To think that car insurance has gotten to be a scam

Tell me in what world is it reasonable that I’ve just paid £4500 for my (very sensible) DD’s first year of insurance, whilst DM’s 80 year old best friend is still tootling around with severe eyesight issues and dementia, having a near miss on a daily basis yet paying next to nothing insurance wise! Absolutely scandalous that the government are sitting back and allowing the horrendous price gouging currently going on with car insurance in the UK.

That seems bonkers
My grandad has just stopped driving at 96 and his insurance was £1200!

lickthepony · 18/02/2024 20:45

Couldn't agree more. Especially given that premiums are so high that any smallish knock is often not out through the insurance to avoid costs increasing on renewal.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/02/2024 20:46

Young people are much more of a risk than older people driving. It's just statistics.

And report the near miss person. That's not OK.

Redglitter · 18/02/2024 20:46

It's shocking. I got my renewal the other day it had more than doubled from last year. Went on a comparison site & got quotes even cheaper than last year so delighted at that but I thought the big new customer bonuses had been done away with & companies were meant to give equally good quotes to existing customers

RainingCatsnd0gs · 18/02/2024 20:52

Op, If someone you know is driving with poor eyesore & dementia, I suggest that you report them to DVLA & police

phishy · 18/02/2024 20:57

I never had these huge premiums. My highest insurance premium as a 21yo was for a Nissan Micra - £800 in the 2002.

Now my insurance is £250 for a Mazda as I have 20 years protected NCB.

I don’t want my premiums to increase to subsidise other people (like young people who are the biggest risk group) to have cheaper insurance.

You do realise that if you were insuring a 21 year old today that £800 would quite literally be considered pennies? At lot changes in 20 years..

Yes it's ridiculous, and the fact that you have NO option as it is illegal to drive without it.

Ponoka7 · 18/02/2024 21:00

They are not allowed to discount based on sex. Your DD is paying the price for the shithead under 25 male drivers.

Obviously insurance companies have done the maths and I imagine young men have the most large catastrophic crashes but I do wonder how many older drivers can afford to bypass insurance following an accident in a way young people can't and also how many accidents they have per mile of driving compared to younger men?

AmazingLemonDrizzle · 18/02/2024 21:00

Wow. There is no way we can spend 400 a month to I sure my child. Looks like they won't be driving for a while...

Hoping to save for lessons though.

Poblano · 18/02/2024 21:03

Is the car your DD's? If it's yours and you are still the main driver Marmalade PAYG works out a lot cheaper than being a named driver on your policy. I've done this with DD as she drives my car.

DS1 is 21 and his insurance on his own small car is £500ish. So less than the £800 quoted upthread.

XenoBitch · 18/02/2024 21:04

I no longer drive, but can't believe haw much insurance has gone up now.

My friend's late 30 DS pays over £200pm for his, and it is a old banger.

The Bank of England calculator says £800 in 2002 would cost £1411 in 2024.

And money saver supermarket says the average insurance premiums for a 21 yo in 2023 is £1,294.

So I don’t know why your dd is getting a £4500 premium.

It’s crazy how it doesn’t enter into people’s minds anymore that people should save money and insure themselves.

Wishthiswasntmypost · 18/02/2024 21:07

My 21 Yr never paid that much for insurance? The car is a small 1000cc hyundai. That seems extortionate

How many 17 or 18 year olds can afford £400 a month? I'm in my 30s in a professional job and not sure I could!

As the saying goes, the past is a different country, there are threads on here pretty much every day about how expensive insurance is for young drivers

I always thought (naively) that if I drove carefully my insurance would be low, alas not (like everyone on the thread)

Barmy and I am amazed that as citizens we accept it 🙁

My DS17 has just paid £3950 for his. He saved £2800, we leant his the rest which he is paying back at £100 p/w.

DorothyZ · 18/02/2024 21:13

Christ, have you reported the unfit driver?

Ok - if you can insure a 19 year old newly qualified driver for £1400 in the year 2024 then be my guest. It’s the exact same issue among all of DD’s peers.

Those new business discounts were loss leaders to get people on the books of the insurance company. Now insurers are charging what the insurance costs instead of artificially low first year premiums.
