Holiday to jersey uk

Hi. Shamelessly posting for traffic.
Has anyone been to Jersey Island in the UK?

I saw it last night on the apprentice and am intrigued. I'm hoping it would be cheaper than going abroad.

Would you recommend it for a family of six?

Also, what would be the best way to travel there from the midlands please?

Thankyou in advance!

My husband and I spent 5 days there last year for the first time. It was delightful. The beaches are lovey and are huge. Plenty of space to play football or cricket. There are plenty of playgrounds and parks for children to enjoy. It felt very safe and gentile. We flew and then used the buses to get around which we found easy. I would just say, we didn’t find Jersey very cheap though.

Yes, a few years ago now but we loved it. We live on the European mainland, came home for a wedding, took the first ferry over from Dorset after a night at a Premier Inn. We stayed at the Merton as it was a family themed resort hotel for young children, and walkable into St Helier but there are plenty of choices depending on your needs and ages of kids.

The car was a plus for us, as it was so easy to tour round the island. St. Helier has a nice choice of shops, restaurants and a market. The German underground Hospital is an interesting historical visit.

I still remember the gorgeous seafood at the Crabshack and it's sister restaurant The Oyster Box next to it, right on the beach in Brelade.

Gorgeous place but you are not guaranteed good weather obviously. It is usually a bit milder than mainland UK but you could get grey, rainy days like the rest of the UK. Definitely not a cheap option though.

edwinbear · 23/02/2024 14:44

It’s an amazing place. I lived there for 2 years on secondment from the UK with work. In an ideal world DH and I would retire there, but the housing regulations for non locals means it’s not really feasible.

It’s a great destination for families, the beaches are beautiful, hotels and restaurants superb and the people are lovely, it’s also much warmer than the UK. It’s definitely not a cheap option though! You need a car to get around really, but I’d fly from the Midlands and pick up a rental car at the airport.

toomuchfaff · 23/02/2024 14:49

Jersey is amazing, but its far from cheap. I have family there. Its beautiful, its gorgeous, the sun shines, the place is fabulous. Its not cheap. You can fly there.

pumpkinpiee · 23/02/2024 14:54

It’s lovely but not cheap at all! Accommodation is especially expensive along with eating out. Some gorgeous beaches but not a huge amount to do if the weather is bad

JosieRay · 23/02/2024 15:03

We spent a week there 2 years ago. If you’re interested in WW2 museums etc there’s a lot to see as it was occupied. Lovely scenery, we intended cycling everywhere but the roads are so narrow that we got a weeks bus pass which was ideal. The bus station in St Helier is a hub for all the destinations. I’d say there is probably just enough to do for a week, if you spend time on the beach, which we didn’t, then it’s lovely, beautiful beaches. It’s a mix of French and British in terms of shops and language, not cheap at all though, especially if you’re used to Aldi prices as we were!
Fly to St Helier then a bus to wherever you’re staying. Its a tiny island and it feels safe.

I've been for work a few times. It's a lovely place, but it really isn't cheap.

JacquesHarlow · 23/02/2024 15:28

I'm hoping it would be cheaper than going abroad.

Hope is free at least, @Freespirit44

TeenDivided · 23/02/2024 15:32

We go annually. It isn't cheaper than say Spain, but is nicer.

Weather is generally good, you can fly with Blue Islands from various UK airports or drive to Portsmouth/Poole and take a ferry.

Lovely beaches, nice dining, quite a bit of History. Fab zoo founded by Gerald Durrell. You can also do a day trip to St Malo in France which is a walled town.

TeenDivided · 23/02/2024 15:35

In bad weather:
. ten pin bowling
. war tunnels
. watching the crashing waves at St Ouens
. swimming pool complex in St helier
. St Helier town & market & various museums

In 25+ years we have only had one holiday with more than a day or 2 of bad weather.

Freespirit44 · 23/02/2024 15:35

@JacquesHarlow that made me laugh 😂
I get the message. It's NOT cheap.
God knows why I thought it was. Maybe because it's closer than going out of the UK iyswim.
Anyway, I'm well and truly sold. I'm going to look at going in the summer holidays so that there's a higher chance of good weather.

Sounds like it's a popular destination so I will get onto booking quite quickly. May look at Airbnb rather than hotels incase I can save a few bob.

Thankyou everyone 👌

You will be going out of the UK, @Freespirit44 , because Jersey isn't in it Smile

wizzler · 23/02/2024 15:42

I've been a few times and flown with Jet2 from East Midlands airport
Love it there

Blueuggboots · 23/02/2024 15:43

It's a lovely place!! Very picturesque. The war tunnels are fascinating.

TeenDivided · 23/02/2024 15:52

We do self catering and tend to book the previous September for the next summer!

Tadaaaah · 23/02/2024 15:53

You can only really enjoy Jersey by getting out and about to enjoy the lovely beaches, food, views etc so either factor car hire into your holiday budget or look into the tourist bus service which trundles around the island stopping everywhere. If you happen to be a nervous driver I'd recommend the bus as many of the lanes are very narrow and twisty.

rookiemere · 23/02/2024 15:58

We went there last summer and were very unlucky as it was not warm at all. We also got the ferry over to St Malo which is a great place to visit, we actually ended up spending a couple of nights there ( return ferry was cancelled due to awful weather so we spent an extra night and got the bus to Dinan.

Jersey is great if the weather is good loads of lovely beaches and so much quieter than Cornwall, we used the bus service to get around.St Malo and Dinan were a lot cheaper for eating out and hotels so worth including in your trip.

Time40 · 23/02/2024 16:05

Jersey is gorgeous! The sea is a lot warmer than it is around Britain, which is good for swimming. The airport is the nicest I've ever been to - tiny, and very easy. The best way of getting around is by car, but the comment above is true: lots of the roads are twisty and single-track, so some tricky reversing can be needed. Oh dear - now you've made me want to go again, OP!

Freespirit44 · 23/02/2024 16:05

@SocksAndTheCity I have just learnt something new 😀

OP, Jersey was owned by the Normans. When King John (I think) lost his land in Normandy, the CIs had to decide whether to stick with Normandy or stay loyal to the King, and they stayed with the King.

The Jersey Seafaris are fab.

This. The weather was shit on the two occasions I’ve been there.

CookStrait · 23/02/2024 16:45

I’ve been looking into it, but I get the impression that the hotels are tatty old things which they charge a fortune for. Plus flights at the time were £300 each which I was not prepared to pay, especially when they were half that the week before. It’s can be quite windy so perhaps a difficult landing. Food not the best, & of course expensive. I reached the conclusion that I’d be better off booking a PI, which is cheap, & having breakfast & dinner there. It’s quite easy & cheap to hop on a bus from airport to hotel. It’s still on my list though.

I did price up the ferry as I feel it would be more of an adventure, but it would take longer & cost about the same as flights.

if there’s kids under 16 in your party of 6 they get free breakfast at PI.

Goatymum · 23/02/2024 17:07

Haven’t been since I was a teen but had a great holiday with my parents for two weeks! Loads to do, great beaches, I still remember the German tunnels/museum.
We actually went twice, once by ferry and the next time we flew.
We also visited Sark one day - no cars allowed in the island! All I remember was that it was quite a choppy crossing and my mum was sick 😆
