Panicking because I ordered one bra, and the company added additional crap at the checkout without me realising, and it's now totalled over $300

Flufferblub · 21/02/2024 03:46

Not really an AIBU but I could be about to learn a very expensive lesson. Ordered one bra, and when I got to the checkout it said Would you like to add this item and that item? I was clicking complete order trying to skip past them, but unknowingly was adding stuff to my order I didn't even want. Stuff's not even my size or anything. I emailed them within minutes to cancel my order and get a refund, and they offer me a 25% discount. I said Please cancel my order and refund my money. They offered me a 50% discount. I said Please cancel my order and refund my money. The swiftness of the replies and the sudden massive discounts are obviously ringing alarm bells that this has been a scam all along. Do I have any chance of getting my money back? I paid through PayPal. Or am I doomed to pay over $300 for a load of A cup bras and underwear I don't even want.

Maybe this post might be a warning to others. I hate this feeling so much

My Facebook seems to be about 50% adverts these days. I have ordered some stuff and it actually be decent but then I come off FB and look for the company.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 21/02/2024 08:24

It's worth reporting this to your local trading standards (although if it's an overseas company there's only so much they can do). Pre-ticking boxes is a bad sales practice and against the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations (and GDPR for data protection things).

I buy running clothes from a company that does it - eg you put a pair of leggings in your basket and they add the matching shorts or similar, so you have to untick it. I like the leggings but keep meaning to email the company and tell them to stop the pre-ticking! It's not the same as Amazon's practice of saying "people bought this item with x and y" which doesn't pretick anything.

I also agree - before you put your credit card details in, or go to the paypal site, check and double check and triple check your basket. If only to make sure you selected the correct size!

FUPAgirl · 21/02/2024 08:31

Ahh op what a nightmare!! At least you've taken the time to catch it on, sort it and warn others. Try and not panic, these things happen - the scammers are to blame, not you.

Itslegitimatesalvage · 21/02/2024 08:39

How did it even happen? Even if you clicked through them all without paying attention, you eventually get to a final page with your total and then you’d be taken to PayPal to complete the transaction where, again, you see the total on the PayPal page and have to click to pay it. I don’t understand how you didn’t see the total?

This doesn’t sound like you’ve been scammed. A scam would be saying it’s £10 but charging your card more or signing you up to repeated payments without permission. You just didn’t look at the total. That’s not a scam.

Thank you, that's great advice. It was from a Facebook ad 🤦

I just called the bank and cancelled my card. Feel like such an idiot.

Don't feel like an idiot.

It’s easily done as the wording around it is often confusing. It doesn’t say “DO YOU WANT TO ADD THIS?”

It’s “Untick if you think you don’t want or maybe do want this extra thing that isn’t your size but you might want it anyway or find someone you know that it fits. Yes? No?” 🤷🏼‍♀️

pepperaunt · 21/02/2024 08:49

I’ve taken to leaving Facebook and looking up the company on Trustpilot. Inevitably it’s mostly 1 and 2 star reviews

IlkaDoxie · 21/02/2024 08:54

Thanks for the link, was just about to ask, although those pics on Amazon do make it look like it’s a struggle to fasten! 👀

Flamme · 21/02/2024 09:51

Flufferblub · 21/02/2024 04:35

It has a floral back and no underwires. But yes, probably. I've reported it on Facebook. Thank you for your advice everyone. I buy a lot of shit on Facebook 🤦 Some stuff has been good. Really pleased with the make up brush and sponge cleaning stuff, although I think I ended up buying that on Amazon. Had some clothes in the past. Coco and Eve hair stuff, won't bother with that again. It wasn't that amazing.

I better just assume everything on there is a scam from now on and just click hide the ads. Would just delete Facebook altogether, but have thousands of old photos on there (set to private). I waste so much time on there really.

Most of the stuff in Facebook ads is available much cheaper elsewhere. It's always worth checking.

VQ1970 · 21/02/2024 10:42

This has reminded me of the dream I had last night where I did something similar and ended up buying £40k worth of lion shit. If anyone can interpret that, I'd be very interested 😂

I think it still counts as a scam, if a company adds items to your basket without you specifically requesting it, they are preying on people who are not paying attention, we all know how to get through the PayPal buying process quickly, so mindlessly you just click continue, confirm, etc. a lot of people will spot what’s happened and probably choose to not buy anything, but it’s the smaller percentage of people not realising it’s happened that they are scamming

Jovacknockowitch · 21/02/2024 11:35

Facebook don't appear to give a flying fuck about what is advertised on there - I have reported very obvious scams and they came back to say it didn't breach guidelines, despite being a link to false newspaper website with fake stories and photos claiming celebrity endorsements.

NoOrdinaryMorning · 21/02/2024 11:35

You need to call your bank and ask to speak to the disputes team

fatphalange · 21/02/2024 11:52

My DD always wants to order from social media 'shops'. If it's not a legit company then it's a firm 'no'. Assume they're all scams or cheap shitty tatty knock offs.

As for the extra bits at check out, even mcDs does this- want extra fries? You just skip over it, they aren't offering them for free!

Return the goods for a refund or if you've fallen for a scam, raise a case with PayPal.

If you paid via PayPal then you need to cancel, or at least open a payment dispute in your PayPal account (find and open the transaction, and then there should be a button to open a dispute).

I don't mean to sound harsh, but you should not have cancelled your card with the bank. PayPal and your bank are two completely separate entities that run independently of each other. Even if you lose the dispute/case with PayPal, you will still owe PayPal the money whether or not you've cancelled your bank card.

Also, double check your 'Subscriptions' in your PayPal account, as there seems to be others complaining online that this type of website sets up a recurring payment every month after buying something from them. If there is one, you'll be able to see it and cancel it in your PayPal account.

I now take the view that all products advertised on Facebook or instagram are either scams of else just shit products like hiSmile teeth whitening products of il makiage foundation or that hair living complex stuff with sally Hughes’s endorsements all over it. All just overpriced shit that does nothing.

IL makiage foundation is good. The concealer is the best I've ever bought tbh.

It's massively overpriced shite. The normal formulation splits and manages to be both oily and watery at the same time. The heavier formulation looks like face paint and oxidises.

Well it works for me. And it doesn't look like facepaint.

tryingcouchto5K · 21/02/2024 12:47

Sorry if this advice has been offered in the thread but would a charge back work here? My son was scammed with a clothing item - a poorly made item arrived that wasn't as advertised or even fit for wear. After toing and froing with Emails we realised it was a scam. The bank refunded via a 'charge back'. We had to send the bank the Email trail to prove we had tried to get a refund.

peachgreen · 21/02/2024 13:28

I hate Il Makiage too. Cakey and somehow both drying AND a horribly oily consistency? The concealer was alright though, but not worth how much it costs.

The Merit Minimalist stick is brilliant for me, though.

2Hot2Handle · 21/02/2024 17:04

You’re doing all the right things. There is a scam thread on Reddit about Floral Secrets, where other users have claimed fraudulent transactions have been made during and after their purchase. Lots of legitimate companies advertise on Facebook, but I would Google any companies you are unfamiliar with, before making any future transactions.

Flufferblub · 21/02/2024 18:44

Thanks everyone. Lots of lessons to be learnt here.

So, I had the bra in my basket, I clicked pay with PayPal, it went to PayPal, and clicked confirm or whatever. It then redirected me to the site and was asking Do you want to add this, that and the other? A few times. When it redirected me back to the site, the button at the bottom said Complete order. I clicked that. What I should have clicked was a much smaller link that said No thanks. It never came up with a total after that, or anything that said Are you sure? Or anything. It just came up Thanks for your $300.

The swiftness in the replies on my email suggested to me that this is a well rehearsed script. The replies were coming within minutes saying Oh you must have accidentally ordered these extra items. How about we give you a 25% discount on them? When I said No, I want my money back. Cancel the order, the next reply pinged back almost immediately. We can give you a 50% discount. I'll use my own staff discount code to make that happen right now. I again said No, I want to cancel my order and get my money back. Then they said they'd refund it. It looks as though they have. But it takes 3-5 working days 🙄 Took 3-5 seconds to whizz the money out of my account.

Any way, in future I will be more careful. But I do feel that I was misled and this is a well rehearsed thing they have going here.

Thanks for everyone's help. I went to the bank in person today, and called the fraud line.
