To make Welsh Cakes myself

TheShellBeach · 13/02/2024 14:28

I keep buying them from Ebay and the quality is variable.

Some were delivered today which seem to have had the sugar omitted from the recipe altogether. V. disappointing.

I would like to know how to make them myself. Can anyone help with a fool-proof recipe?

Thank you @Poblano those look amazing.

I can't get them at the supermarket because we live in a tiny remote Scottish village, so I have to get them from Ebay.

The effort to reward ratio for making Welsh cakes is definitely in your favour. They're so easy and cheap to make, and homemade are far far superior to shop bought.

Seconding Tan y Castell.

If you can get to Cardiff Market, the Bakestones stall does wonderful traditional and novel Welsh cakes. Bit of a trek from yours, OP.

Oh, and if you get a large order from Tan y Castell online, their Welsh cakes freeze brilliantly.

Tan y Castell have an online shop https://welshcakes.com/shop/

Thank you so much!

I've just placed a large order. Also for the chocolate shortbread.

Mmmmmm.

I am just about the most hopeless baker in the world and I can make Welsh cakes. They really are easy to make. Scones on the other hand ......... (yes, I can make scones, they just aren't great).

My local Coffee#1 does amazing Welshcakes.

I want to make my own too, but you need a griddle?

llareggub · 14/02/2024 00:28

Welsh cakes are very, very simple to make. We are talking toddler level baking!

IMHO they are better when they aren’t fully cooked all the way through. My mother liked them slightly burned.

My local bakery does them with chocolate chips which is an absolute travesty but delicious all the same!

My other favourite is bara brith.

I've never heard of a Welsh cake before (I'm Irish) but they sound great. I'll definitely try making them at the weekend.

Are they more like a fried scone or a fruity pancake or am I way off?

MerchSwyddEfrog · 14/02/2024 00:42

They are like a fried scone.

sounds terrible😂
I remember an auntie who made them

MerchSwyddEfrog · 14/02/2024 00:48

@Gloriosaford No they are delicious, especially warm with a cuppa!

Fried scone - but how you’d cook a potato cake with a smear of butter and not greasy (not fried like bacon and eggs).

Welsh speaker with Irish parents here, I get all the references!

I use the bbc good food recipe regularly.

dottyaboutstripes · 14/02/2024 09:13

They are pretty foolproof to make yourself and so, SO much nicer than shop bought. I just use a frying pan and make sure to burn some because burnt are best 😋❤️

Sundaysunshine21 · 14/02/2024 09:15

I have had success with the BBC good food recipe and can confirm it was quite foolproof (I very rarely bake). I used all butter instead of half lard as I didn’t want to buy lard just for one recipe and it was fine.

I also quite like the M&S Welsh cakes if you can get hold of those.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 14/02/2024 09:18

Yes they are easy to make! Homemade are better, but decent shop-bought ones are still great if you heat them up in a frying pan.

PercyPhelps · 14/02/2024 09:19

You don’t need a griddle, a frying pan is fine.

Welsh cakes are one of the very few things I can make. If I can - anyone can!

I also love these though https://www.fatbottomwelshcakes.com/
