Or is there a serious lack of full fat crème fraiche in the shops

WTAF? Since last weekend I’ve been in various different shops (M&S, WR and Co-op) and there is only half fat crème fraiche in all - no full fat.

is there a national shortage or something?!

what bloody use is the half fat stuff?!

Plenty in Aldi not 3 hours ago (full fat and reduced fat)....

No Aldi (or Lidl) here either! We only have co-op, WR and M&S

its v annoying. Mascarpone?

BreakfastAtMimis · 09/02/2024 18:32

I don't think I've ever bought creme fraiche in my life. Full or reduced fat.

JuJuHeyHey · 09/02/2024 18:45

@CremeFraicheEnthusiast I'm sure it'd be fine as a sub, but I recommend Nigella's carbonara recipe - no cream needed, just eggs and Parmesan (plus black pepper and nutmeg if you like it). More authentic, apparently.

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 09/02/2024 19:33

It's an international shortage - cannot get any in my local supermarket in France either!

You're missing out. It's so good in burritos.

Zanatdy · 09/02/2024 19:37

I noticed too. I only ever use it to make carbonara, and only when DS is home from Uni. It’s a nice easy dinner

Yes I do want to try the proper way. Maybe I will take this opportunity

I mean, if I can get any frigging eggs given they also sell out as it’s almost pancake day!

CremeFraicheEnthusiast, I feel your pain. My pastry making was for years based on Lard, and in order to be healthier I thought I'd use instead reduced fat or even fat free lard. But can you find it anywhere ? Most supermarkets don't even stock it and when I do get into discussion with the people that work in supermarkets the conversation only degenerates into mudslinging, name calling and possibilities of being banned from the supermarket and threats to burn the supermarket down. Silly stuff and all over low fat lard. Pah, This country!

Willmafrockfit · 09/02/2024 20:04

i always buy half fat

BrandNewBicep · 09/02/2024 20:08

Plenty in my local Tesco (and my fridge).

One has not noticed this. One is more concerned about the health of one's monarch.

Actually genuinely loled at this after a difficult and stressful day. So thank you 😂😂

10ThousandSpoons · 09/02/2024 20:15

Lidl has shit loads

It's amazing in burritos

minipie · 09/02/2024 20:18

That Isigny St Mere stuff pictured upthread is THE BOMB

It’s about twice as thick as other full fat creme fraiche. You can stand your spoon up in it. Honestly it’s bloody amazing. I have no idea of the fat % and I don’t want to know.

And yes it is amazing in fajitas, burritos, in soup, with a slice of cake or a fruit tart, in an omelette, a savoury pancake, or just on its own…

The only thing it doesn’t go in is carbonara, you heathen 😆 that’s egg only

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 09/02/2024 20:18

This has been driving me mad for ages (I cook a lot with it). I learnt the hard way that recipies like quiche do not work with substitutions of a different fat content - as well as tasting different they don't set properly

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 09/02/2024 20:19

Aldi is a small shop that generally has the full fat version

Flamingosarentreal · 09/02/2024 21:18

Waitrose didnt have any at the weekend. The checkout assistant told me they hadnt had it on their cold order but didn't know why.

goneaway2 · 09/02/2024 21:49

MadamVastra · 09/02/2024 18:15

Ocado has loads!

I've not had that Isigny one before. Does anyone know if its any good?

soupfiend · 09/02/2024 22:00

Its next to impossible to find full fat cottage cheese so I can believe it

Nearly all cottage is low or no fat

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 09/02/2024 22:02

Terrible for your arteries. Be thankful op

indigoemerald · 09/02/2024 22:10

I spotted lots of Longley Farm crème fraiche in our local greengrocers/wholefoods shops this week! Weirdly, I can’t buy buttermilk from any supermarkets near me, and the tiny wholefoods shop is the only place I’ve been able to find any.

Definitely worth looking away from supermarkets to see what local businesses have in stock!

SallyWD · 09/02/2024 22:15

I haven't been able to get any creme fraiche, whether full fat or half fat
