I’m sure I’ll be told I am and that I should be grateful for people being nice. At the train station and train is delayed and I’m on WhatsApp to keep DH updated. In between WhatsApps I’m just holding my phone in my hand. A random woman has told me twice to put my phone in my bag. AIBU to be finding this really irritating?

Why on earth has she told you to do that, it's none of her business what you do with your phone?

AthenaMinerva · 12/02/2024 18:55

What? Is she worried about it being stolen or lost?

Ihaterhymingrabbit · 12/02/2024 18:55

Why is that being nice? Does she think you’ll be robbed?

Popandcrisps · 12/02/2024 18:56

I think she thinks I’ll be mugged or something but it’s really getting on my nerves. I’ve come into a shop to hide from her 😂

I don't understand why you think she's being nice?

Surely it's none of her bloody business what you do with your phone.

soupfiend · 12/02/2024 18:57

Most people carry their phones in their hand (I dont) so is she saying this to almost all the people on the platform?

Popandcrisps · 12/02/2024 18:58

Well I agree and was tempted to say this to her. She’s showing concern that I will have it stolen, I think.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 12/02/2024 19:00

No, that's really weird of her to say...
If she was worried about being robbed she could say "there's been a few thefts recently with phones snatched from hands so be careful" but telling you to put your phone away with no explanation is just rude

HateItWhenABitchLetsHimselfSlide · 12/02/2024 19:01

The correct response here would be "ODFOD".

HollyBollyBooBoo · 12/02/2024 19:07

How could you resist not asking her 'why?'!

sprigatito · 12/02/2024 19:08

"Thank you, I heard you the first time" - hard stare followed by no further eye contact.

This.

Honestly, it seems like 3/4 of threads on here lately make me wonder why people don't ask simple questions.

doitwithlove · 12/02/2024 19:13

I would have replied "my phone is kept in my bra, never in my bag" 🤣🤣

Kazzyhoward · 12/02/2024 19:14

Perhaps she's seen someone suspicious looking at you and appearing to be ready to nick it from you? She may be trying to warn you without actually coming out and saying you're being scoped out for being robbed!

Mummyofthewildones · 12/02/2024 19:15

Maybe she's planning on nicking it herself!
Or she's recently had hers nicked and is trying to do you a favour. Either way it's obviously to stop you having it stolen.

slashlover · 12/02/2024 19:16

Do you have sound on or are the buttons making the clicky noise while you type on Whatsapp? (A woman on my morning bus types with the clicky noise on and it drives me round the bend.)

angelikacpickles · 12/02/2024 19:17

YANBU, I hate this well-meaning busybody nonsense. Assuming you are a grown adult, I'm sure you are perfectly capable of assessing the risk involved in holding your phone in your hand without input from anyone else.

NewName24 · 12/02/2024 19:18

LizFromMotherland · 12/02/2024 19:10

This.

Me too.

I mean, why didn't you just say "Why?" ?

stcrispinsday · 12/02/2024 19:19

"Mind your own business" is what I'd be saying to her.

I have a rucksack where the front pocket zip is jammed open. Consequently I never put anything in there but I do still use the bag. The number of people who tap me on the shoulder to tell me my bag is open is infuriating. I have to remind myself that they each think they're being helpful, they're not conspiring to annoy me 😁

That sort of thing annoys me too.

As to why didn’t I ask why - because I don’t care why. I had no intention of putting my phone away.

I would find that really irritating. The best way to stop it is a polite but firm response that closes the interaction so that she stops saying it. Something like "I am fine, thank you" or "I am not worried about theft thank you".

Only dafties fart out doo-doos?

@HateItWhenABitchLetsHimselfSlide please put me out of my misery - what does ODFOD mean?

Popandcrisps · 12/02/2024 21:06

Oh do fuck off dear
