Cat pissing all over the house

I don’t know what to do anymore. My husbands cat just pisses everywhere and we are nearly at divorce over it. She has 2 litter trays, has been to the vets multiple times, we’ve tried felliway etc. Nothing is working and I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to live in my own house anymore. I’m too embarrassed to invite people round and we have 2 young kids and I just feel
horrible. Obviously rehoming is the last things he wants to do but I feel like we’ve run out options now. Anyone have any ideas or been through something similar?

Yes I have. Did your husband bring the cat with him into the relationship? Did he piss in his house too? Do you have more cats, kids or pets?

minipie · 18/02/2024 18:56

Is it a new thing or has cat always been like this? If it’s new, what has changed?

Mimikyuu · 18/02/2024 18:56

Yes he had the cat before we met. I also have a cat but he toilet trained and goes outside.

What litter are you using in the trays? Lots are too rough and it’s like treading on Lego bricks for them.

Ultraclumping ones are best, unhappy or ill cats piss in the house.

minipie · 18/02/2024 18:57

So has husband’s cat (Hcat) started peeing in the house since Hcat moved house and moved in with new people and a new cat?

Mimikyuu · 18/02/2024 18:59

No this is the house it’s always lived in. He had a lot of cats that were all like it but he rehomed them and just kept one. They were all just feral.

Cat is maybe not happy if it's been used to being the only cat. You also need to properly clean where the cat has been toileting. With an enzyme cleaner. Even when you can't smell the pee any more the cat can still smell it so it will still keep going to the same places again.

RandomMess · 18/02/2024 19:01

If you have 2 cats you need a minimum of 3 trays.

You need to get rid of the existing smells.

Mimikyuu · 18/02/2024 19:02

My cat doesn’t use a litter tray.

Just read your update. So this is your husband's house and it was previously full of feral cats all pissing everywhere and you moved in with your kids and your own cat?

RedBarnOwl · 18/02/2024 19:04

I couldn’t live like this, the house must smell awful and the smell often seeps into clothing, soft furnishings etc. Why doesn’t the cat go outside?

4catsaremylife · 18/02/2024 19:07

I have no helpful advice, we spent a fortune at the vet because our boys (bonded brothers both neutered) spray around the house and the vet decision was "both medically fine, just pricks".
We have an automatic chip reading catflap so they can come and go as they please, they love outdoors (we live rurally) but inside they've had to be confined to the downstairs which has a vinyl sofa that's wipe clean, no carpets and we buy industrial strength enzymatic cleaners specially for pet stains. They aren't allowed anywhere else in the house unless accompanied by a person who can observe them and react quickly. We love them dearly which is a good job because they're arseholes

Have you cleaned everything with enzyme cleaner? May mean going down to carpet underlay.

Have you tried alternatives to Feliway if cat isn't a responder such as Feliway Friends or Pet Remedy. I'm allergic to the diffusers but the Comfort Zone Calming Collar has worked a miracle on my stressed out cat.

I moved in after he got rid of the other cats and it seemed to improve things.

That cat has no fuck to give by the look on his face 😂

@4catsaremylife your “arseholes”, are just gorgeous.

But if the house wasn't properly cleaned up the cat isn't going to stop the behaviour. I'm surprised your cat hasn't been pissing inside too as it will be able to smell the piss of all the other cats.

I don't believe a word of this! They look like the best boys 💙💙

We reduced the areas dcat was allowed to roam in. Utility and outside during the day and dd's room overnight with a tray... 6 months of restrictions and was fine. When his db died he did it again. Including shitting in the bath.. Back outside... Been back in since we got him a new pal... No issues for a couple of years now.

It was cleaned up properly thanks.

This is what I want to do but then I feel it’s unfair that my cat would also have to be shut out of the main part of the house when he hasn’t done anything wrong.

I couldn't live like that. I think I'd be tempted to get my own place.

In your OP you said you were embarrassed to have people over so I assumed from that there was a smell in the house.

WickerMam · 18/02/2024 19:21

I have a cat the same. I have had him and his brother since kittens, and one has always been a bit prone to this, but it has got worse with age.

I have adopted a zero tolerance approach to anything which isn't wipe clean. One piss and straight in the bin. Otherwise he goes back again and again. This is expensive, but has improved my misery significantly. The sofa was the big one, then getting rid of the curtains and a particular carpet helped a lot. We try to keep him out of any room where he has been caught, so he basically lives in the hall now, with his three litter trays. He does have access to outside too.

Mine is 16, so too old to rehome and I just couldn't do that. But I'm basically waiting for him to die now instead, which doesn't feel better.

I will never get a cat again.

SushiMayo · 18/02/2024 19:23

How old is the cat?
