Cat pissing all over the house

Mimikyuu · 18/02/2024 18:34

I don’t know what to do anymore. My husbands cat just pisses everywhere and we are nearly at divorce over it. She has 2 litter trays, has been to the vets multiple times, we’ve tried felliway etc. Nothing is working and I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to live in my own house anymore. I’m too embarrassed to invite people round and we have 2 young kids and I just feel
horrible. Obviously rehoming is the last things he wants to do but I feel like we’ve run out options now. Anyone have any ideas or been through something similar?

It’s our house, we are married.

But why did you marry and move your children in with a man whos house was full of feral animals and piss? Do either of you have any standards? Do your children go to school? They must reek!

He didn’t though. I’m saying why even marry a man where you even had to draw up ‘terms’ where he had to remove feral animals that were soiling all over his house before you moved in in the first place? And he didn’t get rid of them all, he still had a cat pissing all over his house, he’s STILL got a cat pissing all over his house now. You can’t have guests over because your house stinks of piss. And you’re the last person (unless you’re nose blind) that should need telling that if your house is reeking of cat piss, then so are you. I remember a cat getting into our house when I was a child once and it pissed up the curtains. After many attempts of washing my mum ended up having to bin them. It LINGERS 😷

What Is your problem? You literally posted that you’re about to divorce a man over a problem he had before you married him. You were aware of his animals, house and smell before you moved in. You say this cat in particular is 5yo. You can’t have been together that long to marry and move your children into the smelly man’s house?

Mimikyuu · 19/02/2024 14:09

You’re my problem. I posted asking for help not be told my kids stink and for people to just be utter assholes. This place has become almost unusable now due to the type of people posting. Pathetic. I’ll get rid of the cats and never post again. Everyone’s happy.

OP have you noticed you posted in AIBU and not the Litter tray?

If you want proper advice on anything you need to post in one of the other sections of MN rather than posting in AIBU.

Mimikyuu · 19/02/2024 14:11

Yeah I should have done that.

YANBU.
That said, one of my cats refuses to pee in the litter trats and only will in the corners of my living room.
It's only me here though, and as much as it gets me down at times, I've decided I'll live with it because I adore the fuzzy wee shit.
I'd probably feel differently if she wasn't my cat, and certainly absolutely if I had young children.

I honestly feel for you, it's hard work and not pleasant.

Look, you need a cat behaviourist if you are going to persevere with this, As regards previous areas where the cat had peed if you can’t discard/wash the item you need to clean thoroughly with white vinegar, put it in carpet shampooer, everything, spray on suite, put a cupful in washing machine (with biological washing powder ) to clean anything you can wash, spray furniture, carpets, wood, the lot. It will smell vile to you for 24 hrs (especially while item is wet) but will neutralise piss odour better than anything else. Be liberal. its dirt cheap snd beats enzyme cleaners.

More importantly the cats can still smell it for ages and hate it. If they can detect any previously peed on areas they will continue. Get rid of litter trays (outside only) and try restricting cat to one area of house gradually expand if improves. Thing is, the cat can probably still smell the previous cats! Otherwise you may have to force the issue of getting rid of the cat. Good luck.

Mimikyuu · 19/02/2024 14:11

Yeah I should have done that.

Does the cat have enough spaces to climb high on top and relax away from small children and the other cat?

Because it can be he just needs to feel safe.

Get high climbing furniture and shelves on the wall where he can sit without anyone bothering him.

Also cat piss is like cigarette smoke. It burns into everything. Throw furniture and carpets he pissed on out.

Get new cat litter trays and wash them out every week.

My old boy with this benefits from a daily Cystease capsule. He is old and doolally, so only allowed in two rooms (with no carpets). I have a microchip cat flap as others have suggested, and when it’s too warm to want all the interior doors closed, I use baby gates to block access to certain rooms and spaces. I’ve just had to accept that this is it now till he goes, but not sure I could with such a youngster as this 5 year old cat of yours. I second behaviourist, enzyme cleaner and biological washing liquid to get rid of the smell and help prevent repeats, and the cat may still have to be rehomed. I understand how your DH feels, but once the two of you had children, the fact that he’d not been able to litter train any of the cats was always going to be an issue. Do you have a big garden? Can it be an outdoor cat with shelter in the garden? If it was part of a feral colony previously, it may actually be happier being an outdoor kitty.

Mimikyuu · 19/02/2024 15:46

She is not out doorsy at all. Thing is, I do see her pee outside. I had moderate success last year putting the litter tray outside but for some reason she started in the house again. It’s just been a nightmare.

To add OP don't try cleaning anything with bleach as that will encourage more pissing. The enzyme cleaner is what you need.

Mimikyuu · 19/02/2024 13:00

I’m going to order some enzyme stuff and put it in the carpet cleaner and do the whole house. (Well my husband is!!)

Any tips on litter tray deodorant? I hate it, I feel like it’s all I can smell even when it’s just been cleaned

To be honest, I'd try and tolerate the smell from the tray for a while (obviously cleaning it out regularly but not using deodoriser) until you've cleaned the whole house with enzyme stuff and addressed the random pissing. If the tray is the only thing in the house where she can smell cat wee, it might encourage her to use it as they tend to go where they can smell it. I may be wrong, but it makes sense to me having had a few wayward feline pissers.

Ah yes, biological washing powder is KEY to getting smells out of fabrics. And whatever you do, wash it on cold. Hot water will make it worse.

caringcarer · 20/02/2024 00:37

When you moved in you got rid of the cat's cat friends and installed your cat. Of course the cat is not happy with you. It's showing you it dislikes you and your cat and possibly your DC everyday.

They weren’t friends. She is much much happier now the other cats are gone they all used to fight all the time.

My cat used to pee indoors but luckily only in 2 specific places.. they do go back to the smell.. the only thing that worked for me, and I was in the verge of replacing carpets was to cover the area with those foil balloons (blown up) . The cat hated them and stopped peeing there.. I would confine the cat to a room whilst you deep clean and then clean again and then try the balloons

ALargeChardonnayPlease · 20/02/2024 07:33

Unsure what products you've been using but if it's not specifically made for cat urine it won't work. You've mentioned getting the enzyme stuff, it's the only thing that will biologically break down the components in the cats urine. Until you use that to clean, the cat will continue to pee in those places. Whatever you can smell, the cat can smell even stronger, so it will just keep going back. They normally pee inside to mark their territory, are there other cats that are stressing your cat out? I'd also look at the type of litter being used. Good luck, it's a pain but can be resolved!

OhmygodDont · 20/02/2024 07:36

Scrub scrub scrub and restrict access.

None of my cats are allowed to go upstairs because one shit bag will piss and shit in the bath. No reason can walk past a pristine litter tray and shit in the bath. Also likes to piss on towels if she’s not had her meat for the day so downstairs she stays.

Futb0l · 20/02/2024 07:53

If you have 2 cats you need a minimum of 3 trays.

I see this everywhere yet in RL my two cats simply both use the "preferred" tray and ignore the other two. Nothing we've ever tried has made a difference.
