WIBU to still show up to the hospital appointment?

Cockapoosforlife · 12/02/2024 19:48

I have a long term health condition which impacts my life considerably, with a sizeable impact on my vision. I have had a hospital appointment scheduled for a while to review the conditions impact on my eyes and to decide if surgery is necessary, this was to take place tomorrow morning. I have just had notice from my mother who I haven’t lived with for a while that this appointment has been cancelled.

WIBU to still attend as they did not inform me and this is the only time I can do the appointment for a long time?

For context I work in quite a high pressure field with my work scheduled far in advance (think 5 years). It also involves working across multiple countries and time zones, to reschedule would place substantial delays on projects. For the appointment to also not go ahead it poses a considerably high chance of total vision loss, as well as raising the risk of unplanned surgery.

How about calling the hospital? They may have more information than Mumsnet.

OnGoldenPond · 15/02/2024 08:26

You must stop putting your employer ant their projects ahead of your health.

You can rest assured that if you don't get seen and lose your eyesight they will sack you on health incapabiliity grounds without giving it a second thought.

I worked for an employer like this in the past so I know how intimidating they can be so I understand how you feel. However, they are just not worth it. Your health comes first.

Alternatively, you could think about reading the whole thread, or at least all the OP's posts.

It wasn’t an appointment letter, it was a text message. I don’t why it got sent to her as they have my number on file.

I'd ring them and check because it sounds weird they text your mum.

Rottweilermummy · 15/02/2024 10:04

I would ring them up ,for 2 reasons, 1 to explain about your problem whether someone could see you it might be that person you need to see has gone off sick, in which case nothing you can do, other reason for ringing; is to complain about message being sent to your mum, thats very bad practice if they have your number ,

Ginnnny · 15/02/2024 10:06

You should absolutely call the department and ask if the appointment has definitely been cancelled, and make sure they have your details. Very strange they would contact your mum, unless it was an oversight and they got in touch with your emergency contact? It would be pointless turning up if you aren't on their books for the day.

Blushingm · 15/02/2024 10:10

They won't see you if your appointment has been cancelled - you'd be turned away

Actually, they did see her, two days ago!

SoupDragon · 15/02/2024 10:28

I'm beginning to think some posters could do with an eye appointment themselves

Nickinoo22 · 15/02/2024 11:17

I can understand your frustration but late cancellations up to even a couple of hours beforehand isn't that unusual.

In the amount of time you have taken to read/answer these threads you could have just telephoned the hospital and checked why etc . Surely that would be more constructive?
I cannot imagine that they would 'just squeeze you in' if it has been cancelled.....

Yes , I eventually saw that ( far too many responses to read all ) but it still remains that a phone call to the appropriate department in the beginning would have saved the reams of comments .

Except the department was shut and the appointment was the following morning.

All information readily available from the OP's posts.

OH my god the OPs appointment is done and dusted. Some of you are just dumb.

HarrietPoole · 15/02/2024 13:37

No, not dumb. Perfectly able to speak. Do you mean stupid?

This is the total ignorance that people with sight loss face every day 🙄 Do you honestly think people that have sight loss don’t work and just sit at home in the dark claiming benefits?!

And there's your ignorance showing, because I have sight loss myself. It's caused working to be very difficult for me. I suppose there are different levels of sight loss and I was only thinking in terms of my own.

How’s that my ignorance showing?! I work with people with sight loss and have done for 12 years, mostly retired people but also a large number of working age people who work. With today’s technology there’s plenty of options for people with sight loss. I’m sorry you have sight loss yourself but everyone is different and I get infuriated when people assume that someone who has sight loss is unable to do what sighted people can do

Because you assumed I had no idea what I was talking about, when in fact I have first hand experience of sight loss. The OP was saying her sight loss was potentially severe and she had a globe hopping very important sounding job and I wondered how she was managing it with vision issues. I wasn't assuming anything.

User3456 · 15/02/2024 22:34

When you do get to the appointment, wear a decent mask (FFP2 or better) and use an antiviral nasal spray.
Lots of reports of covid infection having additional impact on ocular issues, that's the last thing you need if you are already experiencing deterioration

I did get seen as the message was sent in error. We are now reviewing surgical options as there are a couple of different routes that can be taken. I also found out the text message was sent in error.

That's great news OP.

“How are you even managing to work if you're losing your eyesight?”

but you did assume!! And your question was irrelevant to the post so please don’t try to reverse your ignorance onto me

It’s a one day a week clinic, when I normally get there as the doctor who normally sees me ends up having to get a more senior member of staff due to the nature of the issue at the moment.

I cannot accommodate them as everything regarding my work has been booked and paid for. The clinic only runs one day a week and unfortunately it is the worst day for me to be run on.

I hope your boss gives a shit and pays you well enough to lose your sight for 🤔😏
