To read the Waitrose magazine for comedy relief?

AIBU to get the Waitrose magazine just to have a good laugh at some of the pretentious recipes? DH and I sit down and go through the recipes/articles for 10 minutes while we have a cuppa and end up in mad chuckles every time! It never disappoints. I mentioned it to a colleague at lunch and whilst I was sharing it she looked at me very sternly and said -"you shouldn't get the magazine just to laugh at it, some people really appreciate those recipes. I love their recipes". I felt a bit bad and apologised if I offended her. I asked if she had ever made one of the recipes and she admitted she had never (ironically, I have made a couple of the easier ones). Am I the only one that finds some of the recipes pretentious and therefore, hilarious? I seriously hope not! Maybe I have a weird sense of humour?!

I will caveat this by saying that Waitrose is the only shop walking distance from my home, so I treat it as my corner shop. So I do shop there but only for a few top up items/special offers.

Argh I only came on this thread to laugh at the funny recipes, where are they?!

Intriguing ingredients- gnocchi wasn't something I grew up with , I had to google it - I see it as a posh version of smash , probably no better for you but would meet a wealthy MN's approval

Or the various flavours of oil - walnut oil for example - who has a kitchen big enough for half a dozen different types of oil ?

Gnocchis origins lie in Italian peasant food. Cheap and filling.
Literally millions of people have space for more than one cooking oil & the ability to recognise the difference.Do you cook?
🙄🤷‍♀️

There aren't any.

Hardbackwriter · 20/02/2024 18:30

You know what, OP, someone really needs to buy you a Yottam Ottolenghi book for your next birthday- you will find it very funny indeed!

AnnaMagnani · 20/02/2024 18:30

@WulfWuman apparently you can read it free on line.

Having had a look it is either stuff I already know how to make, stuff I'm not interested in making, and couple of things I might do.

The black bean and orange sounds weird but looks much better in the magazine

@MacaroonMacaron, that list is actually making me laugh but I don't know if it's just because I'm finding the thread funny. "Orange upside down cake" does sound funny though. Surely it's a good thing to find humour in the world where you can. It can be difficult to find sometimes!

Didn't we all make pineapple upside down cake back in the 60s/70s?

AnnaMagnani · 20/02/2024 18:33

Pineapple upside down cake genuinely was a childhood staple. The orange cake just looks like a modern version.

hattie43 · 20/02/2024 18:33

You sound a twat tbh .

Dogdo · 20/02/2024 18:35

Well "Chipping Forecast" made me smile at least.

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 20/02/2024 18:35

I've never looked at the free magazine but I googled "Waitrose recipes" and my first hits were:

Turmeric latte cookies
"Tiramichoux" 😂
Chocolate Cremeaux cornflake tart

They did make me smile. They are a bit pretentious to be fair and I can totally see the humour in it. Must be my working class background too.

Maybe I should also stick to "take a break" as someone who obviously aspires to be the next Mrs Bucket suggested above 😂😂😂

I'd think you were narrow-minded and common as muck.

LizzieSiddal · 20/02/2024 17:42

I agree with you! The majority of the recipes require some obscure ingredients which require a special trip to buy and seem to have a gazillion different ingredients.
I cook everything from scratch and always shop at Waitrose, but prefer the BBC Good Food website, simple, tasty and you don’t need a bank loan to make.

I think you've cracked the purpose of a supermarket magazine, you genius you. GCHQ will be on the phone shortly no doubt.

fedupandstuck · 20/02/2024 17:40

The only recipes that I've ever seen that I've found funny are the kinds of 1970s recipes like banana hollandaise or the truly magnificent banana candles. Not the ones in a typical waitrose magazine.

Going OT I know but there used to be an excellent Betty Draper Twitter account that included her dinner parties and canapé recipes. Francine used to reply also but she was mainly about the fags and gin. Twitter used to be such fun!

I get the Waitrose weekly newspaper (not the magazine) and the recipes in there are lovely. They do a good job of using seasonal ingredients and promoting small suppliers. Their recipe cards that they have in store are nice too

O level Home Ec staple it was!

DrSeuss · 20/02/2024 18:44

I find the Waitrose Essentials range hilarious. Their idea of what is essential is bizarre! Also the fact that nearly every product in the store must have two or more adjectives on the label.

InstrumentsofTorture · 20/02/2024 18:45

I need to know more about the truly magnificent banana candles.

You lost me at "cuppa" - sounds like Take A Break is more your kind of magazine!

I bloody love Take A Break, I always get it when I’m ill. My favourite bit is always the really shite “hacks” people send in like making coasters from cereal boxes

Came here to say the same thing. Gnocchi, just like polenta, is “peasant” food. It was a staple in my working class household growing up in the 80s (in the UK). Super cheap and easy to make. It was my favourite thing to ask my grandmother to make for me. She also made an excellent upside down cake!

You need to get a life. Some people like good food & interesting recipes. We don’t all live on egg and chips.

Some people have no choice, Christ the snobbery on here 🙄

SocksAndTheCity · 20/02/2024 19:01

I want to know what a chocolate cremeaux cornflake tart is and how I make it (assuming Waitrose doesn't sell them; I have one round the corner as well as an Aldi ten minutes away so I go to both) 😀
