Do you actually care about the environment?

I think a lot of people say they care, but do you really? Have you adjusted your life with wildlife or the climate in mind? Or does convenience come first?

Im genuinely interested in how much the general public truly cares about biodiversity loss, climate change, pollution. Does it bother you or do you just think ‘someone else will deal with it’. I’m not judging, I genuinely want to know how people honestly feel rather than what they say out loud.

I definitely care and try to make decisions with the environment as a priority. Don't have a car, buy second hand, don't eat meat. Have stopped using bleach etc. to clean and try to use natural alternatives. I do have a child though and I do still eat fish and dairy for health and variety. Use cloth nappies too but even the benefit of not sending half a dozen plastic nappies to landfill a day feels offset by the amount of laundry I have to do to clean them.

It's really for my own conscience that I do what I do, and hope to set a good example so my child might make more exo friendly choices in the future. But I feel like it doesn't make one iota of difference when looking at the bigger picture.

Gallowayan · 13/02/2024 21:18

@Jellykat this was not a one off event as you are suggesting. There have been many more. This kind of malevolent disregard and direspect for others does put people off. The upload of a woketard pouring fecal matter over a war memorial was a game changer for me.

Nope, not bothered at all - I only recycle because the normal bin is tiny!

CeriB82 · 13/02/2024 21:22

I recycle, i switch off electric when not in use but that’s for my own pocket.

i find it very unfair that joe bloggs is being fucked over about plastic packaging etc when big companies are getting away with it.

Jellykat · 13/02/2024 21:24

What i'm saying @Gallowayan is we cant stop caring about our children and the future of the planet, simply because a few people take things to the extreme, their actions really arent important in the scheme of things.

Pigglyplaystruant99 · 13/02/2024 18:02

This. It's sad, but I feel like I've done my bit over the years and now I feel like "what's the point". Conversely I still pick up the tiniest worm who's struggling across the pavement and 'save' him by putting him back somewhere he may stand a chance of surviving, and I help spiders ans slugs too. It's not their fault they are born being creatures we don't care about.

Awww 🥹

MindfulGrateful · 13/02/2024 21:33

Yes I do quite a lot. My life just wouldn't be the same without wildlife and I do what I can. Our garden is a wildlife garden. I try to have a low impact lifestyle as much as poss. Vegetarian, no car, walk, bus or cycle most places. Don't spend a lot. I grew up with this lifestyle so that makes it much easier for me, it's my norm.

Will it all be pointless and climate crises/wars etc will happen anyway? Maybe, but it makes me happy to live this way so why change.

1smallhamsterfoot · 13/02/2024 21:33

I don’t care. I’ll be long dead so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Isleoftights · 13/02/2024 21:35

Nobody gives a shit ! Observed today: my yoga class (middle class mums) file out. Nobody turns off (as every week) the lights, and the aircon is on, despite the windows being open ! It's not that they forget - it doesn't even occur to them !! Later; parents (lots of them) sat in cars, looking at their phones waiting to pick up kids from school, all with their engines running. Later still,; do my weekly litter pick, on a section of road I look after; cans, bottles, all thrown from cars. As said, nobody gives a shit !

LovelyTheresa · 13/02/2024 21:36

No. I used to, but not any more. I don't have children, which is me doing my bit as far as I'm concerned: that isn't the reason I don't have children, though. But no, I refuse to not fly on holiday or go vegan or do anything that the hypocritical elites tell us paeons that we need to do while they do whatever the hell they bloody well like.

LovelyTheresa · 13/02/2024 21:43

Ohdeardddddeardear · 13/02/2024 16:40

If you are flying to go on holiday once or twice a year you are not doing everything you can easily. It is the easiest thing in the world to not fly on holiday. Holidays are not essential. It’s one of the things we do that is the most carbon heavy.

Why should people be expected to give up their precious holidays?

mjf981 · 13/02/2024 21:45

I care but feel hopeless. I feel awful for all the poor animals and suffering. Images of birds losing legs due to plastic netting etc horrifies me. And it’s replicated billions of times over.

But I think we’re well on the way to wiping ourselves out with climate change and wars. The sooner the better, so the natural world can start to recover from what we’ve unleashed on it. I’m increasingly convinced remaining child free was the correct decision.

HRTQueen · 13/02/2024 21:45

I do little things but they are easy to fit in my life

I’m too selfish to make huge changes

but it makes me feel better and helps a little to do the little things I do (I think majority of us are the same)

hallaw · 13/02/2024 21:52

I genuinely don't care. My focus is on the immediate needs of myself and my family, and having a good enjoyable life. I will do things that require little effort or which benefit me in other ways, like recycling (it's all collected on doorstep and doesn't need sorting) or turning down heating (financial benefit). But I won't do things like reduce plastic use, use reusable nappies, reduce meat consumption or holidays because it would be an inconvenience. Plus I think that living a city centre life and not having a car gives me enough of a head start that I can be lax about most things and still come out ahead of most other families anyway.

C1N1C · 13/02/2024 21:55

Environment yes, people no

C1N1C · 13/02/2024 21:57

Also, I think it's easy for people to not care if they haven't been to places like Beijing etc.

If someone told you that not littering and using your car would prevent what they have become, I guarantee you'd never buy plastic again and start biking everywhere!

Papyrophile · 13/02/2024 22:01

I think it splits between team history and culture (my tribe) and team nature. IMO, humans/history are infinitely more interesting than geography and wildlife. I like a David Attenbrough documentary as much as anyone else, but I prefer Simon Schama and Mary Beard.

I'm the same. I do feel sad about animals, especially big cats, but what can I do about it? This 'if we all did our bit' mentality is so naive and ignores the reality that ordinary people can do nothing whatsoever unless compelled to by government, and even our government is not so stupid as to think that people will put up with much more in the reduction of living standards.

C1N1C · 13/02/2024 22:10

I love some of the responses...

"I can see the world is f&cked, but I'm going to breed anyway and not do anything to help the environment"

...is basically the same as saying "I'm quite happy halving my kid's life expectancy."

Fine by me :)

Emily1583 · 13/02/2024 22:14

If you get a new phone every contact and jet off on holiday then you're as much responsible for the environment as the next. We all claim to be eco but truth is our habits and luxuries probably mean we are indeed not.

Sausagesinthesky · 13/02/2024 22:15

Honestly? Whilst I am concerned, I don’t believe the apocalyptic rhetoric.

SideBob · 13/02/2024 22:16

If more people started making their own clothes, these fast fashion companies wouldn't be as huge as they are now.

If more people cooked their own food, we wouldn't have massive companies cutting down forests for palm oil. Less plastic overall, too.

If everyone in cities, took public transport, walked or cycled, roads wouldn't be congested, places would be quieter, brighter. More of this infrastructure would be provided to meet demand.

If more people chose to have a front garden instead of paving over with tarmac/resin/insert awful ground covering (or at least had a patch next to their drive) there would be more nature. Places would be more attractive and less depressing - as a lot of uk neighbourhoods are

And on and on.

By refusing to try, you're missing out things you could improve. That's the wrong attitude to have. I want to lead by example and not make excuses because I can't be asked.

Quietchuckle · 13/02/2024 22:19

I care BUT I get very frustrated with the supermarkets and grocery manufacturers using non recyclable packaging. Infuriating. Ditto built
-in obsolescence of just about everything.

we do our best wherever possible.

Ilovemyshed · 13/02/2024 22:24

I do, but it feels hopeless given everywhere else in the world, consumerism and the emerging world.

Also I do believe nature will overcome and adapt and change, or wipe us out and it will all get better.

Ilovemyshed · 13/02/2024 22:29

I'd also love to know how Just Stop Oil plan to actually "just stop oil"?
