Son ripped his school coat today and I don't have the money right now to pay for a new one 😫

Can this be stitched or not? Because of the material type I'm not exactly sure and don't want to make further damage!

Sorry not the best pic! But the rip is on the shoulder part.

Needle and black should fix it

lingo1234 · 12/02/2024 22:55

@DinnaeFashYersel Won't it rip even further?

Can you pull the two sides of the rip together? As long as he hasn’t actually removed a piece of the fabric, I think you should be able mend it by oversewing it - but I’d try to use a fairly fine needle. Try pulling the edges together first, and then go back and oversew it.

Moier · 12/02/2024 23:02

Oh wish l lived near you. I could mend that easy.. amount of times I've had to mend Grandsons blazer.
You need a fine needle and fine good thread.. and try and blanket stitch it together so it's more like old fashioned " darning " it will strengthen it without ripping more..

ZenNudist · 12/02/2024 23:04

I've mended those types of rip. Either use thread in same colour or invisible mending thread. It won't be perfect but it will be fixed.

lingo1234 · 12/02/2024 23:04

I've never sewed before so don't even know I could do it myself 😞

My local dry cleaners do repairs.

Could that be something you might be able to afford?

Scarletttulips · 12/02/2024 23:07

Thread the needle and tie a knot. See from inside the rip so the knot isn’t visible - I’ll find a video hang on

Sewing and basic mending is an essential skill, especially with small children! There are a lot of helpful videos on YouTube. If you're wary, try it out on an old teatowel or any other old cloth you don't mind using as a tester before you have a go at the jacket.

Think YouTube tutorials are going to be my friend here!

You don't know where she lives! She might be in your road.

If there's anybody near Manchester who is good at sewing please let me know 🤣

Dry Cleaners do repairs.

If I was doing it myself I might put a square of material under the rip to give some extra strength to the repair. If you try to just stitch the two edges together it's likely to fray. But you could sort of stitch the two edges together and stitch to the bit of material too. If that makes sense!

slipperypenguin · 12/02/2024 23:09

Could you post on a local Facebook community page? I bet there will be a few older people who would love the opportunity to help out by sewing it for you

CJ4713 · 12/02/2024 23:11

Try your local nextdoor.com page too and ask on there.

lingo1234 · 12/02/2024 23:12

I may try the dry cleaner. Just reluctant to pay a silly amount when it could be done for much less if I knew how to do it properly myself

OP posts:
parietal · 12/02/2024 23:17

i'd definitely put some fabric under the rip to strengthen it.

If I was being lazy, i'd cut a square of fabric the right size, put glue (Elmers or a similar PVA glue) on half, slip it into the hole and let it dry. then put glue on the other half and join the two halves of the rip together on top. when that has dried, the rip will be 90% fixed and should be hard to see if your fixing fabric is also black.

then add a few stitches in black thread on top to reinforce it.

Scarletttulips · 12/02/2024 23:19

Here

When down - pull and the stitches disappear

Puffer jacket patch repair kit off amazon or elsewhere . Colour match to coat. Works a dream.

Had the same on a childs coat in awkward place. Fabric was fraying and not enough loose to pull back together.

lingo1234 · 13/02/2024 12:26

Dry cleaners says it cannot be repaired 🙄

OP posts:
lndnbrdge91 · 13/02/2024 12:39

Google black iron on mending patch. Amazon do them, it may not look the same as before but should give the coat a bit longer!

Thelnebriati · 13/02/2024 12:40

With that type of fabric I'd fold the edges under, sew a line of stitches along the edge of the tear using blanket stitch, and then put the stitches holding the two edges together outside of those.
