Aibu to go on strike over world book day

DD2 wants to go as an animal for WBD. I don't want to spend money/time/the earth's resources on making her an animal costume. It doesn't help that she is DC2 so I have done lots of costumes for DC1 in the past. DD2 us in year 4, if that's relevant. School have given the option of wear PJs but she wants to go as this animal.

Has she got any brown clothes? I'd just stick her in browny/beige clothes and make a cardboard headband with a drawn beaver stuck on it.

Buy plain pyjamas in the right colour and then marker on the relevant patches/stripes. She can then wear them for the rest of the year.

Most "animal" headgear can be made using an alice band and some felt ears/a ruff/pompoms.

@10ThousandSpoons my mum let my older sister have her ears pierced at age 6 or 7. She screamed the house down and eventually the earings came out after a couples of day.
My mum said "No" to me when I was a similar age.
Should my mum have let me do it because she agreed to my older sister doing it?

She should have decided based on you as an individual, not just said no because of your sister.

I think the helmet has to be particular colours. DH is going to look for a 2nd hand bike helmet.

The issue with DD is that when she sets her mind on, say, dressing up as a specific beaver, she won't be persuaded to the Anne from the famous five or Elizabeth Bennett 😁

Nevermind, it's solved now. I'll try to be less mean. It won't be long til she's too big for this and maybe I will miss it...🙄

They still do it at my DD's Secondary so you never know, you might be doing it for a while longer!

If it is recycling things then fair enough. Not as a one-off thing to wear, it's almost as bad as fast fashion.

Hope you can do something as reading is very much to be encouraged.

That's cool I hadn't seen this before.

I know your DH said he would get a bike helmet but if he can't then either some felt or a cardboard and some colouring in and this would be pretty simple to make a mask out of

Then some brown clothes and a tail if she wants one

I can understand the feeling uninspired though its not like you can wander into tesco and get a ready made costume for the character!

On the off chance it's a leopard, Next have nice leopard print pyjamas, so all she'd need is a mask and to pin a tail on.

I mean cyclist teddy bear is a pretty cute look

I know I keep banging on about a mask and it might not be what you want to do, but that's basically a circle, cut out of card, it's an incredibly simply shape to draw/trace on and then she colours it in

It's a couple of hours activity for her and costs you the price of a pack of card if you don't have any in

Honestly that would be my choice

@Needmorelego the kids love them, and dog man. I'm starting to feel like maybe she should read something with some actual sentences though, given she's in year 4 and is more than capable! She is very tickled by the humour though.

@TigerOnTour I loved reading Captain Underpants (same writer as Dog Man) when my daughter was about the age of your one.
I remember there was a book sale at her school and I got all excited because they had the latest on a discounted price - I was way more excited than she was 😂

Oh I meant instead of a helmet, just do the whole thing helmet included as the mask iyswim

But only if you can't get the helmet of course

@Universalsnail and @baileybrosbuildingandloan DC1 was a bit more biddable and willing to choose a character we had stuff for, so I think it didn't seem as wasteful. Anyway, I've bought DC2 some horrible brown clothes so she can dress as a beaver, and she is so excited 😆
