It just doesn't make sense.

I'm baffled.

^How^ are people pronouncing it to think this makes sense?

WhatFlavourIsIt · 17/02/2024 17:58

I understood the question. I still don't believe you are baffled that some people get Ec from Et.
So that's good
Hth🖕

DillDanding · 17/02/2024 17:59

Baffling, but not as baffling at the frequent use of ‘que’ I see on here for ‘queue’ or even ‘cue’.

That’s not even a word (said à la Monica)! Unless you’re meaning qué, which bears no similarity in pronunciation or meaning to queue. 🥴

I dont judge people for spag errors, but it does provide interesting info as to the likely level of education

I think it’s more likely to show how much a person reads rather than education level.

I’m no expert but prepare lots of papers for work and read a lot so appropriate language and grammar is necessary. I don’t have a degree and don’t recall learning very much grammar at all even at GCSE and A-Level.

My knowledge comes from a lot of reading I think.

I don't disagree @Merryoldgoat but I would say that the two are fairly closely correlated.

We had a PowerPoint presentation at DC's school this week. There were numerous punctuation and grammar mistakes and I counted five instances of ect!

I hope you let them know. What a shit show.

Can’t ‘bare’ any of it.

But I do hate myself at the same time. I usually understand what is being said; pedantry is a really unattractive trait!

Oh, I agree. Unless what's written is truly unintelligible I generally understand it but I just can't help being ridiculously annoyed by it!

My daughter bought me a mug baring bearing the phrase "I'm silently correcting your grammar" 😬

IntriguingFactJumble · 17/02/2024 18:19

Since the Internet I have taught myself not to comment on ephemeral errors in forums or emails. Before that and elsewhere I point out mistakes if I think corrections would be welcome. Right and polite are not always close!

To not understand ect?

Where does it end though?

Free reign
Que

Rest bite
ETC ETC

Life is tough for pedants 😔

You need to bare with all the non-pedants on here.

Dahlietta · 17/02/2024 18:41

pedantry is a really unattractive trait!

I beg to differ!

@tumtitum yes I was expecting an interesting discussion on the theories about how ECT works!

That would have been interesting.

In France and Spain people write ect as the abbreviation for Et CeTera.

No, we don't use ect in Spain. We use etc or etcétera.

Riapia · 17/02/2024 19:02

I see posters that use ‘gonna’ in their posts on here. Actually written down.

MaloneMeadow · 17/02/2024 19:03

Etcetera. The first 3 letters are etc hence that’s what it gets shortened to. What’s confusing about that? It’s not ect..

And?
Are you suggesting using it wasn't a stylistic choice, but a mistake?

positivesliceofpie · 17/02/2024 19:10

ECT.

I roared with laughter when my daughter gave me mine, she knows me so well! Trouble is though I don't always do it silently 😂

NannyGythaOgg · 17/02/2024 19:15

The people who use that derivative are not educated enough to know the correct contraction.
You however are educated enough but just choose to be mean about others lack.

CatamaranViper · 17/02/2024 19:18

I pronounce it wrong but spell it correctly

They are probably the same people who pronounce ask as "aks".

My DD is an English academic and she told me that 'aks' is part of a dialect of older English. 'Ask' is the newfangled gibberish apparently.

shoppingshamed · 17/02/2024 19:24

Zanatdy · 17/02/2024 17:24

It’s a typo obviously as no-one pronounces it that way

It's not a typo, people really think that's what the abbreviation is, it's all over the internet

Either they were never taught the correct thing or they were and didn't learn it for whatever reason

Kattenburg · 17/02/2024 19:28

Jeannne92 · 17/02/2024 17:23

the king and i GIF by dani

No it's etc. in France too. It's etc. everywhere in the world because as you've pointed out, it's the abbreviation of 'et cetera', or 'et caetera'.

Anyone half-sane understands ect to mean etc, 'eksetra' to mean etc.
Etc, etc,.etc.
