My new sliding door was either installed incorrectly by my builder or they sent me the wrong one . But I am so upset I can’t make sense of it 😞

it was meant to slide to the left when looking from the outside ( so when stood in the garden) see pic below.

BUT I have just gone to the hose to check it ( it’s been fitted I was at work) and the direction of the sliding door is correct however the key lock is on the OUTSIDE ! It should be on the inside.

what do you think ? Did the builders fit it wrong ? Or was I sent a door that should slide to the right ?

do you think I will get a replacement door as it has already been fitted? It was expensive so I am really upset

That's wrong, they need to sort it out! How on earth would it be safe to have a door that locks from the outside? Fire indoors and you can't get out locked door.

Tell them to get it sorted immediately!

HelloMiss · 14/02/2024 20:28

What did your builder say when you paid him?

PocketBattleship · 14/02/2024 20:29

How on earth would it be safe to have a door that locks from the outside?

Like every front door, you mean?

Horseradrad · 14/02/2024 20:31

My builder is doing the whole house Reno and I’ve not spoken to him yet.

he has followed instructions and fitted the door so it slides the way we wanted.
I think we have been supplied an incorrect door.

What your front door locks from the outside and you cannot unlock it from the inside?

Or you can't lock it from the inside and therefore unlock it from the inside?

What an extremely dangerous set up you have?

Or you don't understand how sliding doors work?

You'd go out into your garden to lock it, then how would you get back in?

missmollygreen · 14/02/2024 20:36

Just speak to the builder?
Who ordered the door, you or the builder?
One of you will have to contact the company and see if a resolution can be found

Yes the door has been manufactured incorrectly, so the builder may well have alerted the supplier and they'll be on to it. Because currently is unusable.

Containerhome · 14/02/2024 20:37

Why can't it be locked via both sides?

LuluBlakey1 · 14/02/2024 20:38

Yes, you will get a replacement.

Of course not thanks for wilfully misunderstanding. There's no keyhole on the inside, only on the the outside, there's a rotary latch so you don't need the key to lock or unlock it from the inside. Maybe OP's door has some similar arrangement.

Horseradrad · 14/02/2024 20:49

I ordered the door from supplier and got my builder to fit it. The supplier don’t install, they are supply only.

Im hoping the can replace it for me. Just worried they will say no as we have fitted it already !

Oinkypig · 14/02/2024 20:51

@PocketBattleship I suppose in theory that could be the case (never seen a sliding door with that type of lock) but I’m fairly sure the OP would know that having the key hole on the inside and the rotary latch (helpful for burglars) on the outside was definitely wrong

Moreorlessmentallystable · 14/02/2024 20:52

I mean he has followed instructions but you'd think a professional builder would have seen the door and let you know it was incorrectly supplied instead of installing with the lock out ...

Gymmum82 · 14/02/2024 20:55

Does it not have a key hole on both sides? Our sliding doors (we have 3 sets in this house) all have locks on both sides of the door. You lock with a key which can be removed

PocketBattleship · 14/02/2024 20:58

@Horseradrad Have you actually seen the inside of the door or just the outside?

I think they will argue it should have been checked before fitting

It might be a bit of a slog to get a replacement

This!

MadeForThis · 14/02/2024 21:29

The supplier should replace the door. Phone them in the morning and let them know that the lock mechanism is on the wrong side.

Debdelight · 14/02/2024 21:35

It's standard to have a keyhole on the outside. Some people do use their back doors to exit their property. Also if there's ever a problem that your front door stops opening for any reason then you can still go out the back way and lock up behind yourself

The recommendations now are that double glazing companies put a thumb turn on the inside as in the event of a fire you do not need the key to exit.

In short there's nothing wrong with your door.

aitchteeaitch · 14/02/2024 21:39

Surely you need a lock outside anyway. Otherwise you couldn't leave the house by that door and lock it behind you on the way out. We have a sliding door at the back, and it has a keyhole on both sides.

Horseradrad · 14/02/2024 21:41

@Debdelight The door I ordered was slimline . The slim sightlinr on on the outside . This is how I know the definitely wrong. Also , you can see the screws on the lock that is currently ‘inside’

This🤦🏻 I can lock my patio door from the outside and the inside. Crazy.

Fuzzynavelgazer · 14/02/2024 21:49

The picture that you posted of the order form....somewhere on there it should say whether the drawing is viewed from the inside or outside.
I've dealt with a few window/door suppliers and some draw from inside, some from out.
Which does yours say?

Debdelight · 14/02/2024 21:52

All screws for the locking mechanism and handles should be on the inside. If on the outside it is way easier for anyone attempting to get in to unscrew them and mess with the lock to gain access
