Me and my dc are away on holiday in a cottage. We’re on a pretty tight budget. It’s bucketing down and the dc are all bored and fighting.
can anyone recommend anything that’s free to do indoors in north wales before I lose my mind?!

Board games? Cards?
Talent show?
How many mud pies can we make?
Walk? Yes you will get wet, but hot baths and hot chocolate when home

MinnieMountain · 21/02/2024 12:26

@funf seems to know lots about North Wales.

SerenChocolateMuncher · 21/02/2024 12:43

It's the "free" bit that will limit your options, but there are some very satisfactory low cost options.

The scenery in North Wales is stunning, so if you have a car, a drive on some of the more remote mountain roads can be very enjoyable, especially around the Bala/Lake Vyrnwy area.

There is Oriel Mon which is a lovely free entry art gallery in Llangefni on Anglesey, with a café and shop.

Caernarfon Castle isn't free, but it's reasonably priced and you can easily spend the best part of a day there.

The train ride from Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Ffestiniog and back is very reasonable for a return family ticket (and much cheaper than the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog railways). The whole journey from Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog takes about 2 hours if you don't get off the train. The train passes through the Conwy valley with stunning views of the big mountain ranges and various places (Betws-y-Coed, or Llanrwst, for example) where you can stop off on the way and extend your day.

Portmeirion village? Not free, except for under 5s, but £10 for adults and £5 for children 5-15, for a whole day.

Funf · 21/02/2024 15:09

Which part of North Wales?
This is a good source of info but its currently moving web host so not always viewable
http://www.donthibernate.co.uk/
When its wet we usually head the the llyn Peninsular as the weather is usually much better there. Its a geography thing I believe, as you drive out of the rain in Snowdonia that area catches the rain leaving it better on the Llyn.
So on the way
The Ugly House a Cafe now but you can tell the kids the story
https://www.visitconwy.org.uk/things-to-do/ty-hyll-the-ugly-house-p284731
Another Cafe but for £1 you can visit the Waterfall walk SSI behind it, steep slippy paths but spectacular views especially when its wet. This is the top end of Fairy glen

The bottom of Fairy Glen and a slightly better path is here

Really need your location
Beach combing then a good cafe after for a warm drink

Hobnobswantshernameback · 21/02/2024 15:15

North wales could mean anywhere from the furthest tip of the Llyn peninsula to the top of ynys mon to Conwy or down to Machynlleth
it would be like me saying I'm Scotland what can I do 🙄

Thelightis · 21/02/2024 15:16

What a weird time to go is it half term where you are or something

serin · 21/02/2024 15:16

The suns out now in Llandudno 😁 get yourself over there!

Compash · 21/02/2024 15:19

Get a simple kid's Welsh dictionary and learn some words! To start you off: bwrw glaw - to rain! 😉

Portmeirion is pretty much all outdoors, so not so good in the rain.

I was near Wrexham recently, for an extended family event. I didn't have an awful lot of time, but I did have the morning before the wedding. Becasue there was a big football game on, I didn't stay in Wrexham. I did stay in Llangollen and went to this aqueduct place. It was quite interesting, and you can do a little canal boat trip. The village itself was also really pretty to walk around, if you've got waterproofs. The drive over the ridge on the Horseshoe Pass was very scenic, and there's a Milk Bar place you can stop, with good views, for a drink/snack.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & Trevor Basin Visitor Centre, North Wales

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is one of the most awesome engineering feats on our canal network.

Again depending on location most Liverpool museums are free, but please check
https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/world-museum

Museum workers are on strike currently in Liverpool...museums only open certain days

Mynaddmawr · 21/02/2024 15:44

Nearby castle

The path is slippy and steep but fantastic views

The Ponderosa! Could not remember the name of the place.....

Cameraclick · 21/02/2024 17:23

I’m in north east and we’ve had lots of sunshine and blue skies today so I’m guessing op is north west

Cabinfeversetsin · 21/02/2024 17:24

Hi. Yes it’s half term for us this week. We ended up going to one of our favourite places, Lake Vyrnwy(thanks to whoever suggested that and reminded me), for a walk. With the heavy rain, the dam was impressive and there were lots of waterfalls for us to look at. Had a look in the RSPB hut at the birds, too. The DC are all very muddy but we had a lovely time. It’s pay day tomorrow, so we’ll have a ‘proper’ day out somewhere before the end of our trip

Just glad you have been able to make the most of it during the bad weather, the waterfalls are always a great opting when raining. Aber is my favourite as the path is so easy even accessible by mobility scooter, its just like a Norwegian valley.
https://snowdonia.gov.wales/walk/aber-falls/

Dyserth for a walk through the woods, they have a cave and stepping stones as well as a waterfall. Its a great stop off as its just off the A55

If you are a Hinterland fan (Y Gwyll in welsh) is a great crime thriller

Many of the locations are near Devils bridge Aberystwyth and Borth. all worth a visit and each different.
Mechynlleth is a nice small town that comes alive on Market day
