To tell my cleaner to stop wearing perfume?

We have a cleaner that comes once a week for four hours. We’ve used the same cleaning company for a while but recently they’ve chopped and changed the staff, so after a period of different people each week it seems we’ve now settled on someone regularly.
She cleans okay but wears really strong perfume. So strong that after she goes I need to leave all the windows in the house open for a good hour or so to get rid of her smell.

AIBU to ask her or her boss to ask her to stop wearing the perfume before coming to our house?

Only tonight?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 25/02/2024 22:04

I get migraines from some strong perfumes.

I'll just get another cleaner. Sorry, but it's not worth me risking a headache and paying for it.

mustardplant · 25/02/2024 22:05

I feel the same, my cleaner also smokes so there's often a lingering smell of perfume/stale smoke. I wouldn't ever say anything though as she does a great job so the pros outweigh the cons!

BobbyBiscuits · 25/02/2024 22:10

It could come off as a bit rude unless phrased appropriately. I think it would be more polite to say something to her, rather than the boss. In a really non confrontational way of course. You could tell a white lie and say you have a fragrance allergy? Though I guess if you wear perfume and she uses scented cleaning products it probably won't wash (pun not intended).
Is it really that strong that it lingers long after she leaves? I'm just thinking that she could be fairly offended. I guess you would be fine if they just sent someone else? I'd say it would have to be pretty damned hideous smelling to warrent saying anything really. Unless you don't mind her leaving.

EasterEggsComeAtMe · 25/02/2024 22:12

No you can't tell another adult not to wear perfume 🙄

Very entertaining.
@helpfulperson that was magnificent by the way.

I'm still laughing at horse and arses upthread.

I don’t think you can tell her anything.

And the prize for today's most mature post goes to @EricaJohns apparently. ConfusedGrin

I wouldn’t like this either. MIL used to wear strong perfume and then hold our babies. They would stink of it after she left.

Twiglets1 · 25/02/2024 22:17

What have I just read? Your cleaner can wear whatever perfume she likes! No you don’t have the right to dictate what perfume she wears.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 25/02/2024 22:17

I would just air it out afterwards unless it triggers allergies. In that case I would politely explain and the company can either get a scent free cleaner or she can stop wearing fragrance.

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 25/02/2024 22:19

OP has a point but its not as bad as workmen/technicians etc coming into our home and STINK of BO and or cigarette smell - it seriously gets up my nose

The bO, why can't people change their clothes daily and wear some deodorant

TBH, I rather have the strong perfume that the above

43ontherocksporfavor · 25/02/2024 22:20

You can always get a different cleaner.

Hello

It is the OP's home, ok
OP has a right to let in who she wants.

Would you let someone into your place if they smelt of dog poo as possibly they stepped into it?

OP could actually tell the employer, and IMO that is the better way

Dogdo · 25/02/2024 22:23

I would ask the company for a different cleaner personally. You can't dictate whether she wears perfume or not.

I can't stand perfume, it gives me a headache, and some people wear so much of the stuff. I work with a woman and you can always tell where she's been as her perfume lingers for absolutely ages. It's bizarre! I work in a big building but her perfume will fill a corridor. I dread getting in the lift with her as it's so strong it's suffocating!

It’s the OP’s home and if her cleaner is too smelly for her liking then the easy solution would be not to have one and do the cleaning herself. Not difficult. The cleaner is there doing her job, not forcing her way in against OP’s will.

SweetClintonMoments · 25/02/2024 22:29

Maybe her perfume makes the job bearable, wiping other people's shit and stink all day, smelling nice to her might be her joy. If she was an excellent cleaner i would put up but if she were average i would find someone else and before they start stipulate that you have a perfume sensitivity so no heavily scented cleaning products or perfume please..say this before you even meet her so it doesn't feel personal.

SweetClintonMoments · 25/02/2024 22:30

There just isn't a way you could say it without offending her. And i wouldn't want to offend someone with all that intimate access and knowledge of my home so if she is a good cleaner i would suck it up but if she is so so, get a new one.

You smell of arse and horses will be my new insult.
Especially if they don’t have horses as they will be upset and confused.
