To be embarrassed about my childish eating behaviour?

I’ve started to really notice lately that my behaviour around food looks quite childish, greedy, both.

Some examples:

  • out with DCs and other mums, if we go to a cafe they usually have a coffee and maybe something like a toasted teacake if any food, regardless of what the children are eating. I will have more similar to the kids, maybe a burger, milkshake etc
  • Out with other family members recently at a nice restaurant for dinner, I had cleared my plate when they were at best halfway through then was sitting there twiddling my thumbs and picking at bread for ages
  • same occasion, I asked for more bread twice
  • I bought a box of crème eggs yesterday for the kids and have now eaten three of them

I am starting to feel people noting it and judging. I think I’ve always been like this and my parents are quite embarrassing to eat out with and show zero self control. I’m starting to feel ashamed and that I don’t fit in with other mums.

AIBU to think that my behaviour is not normal and need to do something about this? If so, any advice?

To note I am a healthy weight.

Exactly! Even if we would prefer a milkshake over a coffee, as adults (especially parents who have children we need to stay healthy for and model good eating habits for) most of us would usually choose the healthier option.

Milkshake can be the healthier option.

How can a milkshake ever be the healthier option? They are full of sugar! Have one if you want, but you can't argue that it's healthier than a cup of coffee or tea.

Or are you thinking of those Starbucks drinks that masquerade as coffee (Frappuccinos, etc.)?

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/02/2024 16:05

Used to make our kids a milkshake in the blender. Semi-skimmed with a banana or raspberries, strawberries sometimes a spoonful of honey if we fancied it. Vitamins, calcium, potassium and sometimes anti bacterial/anti inflammatory. Good for adults too, I’d have thought. Especially expectant mums. Darn sight healthier than caffeine.

No, don’t do Frappuccino’s, etc.

Milk is full of sugar and so is fruit, especially bananas. And it’s going to rush straight into your bloodstream because you’ve blended it. Eating the whole fruit is healthy - blending it into a milkshake is not.

I don’t care, tbh. Nearly 60, fit and healthy, adult kids are too and I’ve got great teeth (no fillings) as have the kids 🤷‍♀️

There is no such thing as a 'healthy' or unhealthy food, food is just food, your diet could be unhealthy but not one single item on its own

Milk is a carbohydrate if thats what you mean, its not 'full of sugar' in terms of added sugar

Have you ever met a pizza crunch? Pretty sure that’s firmly in the unhealthy food column! 😂

Ok, having now looked this up, perhaps I will make a couple of exceptions!!

Its also reminded me that in america I think, they do deep fried butter.

Remarkable.

Victoriancat · 15/02/2024 20:28

Wherever I go I will have the silliest cold coffee or milkshake available and any sort of cake 😂 I couldn't care less

Abbyant · 15/02/2024 20:34

I’m the opposite as someone who’s overweight I notice I eat a lot slower then other people and will only get a coffee when on play dates so I don’t seem to be a stereotypical “fatty”

Stormyweathr · 15/02/2024 20:40

was you a fussy eater as a kid by any chance?

I was a really really fussy eater as a child often refusing point blank to eat anything at all, including sweets and chocolate etc

now as a adult I really enjoy food, I eat fast and I eat lots (also a healthy weight)

my parents love seeing me clear a plate of food for the above reason, and often offer me their leftovers knowing I will also polish them off

nothing wrong with what you have described.

OP?

Noseybookworm · 16/02/2024 00:08

I don't think there's anything wrong with what you eat, I'd probably rather have a burger than a teacake! If you're regularly finishing your meal before other diners, you're maybe eating too quickly? Try to slow down and really chew and savour each mouthful. Pause to have a few sips of water during the meal. You'll probably find that you're eating less if you slow down and don't bolt your food down - it's better for your digestion too!

OK, but that's not really a milkshake is it? That's a smoothie.

If you get a milkshake at a cafe or restaurant it's basically blended ice cream. A completely different thing.

Presumably you're chewing your fruit before you swallow it?

A blended banana is no different to a whole one. Christ alive.

Quite

Good fucking grief @Serrates
