It just doesn't make sense.

I'm baffled.

^How^ are people pronouncing it to think this makes sense?

OP posts:
LauderSyme · 17/02/2024 17:29

I agree it's because lots of people wrongly say 'ecksetera'.

There's a Reddit community for spag errors called "Bone Apple Tea" based on the misapprehension, "Like when the food hella good you say bone apple tea, it's like French or some shit..." 😂

Pedants, if you go there your heads will explode!

TwelveKeys · 17/02/2024 17:32

I see it multiple times daily and still find it hard to parse - I just stumble over reading an "ec" sound first rather than "et".

I think it's increasing on here actually. I did think it would be a kind thing to point out so people know in future but no way would I do it because apparently it's nasty and finding fault.

I'd definitely want to know if I was using a phase incorrectly but I have realised I am not representative of most people! Supposably.... Wink

Baffled.

Oh please.

But here, have what you're after:

You are a superior being, much smarter than these illiterate fools you must suffer on the daily.

Do you feel better now this has been confirmed? I do hope so.

This.
Plus, weren't any of the other multitude of threads about this (at least 3 or 4 this week) good enough for you, OP?

tumtitum · 17/02/2024 17:13

Am I the only one who opened this thread expecting a thread about treatment resistant depression?! 🤣

I genuinely did wonder if someone meant this once as they said their DP had had depression counselling, ect, but then I got my head bitten off for simply asking (in what I thought was a non-patronising way)!

The thing is I think it's kind of arrogant to assume someone means something different from what they type, without asking... but most other people are in the "they obviously didn't mean that" camp.

Can’t ‘bare’ any of it.

But I do hate myself at the same time. I usually understand what is being said; pedantry is a really unattractive trait!

I keep reading 'would of' and I have just read it on another thread. 'Of' is not verb.

"of" is not verb...

Say what?

Muphry happily rides again.

I used to be a pedant. I am still a stickler for doing it right myself but try hard not judge people for their mistakes any more as (weirdly because of MN) realise that it's not such a big thing, really.

I could care less

I contacted a plumber for a quote recently and he asked when he could come and take "alook" 🤯

And I keep seeing 'incase' and 'infact'. I'm resigned to them becoming standard variants in the near future.

Me too.
It's always so fascinating on these threads to see the people trotting out the mistakes that leave them "baffled" and with "itching teeth" and bemoaning the fall of civilisation a) making just as many, and arguably more serious, mistakes, themselves and b) not knowing nearly as much about language as they think they do.

I'm resigned to the loss of correct punctuation.

Nanny0gg · 17/02/2024 17:46

JMSA · 17/02/2024 17:04

Is it a typo, maybe? Or do you keep seeing it from multiple people?

It's on here ALL the time!

People don't read anymore so they go by what they 'hear'

10ThousandSpoons · 17/02/2024 17:48

GretaGip · 17/02/2024 17:19

I'm not baffled about what it means, I'm confused how that constriction is derived from the pronunciation.

A couple of posters have enlightened me that some folk may be pronouncing it differently than I do.

So that's all good.

Are you? Are you really confused? Really?

bengalcat · 17/02/2024 17:49

Another one thinking the OP was wondering how ECT works for severe depression etc

SnowyPetals · 17/02/2024 17:50

There's a guy at work who is otherwise most articulate, but always says "pacific" instead of specific.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 17/02/2024 17:51

It's the glottal stop used in words in some SE accents e.g. "Lu^on" instead of "Luton". It means they don't necessarily know about the first letter t in et cetera if they're trying to spell as they speak.
Pacifically completely baffles me. Why do they think it's anything related to the ocean?!

SisterMichaelsHabit · 17/02/2024 17:52

@SnowyPetals LMAO X post. 🤣 You should tell him you're going on a cruise to the Specific Ocean.

I'm resigned to the loss of correct punctuation.

I'm still amazed The Who managed to release something entitled, "The Kids are Alright" in 1965 and somehow no one who worked on it spotted the error.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/02/2024 17:55

I think people pronounce it... sorry for this...

Eck tseterra or tsettra

Hence ECT. Very common pronunciation in London.

I dont judge people for spag errors, but it does provide interesting info as to the likely level of education
