Digging a grave and burying your sadly deceased dog in a public park

Am I being unreasonable to think there are probably laws against this and burying your much loved pet in a park is not a great idea?

Go on, tell us what has happened!

LaPalmaLlama · 15/02/2024 21:19

I mean, apart from anything, if you don't dig v deep it'll get dug up by a fox and gnawed as soon as it's dark (happened to my friend's dog- buried on the farm).

BobbyBiscuits · 15/02/2024 21:19

Maybe the forest/ woods in a secluded area. Unless you have a garden to bury it in then you need to pay for a cremation really. Did you/ someone you know get 'caught' doing this?

That was my first thought!

Also won't people be suspicious if you start digging a 6ft deep hole??

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 15/02/2024 21:21

I would have thought there’d be rules to stop ground water contamination, aside from the risk of animals digging it straight up again.

Ethylred · 15/02/2024 21:23

Does the park belong to you? If so, bury away. Otherwise, don't.

HoweverWeare · 15/02/2024 21:24

Backstory definitely required

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 15/02/2024 21:24

Jesus Christ just yeet it into the sea.

Mementomorissons · 15/02/2024 21:26

What did you see?!

Dontlookatmelikethat · 15/02/2024 21:35

No it's not a great idea. When is this person planning to go out to this public park with a shovel, dig a huge hole in the ground and then chuck a wrapped corpse into it? Better hope a passerby doesn't think it's a killer out burying their victim and call the fuzz!

TheHorseOnSeventhAvenue · 15/02/2024 21:36

Genuinely witnessed this morning. Joked about them burying a body and sadly was their dog. Bit like a scene from a bad sit-com.

I understand cremation fees are high and don’t think they have a garden but more worried they won’t have dug deep enough.

You can only bury pets on your own land, but you can scatter/inter ashes anywhere with landowner's permission.

There aren't any watercourse restrictions for burial of small pets, but there's a set of rules for larger ones. All must be buried deep enough.

(England, might be different elsewhere)

Cazpar · 15/02/2024 21:37

Fairly sure that this isn't legal. There's different rules for livestock and pets, but for pets I'm fairly sure the only place you can bury them is your own land.

10 am this morning - may have walked past them if they were not sporting a high viz vest!

Someone found a shallow grave in some woods near us, lots of drama, helicopters and forensics teams etc. It turned out to be a pet.

Christ, what a waste of resources.

But what do you do if you have no garden/suitable garden for burial and can't afford a cremation?

YANBU
I love dogs, and love the bones off of mine, but I know that you can't pull shit like this.

Communal cremation (where you pet gets cremated with other pets) is not that expensive... and stuff like this is what you take on board when you have a pet.

JupiterSymphony · 15/02/2024 22:09

My Dad buried our dogs underneath a tree at our home. I was gutted to see the Tree gone and a guest house built on the area on Rightmove. My poor loves would have been desecrated.

I did this with my cat, went a bit off the beaten path, dug a deep hole, what's the problem really?

TheSnowyOwl · 15/02/2024 22:11

Obviously they shouldn’t but if they don’t have a garden and can’t afford cremation, you can understand that they don’t want to throw their much loved pet out with the rubbish.

I imagine the place has some sentimental reason where they enjoyed walks and I hope the grave is deep enough, as it would be heartbreaking for them to discover it’s not.

NotaNorovirusFan · 15/02/2024 22:12

I don’t think it’s legal to bury a pet in a public place, someone once told me it’s not technically legal for the vet to give you back your dead pet after they’ve been PTS as they are then classed as hazardous waste or something.. not sure how true that is though!

K0OLA1D · 15/02/2024 22:12

No one thought it was funny the first time

CheerioDarling · 15/02/2024 22:13

Did you actually see the dead dog? I would think about alerting police if not; it could have been anything they were burying, hiding in plain sight. Explain the full story, just report on 111, no need for drama - but it is very odd behaviour.

10ThousandSpoons · 15/02/2024 22:13

I'd report it to the council
