Aibu to go on strike over world book day

DD2 wants to go as an animal for WBD. I don't want to spend money/time/the earth's resources on making her an animal costume. It doesn't help that she is DC2 so I have done lots of costumes for DC1 in the past. DD2 us in year 4, if that's relevant. School have given the option of wear PJs but she wants to go as this animal.

@dimllaishebiaith you have a point tbh. I should make a bit more effort. I don't think I ever bought DC1 anything specific costume wise. But she was choosing more reasonable characters like where's Wally etc. DD2 wants to be a beaver 🦫 😂

A brown hoodie, some felt sheets, tack the pieces on lightly with a few stitches and you can cut it off after and keep using the hoodie

Or brown clothes and a cardboard beaver mask, draw around a beaver outline from online and then she can colour it in and you just need a bit of ribbon or some elastic to fix it on

Just do this. It’s an easy costume, I thought you were going to say something complicated. You can buy a beaver mask for a few quid on Etsy. And if she doesn’t own any brown clothes then I’d buy some brown pyjamas so they’ll get used again.

Franticbutterfly · 13/02/2024 19:44

I feel exactly the same about it. But don't mind making a costume. When DD1 was little she went as burglar Bill which I fashioned from a white t-shirt, black duct tape and a flat cap.

Franticbutterfly · 13/02/2024 19:46

Or dress all in one colour and be a crayon from the day the crayons quit (age dependant obviously).

MamaAlwaysknowsbest · 13/02/2024 19:46

I just have to buy two per year. One for their wow days and one for their book day. Sometimes they ask for colours, dots, teddy bear, other cultures colours and one name it.

@dimllaishebiaith don't be daft. Surely there's times you do something for a first child that you realise wasn't good/worth the money/worth the effort/was a disaster etc so you aren't going to do it all again with child 2 and beyond.

And that's how you make sure your kids know who's your favourite.

TigerOnTour · 13/02/2024 19:56

It's a very specific beaver who wears a helmet, not a common or garden beaver.

I've found some brown clothes on vinted and actually some might even get worn again. Thanks for that idea!

@dimllaishebiaith yes that was my point - make one !
But the child has to be the designer and make as much as they can. Not the OP.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/02/2024 20:01

Bit mean to do it for the first and not the second!

Something like a cat is pretty easy - black clothes, but some cheap cat ears and paint her face with whiskers?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/02/2024 20:01

Oh ignore that - I see it’s a specific beaver not just any old animal!

Needmorelego · 13/02/2024 20:02

@10ThousandSpoons my mum let my older sister have her ears pierced at age 6 or 7. She screamed the house down and eventually the earings came out after a couples of day.
My mum said "No" to me when I was a similar age.
Should my mum have let me do it because she agreed to my older sister doing it?

You are going to have to point to where you think I disagreed with this point...

I'm confused why you think you get to dictate any of this tbh but sure the child can make it with the OP providing age appropriate support

Yes. Because your ears are not her ears.

I don't know that book, do you mean like a knights helmet or a safety helmet?

I feel like that's probably one of those things that you could ask around on a local Facebook group for and someone would have one lying around from a previous world book day

But if its a knights helmet that would be pretty easy from cardboard as well

Needmorelego · 13/02/2024 20:09

@dimllaishebiaith@10ThousandSpoons sorry I just don't think parents have to do exactly the same experiences for all their children.
@dimllaishebiaith I don't think I was "dictating" - I was suggesting advice actually 😂

Avatartar · 13/02/2024 20:11

Charity shop bits and clothes, they may even have a cuddly beaveresque toy she can tie onto a headband to wear or take the stuffing out and open the bottom seams to make a mask out of

yes, you've said. Repeatedly. I'm not sure why you felt the need to tag me in another post to say particually when the OP agreed with me in the first place

If its a beaver in a safety helmet this might work for a mask idea?

I think the helmet has to be particular colours. DH is going to look for a 2nd hand bike helmet.

The issue with DD is that when she sets her mind on, say, dressing up as a specific beaver, she won't be persuaded to the Anne from the famous five or Elizabeth Bennett 😁

Nevermind, it's solved now. I'll try to be less mean. It won't be long til she's too big for this and maybe I will miss it...🙄

🤣🤣 Every time I think I miss making my nephews I end up helping my neighbour with her three kids costumes and have flashbacks to why I don't miss it at all
