Arrrrggghh I’ve f**led up - concert tickets

Ok, so I KNOW I’ve been unreasonable… a lady was selling Taylor swift concert tickets on a local Facebook selling page. I said I would like to buy 2 for me and my teen DD. Before I transferred £400, I wanted to make sure this person was legit - I have been scammed a few years ago and am very weary to transfer money online. Her Facebook profile was quite open and I could see her entire friends list. We had no friends in common, but a few of her friends are friends with mine. All of her friends are from where we live, lots of comments and photos etc. definitely looked legit.

My 2 fuck ups-

  1. I TOLD her in a message that I checked she was ‘real’ as I’ve been scammed before. I told her I checked her profile and she has friends in common with a few of mine… I had taken my time to do this and reply so was being honest with her. But why oh why did I do that?! As now she’s blocked me. I can see why, I’ve got her back up haven’t I. Made it look like I’ve been spying on her (which I had really… my next fuck up is, I TOLD teen DD I managed to get us tickets… she’s now over the moon with excitement and making concert bracelets in her room listening to Taylor swift albums.

I can’t apologise to the lady, or make her unblock me. I’ve been difficult and weird with her, and she probably thinks it’s less hassle to sell to someone else instead. I feel so pissed off with myself. How do I tell my DD I’ve fucked up?! Or WHERE can I find legit tickets for Wembley asap.

so I know I’m BU but would you do the same as the seller in her shoes ? Is it worth me trying to apologise somehow?

Use this as a teaching opportunity. Talk her through exactly what happened.

Her tickets cannot be resold. Ticketmaster are buying them back and selling them, so anyone with tickets who wants rid doesn’t need to sell through facebook and you wouldn’t be able to use them anyway. Why are you trying to buy tickets from Facebook when the Taylor swift tour has been really bloody clear that you cannot transfer tickets like that so you can’t use them.

This is what I'd tell the bairn. You can't transfer tickets so it's back to the drawing board

Freeasabird76 · 12/02/2024 20:16

My daughter was scammed last week by a legit looking profile selling tickets for the Cardiff concert, both daughters were very excited when they thought they'd finally get to go 😟

kaiadeluded · 12/02/2024 20:16

I'd like to know how so many FB profiles get hacked?

gamerchick · 12/02/2024 20:18

Because people play those stupid games. See what you look like as a vampire and other crap. They also join in threads on what was your first car and other password questions.

I'd like to know how so many FB profiles get hacked?

People use simple passwords
Or the same password for everything
Or play those silly OMG! games about what will happen to you next year or what you were in a past life etc.
Or click on silly links and fill out their details on any old website.

Unfortunately, lots of people do silly things online and don't realise the consequences.

SummaLuvin · 12/02/2024 20:24

Said this on another thread but worth repeating.

As it stands with tickets purchased on Ticketmaster it is not possible to send someone tickets, this functionality will be available closer to the time I believe. So if someone says they will be sending you tickets imminently then it's a massive red flag.

This is how the tickets appear in my account, as you can see transfer is not available and the barcodes will not be functional until 3 days before. The "Sell" button will upload them to the general resale platform, not allow to to choose a specific individual. Not sure how it works with AXS, but I think it's similar. The fact of the matter is that demand hugely outstrips supply for the Eras Tour, there is no easy way to safely get tickets because it is sold-out and many fans are obsessively refreshing the resale site in hopes of snapping up the few tickets being returned.

Arrrrggghh I’ve f**led up - concert tickets
Hijinks75 · 12/02/2024 20:27

Good that you’ve found it was a scam, Facebook actually doesn’t allow people to sell tickets on its site so it should be a cause to worry anyway. Nothing to do with tickets, but DW recently sold a child’s bed through Facebook, one buyer asked if they could pay via PayPal, DW sent my email but it rang immediate alarms as it was only £15, I checked the profile, the person lived in France so clearly cloned, but they tried to get DW to send back £50 that they had to allegedly pay to upgrade our PayPal account, reported to PayPal and facebook and changed all passwords but it’s a,ways worth checking, a legitimate seller won’t mind

DiscoBeat · 12/02/2024 20:30

I had exactly this. My FB account was hacked and I got some of my friends 'friended' by the hacker. A couple of my friends were interested in the tickets being apparently offered but they checked by asking the seller things they'd only know if they really knew me. I hope you haven't been scammed but it really sounds bad, I'm afraid.

BobnLen · 12/02/2024 20:38

I wouldn't use facebook for anything like this, it will be a scam

Elphamouche · 12/02/2024 21:01

PLEASE only buy tickets through a legitimate resale site. And NOT Viagogo either.

I work in theatre, I deal with this on a weekly basis, people are loosing a lot of money and even when they get tickets, they’ve been resold hundreds of times and they all get turned away.

toastofthetown · 12/02/2024 21:11

I have tickets for Eras, and I could get rid of them three times over just with people who have told me straight up they'd want to be my first reserve. I would assume anyone selling to friends of friends would be scamming because the demand is so high, that there's no need to cast the net so widely to get rid of unwanted tickets. Your only guarantee of not being scammed is the official resale site, and hoping you're lucky, or buying from a trusted friend.

Lilysienna1 · 12/02/2024 21:16

Have now spoke to DD and she’s been very mature about it all and far kinder to me than I deserve. Although she did say, if I had actually told her how I was getting these tickets, she would have said right away that it was a scam (all I had said was that I was getting the tickets but not how) I’ve said we can try nearer the time through ticket master but realistically it’s better to assume we won’t be successful, rather than get hopes up too high.

She is a scammer. The reason she’s blocked you is because she thinks you’ll check. Don’t buy concert tickets on marketplace.

What a sweet girl you have. As unfortunate as this has been, seeing it almost happen in real life is a good lesson for her. I hope you're able to get tickets soon.

shoppingshamed · 12/02/2024 21:22

Little tip - everyone selling Taylor Swift tickets on Facebook is a scammer

RadiatorHead · 12/02/2024 21:24

I think you did exactly the right thing. If she was legit she wouldn’t have had a problem with you checking up on her. I know I wouldn’t have had any issue with it if you checked me out. I think you had a very lucky escape there OP. Sorry your DD is upset though.

iOoOOoOi · 12/02/2024 21:27

Lucky escape there OP.

I bet every single Taylor Swift ticket seller on Facebook is a scammer. Why would any genuine seller try and sell there ticket on Facebook. They could sell them legitimately on ticket master or could offer them to friends or family.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/02/2024 06:42

If she was legit she wouldn't care you did that. She's either a scammer using her own profile (idiot) or using a fake one and got spooked. She thought you'd check with mutual friends or something probably.
Lucky escape. Your daughter will be upset but it's better than losing money and letting her down on the day if the tickets were fake/ didn't turn up.

Netaporter · 13/02/2024 06:57

@Lilysienna1 only yesterday did I notice someone on my local FB page selling 4 Taylor Swift tickets block 108 at ‘face value’ of £200. Obviously the tickets for that block were way in excess of £200 and I was tempted without thinking… but I did click on the profile and considered why ‘Susan’ who looked legit would even have 4 TS tickets when her main hobby seemed to be going to garden centres…then I also thought, they can’t be transferred either. Loads of ‘I’ll have them please’ comments tho. Poor old Susan had been hacked (I guess from giving all of her details to see what her Viking name was in a past life/whatever)…

I reckon there was a coordinated plan yesterday by gangs to duplicate the same thing across loads of local FB pages. Unless we all live in the same area…!

TempleOfBloom · 13/02/2024 07:24

OP, I am really glad you dodged this bullet.

But raise your alert status. Why would someone block you for noticing mutual friends? Everyone does that on Facebook etc. It’s not your fault if someone reacts badly to normal due diligence, look how you were trying to apologise to her! People need to earn your trust!

Hoping you get the tickets by a legit route: good luck!

How did she manage to be successful? Just checking ticket master all the time? I check several times a day but so far have had no luck at all and I chech all UK and Ireland dates. Unfortunately my daughter decided she was Taylor Swift obsessed after the registration codes was done.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote - DD was successful at several venues in the original pre-sale, largely because she approached it like a military campaign and did a lot of strategic planning. She snagged the Edinburgh tickets relatively early on as the venues were being released over a few weeks, then some time later got tickets at a closer venue (but couldn’t have known that would work at the time of the Edinburgh purchase). For a while she was going to transfer the Edinburgh tickets to a good friend, who then couldn’t go (no cheap flights or accommodation left!). That was when she sold back to Ticketmaster, because it would have been stupid to attempt a sale or transfer to someone she didn’t know. She said it took two weeks for the money to be returned (ie not too bad) and it came back to the penny of what she’d paid.
My main point was that tickets are being returned all the time for such reasons, so it’s worth trying via Ticketmaster for official resales.
