To think that car insurance has gotten to be a scam

Tell me in what world is it reasonable that I’ve just paid £4500 for my (very sensible) DD’s first year of insurance, whilst DM’s 80 year old best friend is still tootling around with severe eyesight issues and dementia, having a near miss on a daily basis yet paying next to nothing insurance wise! Absolutely scandalous that the government are sitting back and allowing the horrendous price gouging currently going on with car insurance in the UK.

Exactly how much is this next to nothing that the 80yr old pays or are you just guessing

Thisisnotarehearsal · 18/02/2024 21:40

It is a total scam.

Insurance companies lost money during covid due to people pausing their insurance. now they're making it back by inflating premiums.

My premium has gone up 50 per cent for no reason.

Fair enough if a hotelier increases their prices to offset loses during covid. you've got a choice whether you go or not.

It's a legal requirement to have insurance so why the hell is it basically legal for them to extort money out of people to pay to their shareholders? Especially given the COL crisis.

BrightLightTonight · 18/02/2024 21:40

Basically, your daughter hasn’t proved herself yet. The elderly person has. The risk is greater that your inexperienced daughter will have an accident rather than some one who has been driving a number of years without making a large claim

Flanjango · 18/02/2024 21:40

My dd has been quoted between 8,000 and 23,000. Now I realise that the latter quote is obviously by a company that don't want her autism but seriously. The cars only worth 950. She can bring it down to 6,000 with a black box but it won't allow her to drive before 9am or after 8pm or do over so many miles per day. She couldn't even drive to my house and back daily with that for £6000. It's a huge scam. Young drivers were always loaded on insurance but it's beyond that now.

sleepyscientist · 18/02/2024 21:40

Third party fire and theft on a cheap car to keep the 1st year down. Mine is cheap now as I have the excess at £1000, any minor bumps are covered by me or cosmetic insurance (new car). Have a look at BMW insurance next year OP it's usually cheaper for Mini/BMW.

I wish they would stop minor injury claims (I include anything for which you will heal within 6 months as that's most people's sickness pay so would be covered anyway) to keep costs down.

Have you reported the unsafe driver to the DVLA or not? You keep ignoring the question.

I haven’t ignored anybody’s question, and if you’d actually read the thread you’d know that I’m going to..

I hadn’t even realised that BMW insurance existed! Sounds good, I will definitely be having a look for next year

DD 20 own mini 2012 1.6 pays £1600 Pa with black box and with Hastings Direct. I am a named driver and we paid it annually to save her money and she pays us back monthly. She passed her test at 18.
She selected a high excess.

This is nonsense.

NoCloudsAllowed · 18/02/2024 21:46

It's mad. My quote was about 30% up on last year. I barely drive, borderline CBA having a car.

Laurama91 · 18/02/2024 21:47

It doesn't surprise me. I passed 13 years ago and I'm sure I paid £1180 on a litre r reg fiesta. My insurance went up by £50 this year. We moved to the next village but changed from parking on road to drive which you think would be cheaper

According to DM £700/year. I’m going to take a wild guess and say that’s with no medical conditions declared (funnily enough)

Missingmyusername · 18/02/2024 21:47

Yup. My uncle has dementia, still driving. My aunt asking medical staff if it’s ok and they said yes, as long as you are with him (she can’t drive).

i’d like to know too.

i’ve just reinsured my 19 year old for their 2nd year of driving, cost £1000 as the main driver.

yes it’s a lot, but I wasn’t seeing the huge sums quoted here. You have to play around with additional drivers etc to get the best deal. Our was with both me and dh as named drivers.

Ponoka7 · 18/02/2024 21:00

They are not allowed to discount based on sex. Your DD is paying the price for the shithead under 25 male drivers.

As a society we decided to discriminate against individuals because of a group characteristic is not fair some time ago.

43ontherocksporfavor · 18/02/2024 21:49

Also occupation affects premium. When Dd was a barmaid/ studying it was £200 Pa higher than in her current finance role.

Dixiechickonhols · 18/02/2024 21:49

MaloneMeadow · 18/02/2024 21:34

Thanks for this - all really helpful, will do!!

It was earlier this year I was really impressed with police response. I filled form in one evening, policeman called me next day and said he’d visit and suggest a voluntary surrender to the elderly man (he’d cut in front of a bus, driven on wrong side of road, hit my mum (pedestrian) and seemed confused - there were witnesses. He went to see him immediately and man failed basic read a plate sight test so it moved to licence revoked. It was all done and dusted in a couple of days. My mum was badly bruised but otherwise ok and I was glad he was off the road.

BobnLen · 18/02/2024 21:50

£700 a year isn't next to nothing, I pay around £200.

Silverbirchtwo · 18/02/2024 21:51

Shop around and make sure the car they are trying to insure is a sensible one (might not be obvious but you can check insurance bands), go for one that monitors their driving with a black box. Put a parent on as a named driver, counter intuitive but apparently reduces the price.

There was a thread recently where changing the car brought it down by at least 50%.

MaloneMeadow · 18/02/2024 21:51

jm9138 · 18/02/2024 21:48

But statistically speaking it is true? That’s not discrimination, that’s fact

OP posts:
43ontherocksporfavor · 18/02/2024 21:53

@Silverbirchtwo yeah we tried that but Dd wanted a certain car. It’s fine as she’s paying the insurance and most of the car- we helped out a bit.

ComtesseDeSpair · 18/02/2024 21:15

Car insurance is a loss leader for most providers: on average it costs insurers £1.10 in claims and operating costs for every £1 received in premiums. It really isn’t a “scam”, you’re just paying what it costs to provide cover: parts and labour cost more than they did even a couple of years ago; modern cars are more expensive to repair, even a relatively minor accident can result in a significant repair bill or write off; insurance fraud cases and e.g. whiplash claims have skyrocketed in recent years.

Exactly this. There are some seriously stupid people on this thread who appear to have no idea how car insurance works. It's been extremely well-publicised recently in newspapers etc that insurance premiums have increased significantly across the board and why that is.
Of course young drivers' insurance is going to cost a fortune. Statically they are at the greatest risk of having an accident and making a claim therefore their premiums will be high. They also haven't been driving so haven't built up any no claims discount.
It isn't compulsory to own a car so if you/they can't afford the insurance premiums then don't buy one.

Taylormiffed · 18/02/2024 22:00

The mini might be the problem here. She needs something dull and sensible.

‘It isn’t compulsory to own a car so if you/they can’t afford the insurance premiums then don’t buy one.’ is an incredibly short sighted and tone deaf statement. We live in a country with awful public transport, if DD didn’t have a car she wouldn’t be able to work to help fund her studies or get to her NHS placement, without which she wouldn’t be able to graduate and become a HCP. She’s far from the only one in this situation and to be frank I don’t know what she would do if I couldn’t afford to help her out.

Ok - if you can insure a 19 year old newly qualified driver for £1400 in the year 2024 then be my guest. It’s the exact same issue among all of DD’s peers.

My son is 19. His was £1052 for the year on a Peugeot 207
