been asked for any.

I was ID'd for the first time a few weeks ago - we've been getting weekly deliveries for years. No alcohol or anything age-restricted in the shop.

The driver said it was a new policy though it's never happened again since.

JMSA · 26/02/2024 17:27

The man (or woman) comes to your door with the crates. I take the crates to my kitchen, where I unpack the shopping.
The Tesco man does not wait for me to do this. He simply takes away the crates from last time, which I store in my outdoor cellar.

So every week, we do a crate swap. Much better, as they're not waiting around awkwardly for you to empty them!

There used to be the option of bags, but no longer.

I love my Tesco shopping deliveriesSmile
