To ask why do people not working claiming FSM get this for free?

Sprinkledusting · 10/02/2024 22:52

I’ve just discovered if you claim FSM and even if you’re not working, you can send your child to morning/after school club for free. And not just in our school either.
There are also sports clubs and holiday clubs during school holidays that state they are free for those who claim FSM. To claim free school meals your income has to be so low that you’re not working full time or not working at all, which of the people I know, most are not.
But those who are working have to pay for breakfast club/holiday clubs.

Can someone explain to me the logic behind this? As I simply don’t understand it.

Lovely to be skirting with eugenics on a Sunday afternoon...

Good idea, if you can’t afford to raise your existing children then you shouldn’t have any more … simple.

Should that go for men as well who don't pay maintenance? My dad had 5 kids with 4 different women and didn't pay a single penny for any of them.

Yes absolutely. Don’t pay your CMS or are found to be hiding assets to avoid paying, same thing. Why should their existing kids miss out because they get somebody else pregnant?

So won't those on the £7.5k also get UC making it up to at least £1400 - does that amount include rent or just living costs? That £1400 is the equiv of a £19k salary btw. Someone one earning £7.5k must be working part time as £19k is annual full time minimum wage.

That £1400 is to cover everything.
Rent, usually a portion of council tax (mine is still almost £100 pcm), gas, electricity, water etc.

I've never been given free or reduced uniform like people claim you can get. We could use the PP money to fund 1 residential trip over the 5 years of secondary. But that was all. DS1 didn't go on his residental, but the money wasn't then allowed to be used for other trips. I had to pay for those if he wanted to go.

Now I'm not moaning about what we got, it was very helpful at the time. But a lot of things people state benefit claimants get just isn't true.

It’s because a number of children in receipt of the Pupil Premium/FSM would otherwise not have a breakfast and their only hot meal of the day is the one they’ll have at school. It’s not about free fucking child care.

I cannot believe my eyes at some of the replies here: jealousy of the families of these children. For shame.

Not jealousy of neglected children, frustration that we as a society enable children to be born only to be neglected and make it easy for the parents to continue to do this.

"enable children to be born only to be neglected and make it easy for the parents to continue to do this."

Continue to do what? Try and make the best of a crap situation.. or is the usual "Oh i don't mean YOU" in regards to the disabled carers?

So let’s prevent the crap situation as per my earlier suggestion. Children being starved, beaten and abused means more to me than some notion about bodily autonomy. After all it would still be a choice wouldn’t it.

same. Our local secondary school now offers free breakfast - porridge/toast nothing fancy- from 7.30am for any kid who wants to come in. They also run free extra curricular clubs from 7.30am to 5pm for any child - 100 of them.

The kids who need to get out of their home for whatever reason, or are in low income,
can choose to come but so can any child. Provision like this should be standard, and it takes away some of the socio-economic divisions too, all kids are treated the same at school.

I do feel jealous, because I'm rushing to work every morning dropping dc off at breakfast club, which I get billed for monthly, and recently found out if you get FSN you also get this free 🤯🤯

I understand how you feel but try not to feel jealous. Children on FSM are in very, very poor households, with little opportunity. That they can attend activities for free means they can attend when they wouldn't otherwise be able to - imagine a family where pouring out a bowl of cereal is too much for the parent(s). You can afford to pay and that (and the taxes we pay) supports the children who do not have the advantages ours have - to the benefit of us all. It's to help the children, not the parents.

I'd love to know how to prevent my child being disabled.. i mean, what's the miracle cure there Einstein?

Lighrbulbmo · 11/02/2024 13:10

you are being silly to get so worked up by it, life is not fair, haven’t you realized that yet.

IClaudine · 11/02/2024 13:11

So all benefit claimants abuse their children@Naptrappedmummy? And non benefit claimants never do so?

You say you hate the Tories. Is that because they are too left wing for you?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 11/02/2024 13:11

It’s for routine and stability. Both of which lead to better outcomes for the children. I also imagine one could also talk about the safe guarding aspect of having trusted adults overseeing the children.

I'm not sure whether this applies across the UK, however in my local authority, these are the earnings limits to qualify for FSM:

Universal Credit with a household income of less than £7,400 per year after tax and not including any benefit you receive
Child Tax Credit, provided you are not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190

That really doesn't sound like a life to be jealous of.

Thank you for sharing this, it's a disgusting low amount. Anyone who has luxuries etc and receives FSM is obviously fiddling the system.
I do feel sorry for you OP, you're obviously in the awful bracket of earning a bit too much and suffering for it.

Sounds good. I do notice at our primary that they get offered fruit as a snack fairly often.

Probably in a mood because they want the VAT on private schools where she is sending her darlings.

"anyone who has luxuries... ... is fiddling the system"

Or, you know, living on credit or the benevolence of family and friends buying them nice gifts.

Every 'luxury' i have is a gift from parents who thankfully help support me and my kids.

mumedu · 11/02/2024 13:15

In my school, this would be to support vulnerable children, who would otherwise be hanging out on the streets and be at risk of grooming/ gangs. It's not something to be envious of.

YuleDragon · 11/02/2024 13:17

Still waiting for @Naptrappedmummy to tell me how i ought to cure my sons disability, and my own, so i can come off carers allowance, and benefits, and get a job, so i can stop neglecting my kids.

I mean, if you have a mortgage yes. If you pay rent then you'd get housing benefit and probably get your rent and council tax sorted (situation dependent).

No that's rent included.
£875.00 of that is rent toward the £1200 we pay (£200 less than many similarly sized houses in our area- size appropriate for us, a regular 3 bed house)
Also entitledto says we would get about 60% of our council tax paid, not all.

Its not as rosy as people seemingly think.
