WIBU to still show up to the hospital appointment?

Cockapoosforlife · 12/02/2024 19:48

I have a long term health condition which impacts my life considerably, with a sizeable impact on my vision. I have had a hospital appointment scheduled for a while to review the conditions impact on my eyes and to decide if surgery is necessary, this was to take place tomorrow morning. I have just had notice from my mother who I haven’t lived with for a while that this appointment has been cancelled.

WIBU to still attend as they did not inform me and this is the only time I can do the appointment for a long time?

For context I work in quite a high pressure field with my work scheduled far in advance (think 5 years). It also involves working across multiple countries and time zones, to reschedule would place substantial delays on projects. For the appointment to also not go ahead it poses a considerably high chance of total vision loss, as well as raising the risk of unplanned surgery.

With such a high powered job haven’t you got private medical ?

Merlin3189 · 14/02/2024 18:51

Go to your GP, or if urgent to A&E.

My wife recently thought she had injured herself, phoned 911, got an A&E appointment and, though the place was jam-packed, got seen in under an hour, reassured (well, I was!) and advised. Home within three hours of phoning.

Near me there is a private GP who gives immediate appointments for a fee which should be trivial for someone like you. (BTW jobs that require the sort of work you do, usually include full medical assurance care. My brother got really fed up with the frequent medical checks his employer required him to have: they just can't afford to have you unavailable.)

grownuplefthome · 14/02/2024 18:52

You should have telephoned the clinic secretary, the number would have been on your confirmation letter.

Comtesse · 14/02/2024 18:56

Good for you OP! The text message did sound a bit fishy.

Would they have been open at 19:48 to confirm an appointment for the next day? If they are it's unlike any clinic that I've been involved with!

Your appointment has been cancelled. The only up side to turning up, is face-to-face contact with admin staff who are trying to help you and everyone else. Your appointment hasn't been given to someone else. Medical staff involved are either ill, have died or facing family emergencies. Or the premises or equipment are unusable.

Try reading the OPs updates. The appointment, as several of us guessed, wasn't actually cancelled and the OP was seen.

Isinglass20 · 14/02/2024 19:48

Personally I’d go privately if your job is so high powered and presumably well paid and also why isn’t there private health cover for employees? Or why don’t you take out private health insurance. Sight is precious

Peppermintpatty24 · 14/02/2024 19:53

I don't think you are being unreasonable. To cancel an appointment after waiting so long, and literally last minute, is not on. They do it ALL the time. (I work for the NHS). To say they won't see you if you just turn up, is a possibility, but not a definite. We see people in exactly your situation, I including people who mix up the dates, and we always see them. I personally would still turn up, especially given your circumstances. Good luck.

Mumkins42 · 14/02/2024 19:59

No way, don't turn up. They will just turn you away. I have multiple chronic problems and am so used to this sort of thing and a crumbling system. They are very unlikely to have the consultant even in the building. Hope it gets re scheduled soon.

at least make the effort to read the OP's updates!

She was seen. The text was a mistake.

StressedOutButProudMama · 14/02/2024 20:32

If it was me I'd go. Because a text sent to your mum about a cancelled appointment could be for her or could be sent via wrong number etc.
I took had a letter sent to a very old address despite me not being there for 10 years.and previously having letters.sent to my new address no problem. It advised that they'd have to reschedule. The letter was passed over to the neighbours from the new tenant and I was.calked by an old neighbour on day of appointment, they read it out and even sent a photo via messenger. But by then I'd already arrived at the hospital so went in to check. They were totally unaware of the letter and still had my appointment down and said had I not attended it would have gone down as failed to attend. I showed them the letter and they knew nothing about it, weeks later I got a call apologising supposingly some department was trying to tidy up the system a d remove old data, in the process they'd removed my new address instead dog my old one. The appointment list has seemingly been too long and they'd knocked the last 4 patients off it. The issue was they hadn't informed the department so the still had the original list. They did see me thankfully. I'd just go if the journey is not wasting your time. Then if they say it's been cancelled ask them why they didn't notify you and get them to check the details, explain you have travelled for this and took time out I'd work etc chances are they'll see you but it'll be a case of fitting you in between others. If they have your up to date details they should be texting you not your mum.

Abbimae · 14/02/2024 20:35

Why on earth would they see you!

HollyKnight · 14/02/2024 20:38

You'd think people would check the date of a thread, when the topic of that thread is about a specific date, before replying (and making themselves look stupid).

Well they did!!

Read the OP's updates

5YearsLeft · 14/02/2024 21:33

THE OP WAS SEEN. (NOW DISCUSSING HER SURGICAL OPTIONS). TEXT WAS AN ERROR. IT’S OVER. STOP TELLING HER NOT TO GO OR SHE WON’T BE SEEN.

Honestly. You don’t need to RTFT, but ffs, RTFU (read the fucking updates from OP).

EbonyRaven · 14/02/2024 21:40

I am cringing SO HARD at the posters on here who can't be fucked to read the OP's posts. She was seen yesterday (as several others have said.) AND the text was a mistake - her appointment wasn't cancelled.

Sorry for repeating what a few people have already said, but it needs repeating - because SO many people are responding to the OP's first post, and clearly not reading anything else.

It was 2 days ago. Do these people not think the situation has moved on?! For fuck's sake! 😂

Overnightoats1 · 14/02/2024 21:50

Responded too quickly

EbonyRaven · 14/02/2024 21:53

I do but it doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. I was seen anyways as the cancellation text was a mistake.

I do, it doesn’t cover this however as this is a very old pre-existing condition.

i think I actually have a medical through work soon, my other half works for the same employer and had his today. I have found private GP’s to be a god send when needing an urgent appointment however.

If your appointment has been cancelled, it's been cancelled you can't turn up & expect to be seen. Many appointments are being cancelled due to the doctors going on strike, it's not just you.

Miisty · 15/02/2024 07:00

I get phone calls now or texts about appointments as Royal Mail in Yeovil is stocking up appointments My husband luckily had a phone call about removal of a mole the actual letter turned up 3days late Also if you fail to attend they often put you to the back of the list

How are you even managing to work if you're losing your eyesight?

This is the total ignorance that people with sight loss face every day 🙄 Do you honestly think people that have sight loss don’t work and just sit at home in the dark claiming benefits?!
