Any one up? Really worried about DD

Hi all. I’m really worried about my DD. She is 8 and, over the last year, has had many episodes of dizziness. She is under a paediatrician and was reviewed on 5th January and we were told to keep an eye on her. She then had a few more episodes so we were told to book in at the GP for a blood pressure check and ECG with a nurse (booked for this week).

Half an hour ago, DD woke up crying, saying the back of her head and her forehead were really hurting. I got her water and the pain subsided after about a minute.

I am absolutely terrified - my dad has a brain tumour and he had the same symptoms as DD. She has also had another back of the head headache a couple weeks ago but nothing that woke her from her sleep before.

She is well otherwise (so can’t blame it on a virus).

I am in such a panic that I have just this moment emailed her paediatrician and asked if I need to push for a scan because of all of her symptoms, and if she thinks it
could be a brain tumour.

im sorry to waffle but I am genuinely terrified.

What shall I do? A&E diagnosed my dad as he had a big seizure, and I am so scared that Dd has something really similar.

I don't have much advice but just a hand hold Flowers nothing is scarier than our kids being sick. The likelihood of a young child having a tumour is slim. There are many simple causes that are much more likely.

You're doing the right thing getting her looked at.

Diamondcurtains · 20/02/2024 03:41

No advice really but if she wakes again and is still in pain then I’d call 111 and see what they advise x

Josette77 · 20/02/2024 03:44

I would take her to a&e as the pain woke her up.

I have a family history of brain aneurysms and was always told if a headache woke me up to go there.

I am NOT saying it's that obviously, but I would take her in to be careful.

That's a lot of pain especially for such a young kid.

Huge hug mama. xx

DistractMe · 20/02/2024 03:45

Posting a hand hold, I would be scared too, though the chances of it being a tumour are probably (hopefully) slim. Hope she feels better in the morning and you hear back from the paediatrician v. soon. x

OctoblocksAssemble · 20/02/2024 03:46

I'm here, sending a big hug. You must be terrified, but try not to leap to conclusions. I'm sure seeing your dad go through all that was traumatic, and it's hard not to see parallels, but plenty of things can cause headaches. Hopefully the pediatrician can reassure you and push for a scan if needs be, but for tonight you've done what you can, so try to distract yourself, and definitely stay off Google.

everythingthelighttouches · 20/02/2024 03:46

I’m up.

I’m so sorry to read this, it sounds very stressful. I can see why you would be worried about this, especially in light of your father’s illness.

I think I would just go to A&E next time she has a dizzy spell or if she has a terrible headache.

In the meantime, try to remind yourself that there are a million and one causes of a headache, that this subsided very quickly.

Things also seem much worse in the middle of the night. I would ask myself if I would be thinking about a brain tumour if it wasn’t for the awful situation your dad is currently in. I hope these thoughts will get you through to the morning.

Has she gone back to sleep op?

bogtrotter123 · 20/02/2024 04:01

Do you have other children ? Is there another adult in the house ? If this were me I'd call 111 with the next step guided by them and your circumstances- ie if you are only adult and other children sleeping ask for a home visit - if no other children then maybe take her in - but be sure to keep calm in front of DD so she remains as calm as possible too. Easier said than done, I know. Thinking of you x

Boatshoes · 20/02/2024 04:06

Hi all, thank you all so much. 111 said to bring her to A&E so currently sat in the waiting room. I feel so sick and helpless. Thank you all for your kind words xx

@Boatshoes good luck OP. Hopefully it's nothing serious. It's awful seeing our babies unwell isn't it? 😢. My thoughts go out to you xx

everythingthelighttouches · 20/02/2024 04:16

Ah OP, hope they are able to give you reassurance and some sort of test that will rule this out.

Fingers crossed this is a relatively quiet part of the night and you are not waiting too long 💐

Sending you hugs

Hopefully it's good news 🙏

Toomuchgoingon79 · 20/02/2024 04:42

You are in the right place. Hopefully it is nothing related and just one of those things. It's so difficult when little ones are unwell and you feel so helpless. X

SilverDrawer · 20/02/2024 04:44

Sending good vibes. I hope she’s looked at quickly and that all is well.

badwolf82 · 20/02/2024 05:00

Please know that brain tumours are incredibly rare and it’s almost certainly not that.

Has she been seen by a neurologist and evaluated for migraines? Dizziness and bad headaches can be migraines. It would be somewhat unusual but not unheard of in a young child. My migraines often feel like pain in the back of my head and neck, often with dizziness too.

If they rule out anything major then it’s worth really investigating this. Migraines are very poorly understood and researched - they mostly affect women so like everything else in women’s health there are huge gaps in the science. Symptoms can vary wildly between people and even between attacks in the same person.

decionsdecisions62 · 20/02/2024 05:05

You have to start with the most common causes not the least. One I would be more worried about is meningitis not a brain tumour. Is she sensitive to light? Is her neck stiff? Anyway call 111. If just for your peace of mind.

KnowledgeableMomma · 20/02/2024 05:07

@Boatshoes , keep us updated. Sending hugs and positive thoughts they find the cause so your little one starts feeling better!

Boatshoes · 20/02/2024 05:15

Thank you all - we have been triaged and just waiting to see a doctor. I really want her to have a scan - surely it’s not normal for a little girl to have headaches that wake her and so many episodes of dizziness? I appreciate all replies here, you are keeping me sane x

Bournetilly · 20/02/2024 05:19

I hope she’s ok and they do a scan. If they don’t I’d be paying for a private appointment/ scan.

UnderScoredBrain · 20/02/2024 06:09

Hi OP,

please push for an urgent referral for MRI

ill write more later but huge hand hold.

I have a brain tumour and those were my symptoms too.

UnderScoredBrain · 20/02/2024 06:11

I can also say that from what I’ve read genetic factor tumours have really great outcomes and there’s better routes for treatment for kids than adults.

how is your dad now?

Its ok to be terrified despite ir being horrible - it’s your kid!

where abouts are you?

determinedtomakethiswork · 20/02/2024 06:12

Wishing you and your daughter all the very very best.

RusticRon · 20/02/2024 06:15

Sending hugs to both of you. Its awful when our DC are ill and you have no idea what it is. I hope she gets a scan soon. Hopefully the docs will get to the bottom of this.

Freddiefan · 20/02/2024 06:17

Thinking of you x

UnderScoredBrain · 20/02/2024 06:35

Do you want to tell us a bit about your daughter? What does she like? What is she like?

Boatshoes · 20/02/2024 06:44

@UnderScoredBrain she is the sweetest little girl. I had a very difficult pregnancy and was told to terminate initially due to her having a lot of fluid behind her neck and she could’ve had all sorts of horrible issues. Luckily, she was fine and she has been an absolute dream since she was born. She is my little star, she really is. She’s been having headaches for a few years but each time we go to the doctor, they say she’s fine. Now the dizziness has started, and the paediatrician (who she’s under as she has coeliac disease) did seem a bit concerned but to go through the GP, but I can never get an appointment with the Gp, so I’m going in circles. I’m going to insist on a scan, I cannot keep going back and forth each time and trusting doctors without actual proof that there is nothing more going on.

thank you everyone - we are still waiting to be seen.
