To read the Waitrose magazine for comedy relief?

AIBU to get the Waitrose magazine just to have a good laugh at some of the pretentious recipes? DH and I sit down and go through the recipes/articles for 10 minutes while we have a cuppa and end up in mad chuckles every time! It never disappoints. I mentioned it to a colleague at lunch and whilst I was sharing it she looked at me very sternly and said -"you shouldn't get the magazine just to laugh at it, some people really appreciate those recipes. I love their recipes". I felt a bit bad and apologised if I offended her. I asked if she had ever made one of the recipes and she admitted she had never (ironically, I have made a couple of the easier ones). Am I the only one that finds some of the recipes pretentious and therefore, hilarious? I seriously hope not! Maybe I have a weird sense of humour?!

I will caveat this by saying that Waitrose is the only shop walking distance from my home, so I treat it as my corner shop. So I do shop there but only for a few top up items/special offers.

I agree with a pp that for genuine entertainment you need Ottolenghi's recipes in the Saturday Guardian. I do have half a dozen types of oil and another six types of vinegar in my kitchen cupboard but I still end up having to do special trips out to Big Waitrose for kefir lime leaves or Berbere spice mix if I fancy doing one of his recipes.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 20/02/2024 18:35

I've never looked at the free magazine but I googled "Waitrose recipes" and my first hits were:

Turmeric latte cookies
"Tiramichoux" 😂
Chocolate Cremeaux cornflake tart

They did make me smile. They are a bit pretentious to be fair and I can totally see the humour in it. Must be my working class background too.

Maybe I should also stick to "take a break" as someone who obviously aspires to be the next Mrs Bucket suggested above 😂😂😂

My dad grew up in a council house in Peckham if you want to play working class background top trumps. I just can't get on board with "cuppa" (or inverted snobbery).

Read the room OP ffs 😂😂😂

(but I agree with you)

Well I’ve read the whole thread and this nailed it early doors

aitchteeaitch · 20/02/2024 19:09

300g Waitrose fresh Sicilian linguine
5ml Waitrose finest truffle oil
6 Waitrose finest prepared lobster tails
1 bunch samphire
1 Icelandic lava-smoked shallot
1 tablespoon Chateau de Chasselas chablis 1997
1 jar Waitrose budget pasta sauce

Is that the sort of thing you mean, OP?

TheKeatingFive · 20/02/2024 19:11

There is a distinct lack of comedy on this thread. Disappointing

I bloody love Take A Break, I always get it when I’m ill. My favourite bit is always the really shite “hacks” people send in like making coasters from cereal boxes

There was a group called Take A Shite (I think) on Facebook. Not sure if it posts much anymore but had some proper classic Bad Tips.

Bloomingdaffs · 20/02/2024 19:15

I'm loving how the Mrs Buckets are so affronted by this thread. Now that is funny.

CombatLingerie · 20/02/2024 19:17

Ah I fancy making a pineapple upside down cake now, glacé cherries in the pineapple ring holes. First thing I ever cooked for my DH when I met him. Have your fun wherever you can find it OP.

BaroqueInterlude · 20/02/2024 19:02

@riotlady If you haven't already read this Classics thread, you will love it!

Perfect, thank you! 😂

MargotMoon · 20/02/2024 19:17

Ooh there's some proper cat-bum-mouth responses on here 😂

Well done OP - Chef's kiss!👌🤣

Dogdo · 20/02/2024 19:19

Thank you for the take-a-break thread. Made my night!

CombatLingerie · 20/02/2024 19:20

Are the Take a Break ‘hacks’ the same as Viz Top Tips ?

FluffActually · 20/02/2024 19:22

I mostly shop at Aldi/Lidl but just looked through the link and I don't know what you're on about? Don't fancy a lot of the recipes but def could make any of them from stuff we already have/can easily pop out and buy.
I see they're calling blood oranges 'blush' now though or is that another weird class thing?

This reminds me of when I did a fortnight’s work experience at Waitrose magazine after uni in the William Sitwell era. I contributed to brainstorming the recipes that Pippa Middleton ‘wrote’ and remember testing a recipe in the kitchen and totally messing it up…the shame! Anyway, I never thought the recipes were pretentious and thought they were all a lovely bunch of people (apart from Sitwell)

PrincessOfPreschool · 20/02/2024 19:28

Just clicked on the magazine. It is a bit funny.

"Creamy miso and wasabi....leeks" 😂. Quite an amusing juxtaposition.

PinkTonic · 20/02/2024 19:32

The spiced pineapple crumble sounds delish. Thanks for the link

ErrolTheDragon · 20/02/2024 19:33

Didn't we all make pineapple upside down cake back in the 60s/70s?

Well, all the girls did. The boys got to do technical drawing.Envy

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 20/02/2024 19:38

I really hope OP won’t ever come across an Ottolenghi cookbook.

😀

VeronicaBeccabunga · 20/02/2024 19:41

I'm with OP, I call that mag Waitrose Wanky Food.
Nearly every recipe seems to feature cheese for some reason.
It must be a challenge to keep coming up with new recipes for these mags though.
MrBeccabunga likes the weekly newspaper one they do for the Sudoku puzzles and I regularly bake a chocolate buttermilk cake recipe I tore out of that years ago.
It was by Martha Thingy [from Bake Off] and originally given as an Easter bake but I noticed some years later she recycled it with very minor tweaks as a dessert.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 20/02/2024 19:41

Fucking hell. Some people will get defensive about anything. Pretentious recipes are funny.

That doesn’t mean the people laughing can’t cook or don’t enjoy good food.

I made that recipe the other weekend but with tinned rather than fresh pineapple (I don't know if that means I have to self-flagellate for being a wanky twat for slightly less time?). It went down very well in my house and was incredibly easy.

Perfectlystill · 20/02/2024 19:50

I still cook a lentil and halloumi recipe I got on a Waitrose card 15 years ago. Is that hysterical too?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/02/2024 19:55

Sheesh. You used to get a less vicious pile on on breast v bottle feeding threads back in the day!
I get you OP, I work in Caffè Nero and we give them away in our store so the recipes do provide some mild amusement during quiet moments when we have time to flick through the latest copy.

avocadotofu · 20/02/2024 20:03

We get the magazine every month and I've never found the recipes funny. It all seems like pretty standard food to me. I feel like I'm missing something.

I'm already planning that plus the greens and leeks and eggs thing - the banana, date and tahini pancakes look worth a go too 😀

Thanks for the link from me too, and I will happily take my seat in the Wanky Food Club (I have eight kinds of oil in my kitchen if you include the coconut oil in a jar) 😊
