Names have been changed to protect the innocent and deranged alike.
currently sat in my living room with two drunk men and a damp spaniel who are refusing to leave or answer their phones and it’s all my fault…
The background is that DP and I have been together some years now and he comes from a pretty well to do British home with two eccentric parents and one thoroughly batshit sister. We’ll call the sister ‘Tilly’ and she is the catalyst of all chaos and is the main character in all family dramas.
DP and I both work in the arts and are very well versed in the ways of the drama queen and the ego fiend and are very good at handling hard work people so we muddle along with Tilly and do our best to include her. FIL is ex military and bloody hilarious at times, a bit old fashioned but overall pleasant.
MIL is an extremely overprotective and epitomises the bored middle class housewife and frankly it’s a shame they stopped giving out Valium on the NHS a couple decades ago because she’d benefit somewhat.
Tilly has never had a job or been to university or even attended a drs appointment on her own, partly due to a weird codependent relationship with MIL, partly due the fact that she has the IQ of a Jaffa Cake. She is very skilled at spending FIL’s money and manipulating people so that she enjoys the lifestyle of low ranking royal , she gets chauffeured about and likes shopping and occasionally will offer up a bit of volunteer work so she can post about it on social media with her latest fashion purchases carefully shoehorned into the frame.
MIL had an event today at the house, I won’t name the organisation but it’s very ‘jam and Jerusalem’ and she is highly respected in this organisation so wanted Tilly, FIL and the dog out of the house so she could go full ‘hostess with the mostest’ and be sure there’d be no tantrums or humping or farting or whatever Tilly and FIL and the dog might have done to cramp her style…
so the day was engineered that FIL and DP would take the dog to the groomers, leave him there, wander around the shops and get some new shirts for FIL and I would take Tilly with me to a work thing (that I really didn’t want to) but I’m happy to do my bit. Tilly has behaved like an absolute cockwomble all day, she has complained about everything, offended my colleagues and friends and embarrassed me profusely because for once she was not the centre of the universe and none of these people were responding to her Disney Princess energy. I have spoken to her several times about her tone and what she’s saying and literally begged her to behave. In the end I’d had enough and left her outside a pub.
I walked home and poured myself a large glass of wine and waited for the shit to hit the fan.
I text DP and told him and he said he was on his way home. I was pleased. A few minutes later , two very drunk and very wet gentlemen and a bemused spaniel appear in my kitchen. I’m just drying the dog when FIL’s phone rings, it’s MIL he puts her on speakerphone…
she is nothing short of apoplectic, SIL apparently had to ride the train the full 5 stops home alone ( the horror!) has soaking wet hair ( thoughts and prayers) and burst into MILs meeting sobbing and hyperventilating and then for the crescendo, threw herself onto the floor and pretended to be sick. MIL has had to put her to bed and I quote ‘forgot to serve the canapés’ because of the drama.
pissed FIL and DP ( yes they went to the pub rather than shopping) have simply howled with laughter into the phone and hung up. my name is now of course mud with MIL and SIL and I have the rest of the family holding up at mine because FIL ignored missed calls from TIlly which is why she had to travel home in the rain and is now on her deathbed.

@PandaChopChop shit. Seriously? I feel like I need to give these another chance minus the 90’s chemistry. Do tell! I’ll send for some. Someone the other day gave me an actual old school lucozade and I was absolutely off my tits on the glucose. I’ve ordered some on Amazon 🤣 bring on the pink Jaffa cakes . I’m currently in a very YOLO phase of my life right now. Just sat by the letterbox waiting the Mitsubishi’s from Holland and MD20/20.
perhaps this is why we’ve been tiling a bathroom since November ?😂

You are very funny! I had to reread this before I recalled that Mitsubishi’s (mitzis we used to call them) aren’t an actual electronic item you’re referring to! snigger

Never heard of the other though.

I might order some old school Lucozade but that always made me boak. I was always an Ice cold Ribena light or Diet Coke girl and red bull with vodka to keep me awake at clubs and raves!

Thejackrussellsrule · 14/02/2024 23:14

I enjoyed reading that, no advice though!

WonderingAboutThus · 14/02/2024 23:16

You're my hero

MouseMinge · 14/02/2024 23:16

I'm sort of seriously ill at the moment. Well, not sort of, I am but we won't go into it because I'd like to retain a sense of doomed mystery. The point being that a couple of months ago I craved old school Lucozade to go with my old school cream of tomato soup which was what cured all ills when I was a child. I am now mainlining Lucozade. It has become the most delicious elixer known to man and an ice-cold glass brings me nothing but joy. I wonder what mad chemicals it's made up of to be that colour and that flavour but I don't wonder too heavily because then I might have to admit that I should drink something a bit healthier - to be fair I have a slight dependency on apple juice too - and that would never do.

Turnbacknowbeforeitstoolate · 14/02/2024 23:18

@Jamazon1 this is a terrible word association joke😂 I absolutely salute it though. Bonding is something that I’ve tried so hard with Tilly, and we have bonded, we’ve been successful sometimes with bonding, we’ve had good times together , as the tiles slide off the wall and the grout collects in a ragged mess at the bottom of the wall though. I wonder if the attempt to bond is something that is a bit contrived and unrealistic, I keep placing tiles of hope and she keeps rejecting them as they are not sticking. Now I want to leave the tiles, I want to walk away, get on a plane and marry her brother like the conniving witch I am 🤣

@MamaAlwaysknowsbest I shouldn’t comment. Not really my place…
against my better judgment though, Tilly requires a very handsome and distinguished gentleman with the means to support her fantasy world and with a high tolerance level for drunken antics, tantrums and a complete lack of social awareness in public. Such eligible bachelors are apparently thin on the ground in Surrey. We live in hope though.

I mean, I’m not sure about ‘handsome’ or ‘distinguished’, but based on previous form, BoJo should be available again soon!

Turnbacknowbeforeitstoolate · 14/02/2024 23:29

@AllTheChaos dear god no! The alchemy of so much narcissism and entitlement and delusion ,extreme capitalism and consumerism ,Between the pair of them it’d be a pure dystopian horror of dying children in the streets while they ride along in chariots of gold. The best outcome of this would be a sniper with two bullets and a damned good aim.

But it would be a glorious spectacle despite ushering in a dystopian, possibly even post-apocalyptic world!

Love it! Particularly love the mental image of the damp spaniel who won't answer his phone! 😂
Does he have a furry pocket to keep his phone in?
And what exactly IS the IQ of a Jaffa Cake?
😂😂😂

IloveAslan · 15/02/2024 00:19

People have different senses of humours, and that’s ok!

Of course it's okay. However, the fact that people with a different sense of humour feel they must rush into print to tell us about it, when absolutely no-one has asked (or cares), is baffling.

Turnbacknowbeforeitstoolate · 15/02/2024 02:19

@anicecuppateaandayummyshortbreadbiscuit charlie doesn’t have a phone. He has perfected a gaze though in response to an iPhone tone which resembles ‘here we go’ he fears MIL as much as the rest of us. It’s possible he feigns illness here because he either likes chicken and rice or the safety of a less neurotic environment. Sadly he’s always on limited time, as our cat fucking hates him and will sulk outside until he leaves so I’ve never the chance to properly explore this.
Given he is lactose intolerant and actively seeks dairy I’d say he’s probably as self destructive and fucked up as the rest of the household.

Turnbacknowbeforeitstoolate · 15/02/2024 03:19

@Vergeofbreakdown23 Im literally the worst friend on the planet. Not because I’m an arsehole or I don’t care, the combination of me being profoundly disorganised and in a constant state of hyper stress mode and my profession which means I’m further stressed and borderline psychotic and hallucinating from fatigue because we don’t sleep enough when we’re working … but I genuinely don’t have any friends really, so if you don’t mind being ignored for days and then trauma dumped on on the regs, and texted in the wee hours… inbox me 🤣 are you local? 🤣

I’ve actually tried (with MIL) to bond so hard with my SIL too! She can be lovely and charming and a great conversationalist but it’s hard to get close to her especially as she works so hard including some evenings and weekends that she overcompensates with love and attention for her eldest son. DM and I constantly say we find her cold. We did have a slight breakthrough over Christmas when she visited my parents just before Christmas and I had a lovely few hours with her and her baby including a walk and naice shops browse and coffee and cake but another time she was talking about her work pattern when she returns to work and how she’d have to do it and I just wanted to shake her!

I’ve been over to DB and SIL’s flat pre DC though, stayed the night and in the morning she’s tidying up:decluttering around me as she needs to be doing something! I did say something politely then as it was Saturday morning and I just fancied a relaxing day with them both (the tidying etc wasn’t essential she’s just anal like that).

Yes. Found them in the Co-op!
They are inferior to the OG though. I'd say try and order some barcardi breezers while you're at it but it's impossible to get them into the UK. They have rubbish versions in cans and they are NOT the same.

Ahhh Mitsubishi’s.. the good old days

don’t suppose you went to the emporium did you!?

A) This sounds like a new sitcom (I'm going to watch!)
B) Your storytelling/writing skills are superb and you should be doing a blog!

As I recall and mentioned to OP - we used to call them Mitzi's (Mitsi's). Grin. With the little Mitsubishi logo on them. Pink Callys (Callies?) were always my fave though - think mid to late 90s/00s and predecessor of Callys. Pink Callys were mixed with coke/speed.

@Sauvblanctime this will now send me down a wormhole of googling my old raving/clubbing haunts, the tunes etc!

I did have Speckled and also sure I also knew someone with tattoos of e.g. Doves... Grin

Which club nights were yours, which neck of the woods? Depending on where I was living it was The Gallery Friday nights, Renaissance or Serious or wherever it was on Saturdays at The Cross, also a Friday night was at the Cross but no idea what it was called. Then Sunnyside (?) the Sunday day time whatever it was, can't recall the club. And we went to The Fridge loads, Escape to Samsara and others. And Mass... which was just over the road from The Fridge but at the top of St Matthew's church.

Christ - I literally don't know how I survived with a job - but yes, Mondays were always either sick, show up late or duvet day. I recall walking down to my train station and I have no idea how I got to work - easier in summer as I just slipped on a summer dress and flip flops. And listened to Sand in My Shoes by Dido on my way in on headphones... ahhhh happy days! And Happy Daize - reference to Daisy in Spaced!
