Would this put you off a man?

A man in his 30s who uses a lot of local slang, like 'alright lad', 'proper sound that lad ', stuff like that. Not sure if I'm too judgemental?

It’s wouldn’t be for me!

Superawkward · 20/02/2024 22:13

Is he from the North West of England/North East Wales? I know loads of people who talk like that!

PeloMom · 20/02/2024 22:13

It’d put me off

Jacketpotatoman · 20/02/2024 22:13

From Merseyside 😂

Liverpudlian?

MiddleagedBeachbum · 20/02/2024 22:14

Not for me, I wouldn’t mind if it was work banter with the lads only sort of thing, but wouldn’t stand for talk like that to me or generally

Jacketpotatoman · 20/02/2024 22:14

Moier · 20/02/2024 22:13

Liverpudlian?

Yup 😂 everything is sound, boss, is right, so on.

They wouldn't bother me.

Jacketpotatoman · 20/02/2024 22:14

Im guilty of using some language like that but it's when it's their whole way of speaking.

OP posts:
Jacketpotatoman · 20/02/2024 22:16

I just wonder if they should've grown out of it by 30s.

I actually avoided anyone from certain regions with these kind of accents and use of slang.
Even Londoners. Really annoyed me so much how they speak. As someone with a very strong West country accent I made an effort over the years to tone
It down and speak properly snd more "neutral".

My only exceptions when it comea to accents is Irish and Scottish 😍

Pinkfrlls · 20/02/2024 22:16

It would put me right off. Can he actually talk properly when he makes the effort? Is he well educated?

Jacketpotatoman · 20/02/2024 22:17

Everything is 'I done " 'I seen' 'I spoken ' though at the same time that's how a lot of people do speak here so maybe I'm judging him too much.

Think it depends where you're from too, and what you've grown up around etc. As soon as I read your post I knew it was a scouser. My DH is pretty scouse and wouldn't say these things. I know loads of scousers who would, but usually they are younger when still talking like that. It wouldn't be for me in a partner.

TurnTheKey · 20/02/2024 22:18

No, it wouldn't put me off.

Jacketpotatoman · 20/02/2024 22:18

This bloke is a walking Scouse dictionary, I think it's something I'd associate more with teens or very young men.

OP posts:
5128gap · 20/02/2024 22:18

No, I'd be fine with it as I love the accent. I'm far more put off by 'nicely spoken' men as they always sound wet lettucey to me.

PaperDoIIs · 20/02/2024 22:19

Dialect or accent wouldn't be an issue. Sounding like a 17 yo out with his mates, would. Only you can tell which is which.

Rialoulou · 20/02/2024 22:19

I done, I seen, I spoken...can you give sentence examples?

A lot of people may speak like that, but that doesn’t mean I have to go out with them.

Jacketpotatoman · 20/02/2024 22:19

Yeah I like the accent too, it's just very laddish the way he speaks sometimes.

To be fair this is how a lot of people speak like here, it's just like "I seen him yesterday ' rather than I 'I saw him".

YABU & this thread is as unbearable as I expected it would be. RP is a modern thing, it's only 'proper' cos ppl think they are better than everyone else who doesn't use it, there's nothing natural about it at all.

Talking with a regional accent & all the lovely intricacies that comes with it, the idiolect, the slang, is a far more normal & natural use of language. Cannot get my head around the idea of actively avoiding someone because of it.

Fiddlerdragon · 20/02/2024 22:21

Jacketpotatoman · 20/02/2024 22:16

I just wonder if they should've grown out of it by 30s.

It’s literally how they talk. My partner speaks like that and he’s in his 40’s. He’ll speak like it until the day he dies. You don’t grow out of dialect. I was at the leisure centre earlier (Liverpool) and smiled to myself at what the mn responses would’ve been when the receptionist asked the family in front of us how old their baby was, the answer was 5. I had murder on here when I called my 1yo a baby! People need to get a grip and realise not everyone’s the same as them. If it puts you off then don’t date him

Superawkward · 20/02/2024 22:22

Ha ha ha! I knew he was a scouser!

If he starts saying 'Er right, what it is right, is right....' then run as fast as you can!
