Just that really. What did you want to be when you grew up and what do you do now?

In primary school, I wanted to be a singer (Kylie), and in secondary school I wanted to be a lawyer (Ally McBeal). I now work in marketing.

How about you?

Wanted to be a doctor until I was about 16 then decided I'd rather be a nurse. I'm a nurse Smile

A nun living in a nunnery, which is a bit odd as I don’t even come from an abrahmic religion background. I think it was the appeal of living in a women's only commune type of thing really.

SAHM now, still find the idea of living in a womens only commune very appealing (I’m very fond of DH but still, I would be sorely tempted if I had the opportunity).

I wanted to be Indiana Jones, until I realised that archaeology was not so fast paced.

Then I wanted to be MacGuyver.

I'm now a Production Manager in TV/documentaries. Not as exciting, but I guess I solve a lot of problems using very little, a bit MacGuyver-ish.

Clarelita · 15/02/2024 19:25

My brother is an anaesthetist for that exact reason ... won't do maternity as they're usually awake lol 😂

And the number of patients doubles if you are doing it right!

I love my job now. I know the impact of my job is years or decades down the road but hearing patients stories of trying to live with the side effects of medication and with some of the driving force behind some of research stopping horrid side effects. Plus my own experience of medication with horrid side effects.

Astronaut.
I'm now a GP.
I would have been a terrible astronaut, I feel sick if I go too high on a swing.

Last job was office management.
Now do nothing and claim benefits due to ill health. (not part of my childhood plans!)

I wanted to be an air hostess. Got a stroke in my teens and never fully recovered ☹️. Now I am a compliance officer.

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 15/02/2024 19:32

In primary I wanted to be a nurse. Secondary school a nursery nurse-that was up until work experience in a nursery from which I decided, fuck that. Didn't know what I wanted to do after that so kind of drifted into retail and then office admin before I became utterly bored and retrained. I now work in secondary education with high behaviour students, never a dull moment...

GratitudeGoddess · 15/02/2024 19:34

I wanted to be a child psychiatrist and I ended up being a child psychotherapist 😊

stayathomer · 15/02/2024 19:36

Always wanted to work with horses/ animals and was talked out of it by many in the stables I worked in due to wages. I ended up in pharmaceutical companies, then retail and just in the last few weeks sahm (and author but not earning properly yet- earn some months nothing others). It’s one of my only regrets that I didn’t do veterinary nursing

DistinguishedSocialCommenator · 15/02/2024 19:42

A nurse
A doctor
A police officer
Then a pilot
At college, I was studying, aiming to become an accountant but I then thought, stuff that

I ended up in social services work for a good 30 years and my first job
was working as a clerk for family friend's firm

TBH, I have never wanted to work and live off the dole. Thankfully, my parents ensured I had to get off my backside and work they did not allow any of us to unemployed. I was angry when stupid and young but they did us the biggest favour as we have been on our own two feet since the day I and siblings started work

Work is rewarding if you are of the prudent type
