To find people with "funded" lifestyles annoying?

It's probably jealousy and social media and comparison is the thief of joy. However, AIBU to find people who have extravagant lifestyles, paid for by other people, annoying?

I follow a few "influencers" with relatively low follower counts, I wonder how are they affording the house, cars, holidays, designer gear etc. It turns out either a rich older boyfriend is paying for it, or mummy and daddy are. The influencers I find particularly annoying are the ones who seem to flaunt it, and hide the true source of their income.

Example 1: One young lady, it's clear she is dating a much older man, but always hides his face in pictures, and today posted a video of herself buying a rolex. When she's asked what she does for money by followers, she says she has a business but refuses to say what it is. I've followed her for a while (feels like car crash viewing) and 2-3 years ago she was dating some other rich guy and wrote a blog post about dating high earners, and how not to feel bad that you can't buy them presents because you don't earn much, just prepare a picnic. Anyway, I doubt she has built a business that is allowing her to buy porshe, rolex and hermes in 2 years.

Example 2: a few grown adult women on Tattle discussing one influencer, whose dad buys all her stuff (again talking London apartment, channel and hermes bags etc). The Tattlers saying "my dad funds my lifestyle and I'm not ashamed of it"

Sigh.

YABU: who cares how other people are getting money. You live your life and let them live theirs

YANBU: adults who see no need to educate themselves, work on their career and/or pay their own way - but proudly flaunt their lifestyle like they've achieved something/ are the cat who got the cream - are annoying AF

By following these people are you not helping them generate revenue? Stop following them and be less annoyed.

Oddly enough, I don't feel the same way about regular influencers who have built up followers and are getting money from brand collabs, advertising etc. This is a legitimate business in my eyes.

I just feel irked by people who clearly are not making much money from Insta (e.g. due to low follower count), but are seemingly pretending to be influencers (or other business people) but are instead getting significant hand outs from mum/dad/partner.

Gosh it annoys me but I’m also very jealous! Their lives seem so much easier than mine! But the grass is always greener right…

Thank God I'm not the only one who finds it annoying 🥳

I voted YABU because I have never followed or taken notice of an influencer in my life.

I get that everyone's different, but it just seems people don't stop moaning about them, so why do it and piss yourself off?

Or do you just enjoy the misery? 😁

I think I enjoy it on some level. Like I said, it's almost that sense of "car crash viewing". But, I also think a bit of "hate following" that PP mentioned. But you're right, I should probably just stop and get a hobby 🤣

I mean, in a very very toned down way I’m the same.

my parents came from nothing and worked themselves up to be quite wealthy. Then us kid came along.

I don’t need to work but I do work because I like it. I have a sibling who doesn’t work and lives off of my parents. And other sibling who has started their own business and is very successful. Our parents are very fair in what they give us though. We all get the same.

when we all hit our early twenties and finished studying, my parents basically said right get on with life. But they are always there if we need help. and if we failed, they got us back on our feet.

we’ve been very lucky.

This is part of the fascination I have: I really can't imagine what this life must be like - particularly for your sibling who doesn't work. I get it, why work if you don't need to? But part of me would love to be a fly on the wall and see the day to day, as I really can't imagine that life.

In terms of what it’s like, my life is very privileged and very busy. I have three, soon to be four children and DH often works away. I am thinking of doing a Masters when they are all at school, but I probably won’t actually use it tbh.

I don’t buy designer bags or have any outward appearance of wealth that most people would notice. I do have a lovely home and great holidays but nothing is “showy” and I think it’s that you are finding annoying maybe? That crass vulgarity of hot tubs and holidays in Dubai?

I don’t really know as I don’t do SM so apologies if I have misunderstood it all, but I think most people would be happier with less SM exposure. That’s the impression I get from here and from people in real life.

Thank you for your kind reply. It's definitely showy, multiple multiple holidays, lots and lots of designer, and even "ladies that lunch", which I find both fascinating and (at times) annoying.

Your life sounds lovely and fulfilling.

I think my (childfree) life is pretty standard and mundane, and I find it difficult to envision other ways of living. However, I'm grateful for it. Everyday is:

  • wake up at 9am
  • start working from home until 7.30pm
  • I take a break in the day to lift some weights in my garage
  • cook dinner
  • then a mix of clean/read/write/teach myself french/watch TV till bed

On the weekend I look round my local market town, do a food shop, maybe go to a national trust property or RSPB site.

I go on a couple of holidays a year, normally to European city off peak for a few days to look round museums/architecture/markets, eat at local restaurants.

I'm also aware of my privilege, including the "mundaness" of the everyday.

Had a friend like that. All from her aunt, she married a horrible man , who kept his salary for himself. The aunty died and her father ( aunty's brother ) took the money, he had 5 kids from 4 different women. He died, money divided up between 5 kids and last widow. Horrible man divorced my friend. My friend leaves normal , very humble life now

Precisely. So called luxuries and others such items are not reward for sex nor should be , but they are. Lucrative prostitution, some even legalise it with papers , even so, what

Pollyannamex · 18/02/2024 21:55

Just stop watching, problem solved

unsync · 18/02/2024 21:56

You know that SM algorithms are designed to do just this don't you? All the while they are mining your data and making money off you. By following these people you are contributing to their value to the SM companies, increasing their rewards and the SM companies' profits. The only loser in this scenario is you.

RoachFish · 18/02/2024 22:05

Most people have something that they just got without having to work for it and it's working out to be beneficial. For these people it's money, for others it might be a cracking sense of humour, a great laugh, a firm bum, photographic memory, good quality hair..

I don't have crazy money like these people but I am very friendly, approachable, got good hair and a bunch of really great close friends. To me that is worth a lot (OK maybe the hair a little less than a lot) but they are all things that have enriched in life and it might seem unfair that I have these things but we all have something.

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/02/2024 22:09

You can’t have it both ways. If you don’t like it don’t watch it. It’s mind numbing shite, just don’t engage

Densol57 · 18/02/2024 22:09

I dont follow any of these rubbish influencers. In fact I dont follow any influencers 🤣

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 18/02/2024 22:12

I don’t understand why you are actively damaging your mental health by following these people? My social media is funny memes, animal videos and comedy sketches. I’ve never followed an influencer in my life. Change your algorithm.

AndThatWasNY · 18/02/2024 22:13

I find people like you far more annoying as you validate this bollocks.

alwaysmovingforwards · 18/02/2024 22:15

NoFunNoFrills · 18/02/2024 19:50

@teoma I know! The easiest solution is not to follow them. I don't know why I do this to myself, but I can't look away 🤣

Honestly sounds like you've got too much time on your hands and not using it wisely.

Snugglemonkey · 18/02/2024 22:15

Yabu. Who cares? Do your thing. Live and let live. I do not follow social media stuff. I find it makes me happier. I honestly recommend it.

I'm surprised to hear so many people do not follow influencers at all, and mostly use it for funny videos etc. This is a new learning for me.

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 18/02/2024 22:27

If you follow them, you are helping to perpetuate this stuff. You are part of the problem.

If you must follow people, follow people who have something interesting to say.

LimoncelloSpritz · 18/02/2024 22:29

Who watches this shit? Bloody Influencers and bloggers are everywhere. If I Google places I want to travel to, or look on Pinterest, all I seem to get is pics of a woman wearing a floaty dress and big hat in front of pretty spots. Fuck off with your big hat, recommending places that will pay you if I click on your links.
