Name changed for obvious slobby reasons.

For a long time I have been suffering from anxiety and depression and other members of my family are physically unwell/ disabled so the house for a while wasn't the cleanest.

Over the last few months I've been increasing how much I've been doing. Firstly the front room every few days, then the whole kitchen and front room, i cleaned the whole conservatory top to bottom over a vast number of days as it had become a junk room essentially.

My point is whilst I know this is a slovenly question I am an improving sloven(?) But the one room I've always tried to avoid is the bathroom just because the thought of the germs disgusts me, and others have cleaned it non routinely but I'd like to add it to make it regularly cleaned as hopefully after the first time it won't be so bad.

Its mostly the toilet im concerned about. In the house we have Dettol bathroom cleaner and Harpic. Do I use the Dettol spray on the outside of the toilet and Harpic inside? Or the dettol spray inside and out and then Harpic? I believe I can use the dettol spray for the bath, sink and tiles?

I always thought shower curtains were a bit naff as well, but I hated climbing in behind my DD glass screen, bloody dangerous, you had to get soaked putting the shower on , leaning into the spray. Had to get up on a step stool to clean it. Fil walking in, don't you have a lock 😂. No, don't want a bin in there. Recycling, nah, wash stuff straight out, put it in the respective bins. That's why folk get snowed under. I was brought up " don't leave till tomorrow, what you can do today".

If you can, hoover the room before the actual cleaning. It stops spreading hair and dust around. Those are things I have issues with when cleaning so I use paper towels to wipe up after spraying the floor so I can throw them away. If I hoover first I'll use a cloth, usually an old item of clothing cut up to make them, and then wash afterwards. I'm trying to cut down my paper towel use as they are expensive and not great environmentally.
For the inside of the loo I use a spray I make from Nancy Birtwhistle called magic spray. It really does remove limescale and makes the inside sparkling clean plus it's kind to waterlife. It's also really good for limescale on taps and showers. I use it on my kitchen sink as well. I use Method lavender cleaning spray over everything else like the basin, bath, shower and floor and the outside of the loo. I also like using Flash Spray Wipe done sprays as they smell nice and work well.
Work from top down, so clean the floor last otherwise you are going over areas more than once.

Shower curtains! Bloody hell can you still buy them? Memories of kids leaving them on the wrong side of the bath, mouldy around the bottom and them clinging to you like a woolly cosi

Not one person here has mentioned cleaning the shower trap. I do this weekly - remove the cover, take off any hair/ gunk, put in bin then scrub all parts with bathroom cleaner and a narrow scrubbing brush. Honestly, mine’s minging if I miss a week, and there’s only two of us using it. Maybe we’re super grubby or I’m too particular?

I use loo roll to clean the seat and outside surfaces. Harpic down the loo, close the lid, spray and wipe with loo roll, then flush the paper away.
Use your detol spray and a cloth for your other surfaces.

Never even heard of a shower trap. I clean my drains regularly but don’t pull anything apart, I don’t think it’s even possible with my main shower, I have a toe touch drain cover that just slips off and no screws or anything to get to the shower trap.

Notaflippinclue · 09/02/2024 22:05

It's not the trap - that's a bend it's usually just a sleeve you pull out and it traps the hair and gunk that will eventually block - look on't tinternet 'hair in shower trap' it's disgusting

Agreed, family term used inappropriately!

Wow thank you for all the messages I read the replies before I fell asleep and expected the thread to have been too far down to get more replies.

I did it! ...kind of

The main issue was the toilet so I found some yellow rubber gloves and I used Harpic on the toilet inside let it sit for a while. I scrubbed with one of the kitchen pad things around the bowl and tried to get some of the dirt from on the bowl from under the toilet seat, flushed.

I am very wary of chemicals I'm not used to so I flushed multiple times and because I did a bit of the top I used a jub just to run some water over the top.

I then took all the stuff off the window seal, sprayed the dettol on the sink and bath inside and out, the window seal and taps had a new cloth to rub that all down with and then sprayed it with the shower hose.

There's just something about the toilet that I find gross even though it's being cleaned so I had another cloth to use the multi purpose on the seat, outside of the toilet, and Cistern.

I had to do something else quickly and I felt quite gross not being able to shower before doing it, but I came back and noticed that there was still some skidmarks kind of at the bottom of the toilet but around the bend so still visible so I tried more harpic and I didn't get to it using a toilet brush. So I think I'm gonna need either a new better one or to do it with my brush and gloves which I'm not too fond of thinking about.

I also sprayed the multi purpose around the tiled walls.

I also redid some of the shower and came up to mop the floor when I cleaned the kitchen. I'm keeping the toilet cloth and pad and the "other" cloth in separate bags so I know which is which.

But I forgot about the handrails and the shower curtain/ glass so I need to do them and I don't think I can get to the trap thing as the bottom of my bath is hidden by a board that's got sealant around it.

But still it's been nice progress! I don't feel gross every time I come in here now and I've jumped the mental hurdle of doing it which was putting me off so I can do it again and not be so grossed out and I won't as it'll be more regular. I'm glad as it basically means every few days I can clean all the communal areas and my bedroom which makes me feel less down and I think those around me.

Thank you again everyone🙂

You are doing great!
You might start to notice how dirty other people's bathrooms are now I am afraid :D

TheSandgroper · 10/02/2024 05:54

To get to the bottom of the toilet, you can use a cup to scoop water out and scrub a dry base. Flushing the toilet at the end will fill the bowl again.

Or you can chuck some bicarb down and let it settle. I would say overnight but someone is bound to use it so perhaps a day when everyone is out will work for you. Scrub as normal when you come home and flush.

This toilet brush https://groceries.asda.com/product/toilet/george-home-grey-toilet-brush/1000383147861 also goes under the rim for you.

I have a skewer that I bent the end over with pliers that I can put down plugholes to pull out hair and gunk. It's amazing how much gets trapped there! (We don't have a separate shower so it's the bath pluhole that gets yukky)

TomeTome · 10/02/2024 11:15

Leave the toilet cleaner in over night for a couple of nights and it will shift it. Wow brilliant progress
