To ask how to clean the bathroom.

Name changed for obvious slobby reasons.

For a long time I have been suffering from anxiety and depression and other members of my family are physically unwell/ disabled so the house for a while wasn't the cleanest.

Over the last few months I've been increasing how much I've been doing. Firstly the front room every few days, then the whole kitchen and front room, i cleaned the whole conservatory top to bottom over a vast number of days as it had become a junk room essentially.

My point is whilst I know this is a slovenly question I am an improving sloven(?) But the one room I've always tried to avoid is the bathroom just because the thought of the germs disgusts me, and others have cleaned it non routinely but I'd like to add it to make it regularly cleaned as hopefully after the first time it won't be so bad.

Its mostly the toilet im concerned about. In the house we have Dettol bathroom cleaner and Harpic. Do I use the Dettol spray on the outside of the toilet and Harpic inside? Or the dettol spray inside and out and then Harpic? I believe I can use the dettol spray for the bath, sink and tiles?

This is almost competitive.
It is great OP is doing it and that is enough. And, TBH, when I travel a week or two away from home, my OH does not bother and it is not the end of the world.

HandSelectedBy898 · 09/02/2024 08:16

Just be very careful op mixing cleaning products together as some people are doing on this thread.

  • do not mix chemical products - it’s dangerous to mix together common household cleaners as they can form a highly toxic gas, for example chlorine bleach and ammonia

Wear gloves and open the bathroom window.

Btw if you find bathroom cleaning hard then just clean one element a day eg loo on Mons, shower on Tues, surfaces on Weds, floor on Thurs, wash all towels and bath mats Sat.

Good luck!

Laiste · 09/02/2024 08:23

Strangely enjoying reading everyone's different routines!

I take shower curtain down and chuck it in the wash with the bath mat. (i do towels separately)

Hoover up fluff and dust and any corner cobwebs.

Rubber gloves on!

Squirt jiff all up the tiled wall round the bath and in the bath and clean all that with a cloth/sponge using good hot water. Rinse with shower head.

I clean the lid of the bin and the lid of the box (box to sit on and keep loorolls in) in the shower and rinse them.

Different cloth. (red) Clean the loo with jiff - lid, seat, under seat, then rim of loo, then outside body of loo. Then use loo brush to clean IN loo with more jiff. Flush. Finish with good squirt of bleach and leave it. Lid down.

Then clean the sink with more jiff ! Rinse.

Mop floor.
When it's dry put down clean fluffy mat and put clean shower curtain back up, clean towels, and it all smells lovely 😃

Oh i wipe the window ledge and water the plant there too.

Laiste · 09/02/2024 08:24

I do this weekly by the way. I make a fuss about having to do it, but once it's under way i quite like it and it takes 20 mins max.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 09/02/2024 08:32

Lots of great suggestions. I like to put blu-loo in my cistern so it gives a bit of a clean every flush. I also use diluted zoflora in the bathroom as I like the smell better.

eilaka · 09/02/2024 08:55

If toilet really bad, stick the entire bottle of harpic down it, leave for one hour (removes limescale and disinfects), then use toilet brush vigorously. Flush and repeat brushing. Maybe 3 times. That will clean a filthy toilet.

Nazzywish · 09/02/2024 09:06

All what previous posters have said but I'd also add once you've done the deep cleans just dona little every day in one room.that means every room gets something done every week and it doesn't all build up to the point where u need to spend hours cleaning stuff out. It really helps. Or every time you go into a room just do one thing like tidy something away and it's more manageable

Huhyou · 09/02/2024 09:18

We just put in a new bathroom. Any idea how to keep the shower glass clean? We live in very hard water area. I’m bleaching and karchering it weekly at this rate. I try to get the kids to wipe down after each use but not really happening to a good enough standard.

Nannyfannybanny · 09/02/2024 09:21

People "hoover" the bathroom floor.!! There was a post on here a couple of months ago, someone asked how often do you clean the bathroom, replies were staggering. DH gets up early, I clean as soon as I get out of the shower. Toilet seat is removable, lay it in the bath, clean method or Lidl own. Wipe all round outside of toilet with same, yes one of those sponge things. Basin, and work surfaces, bath cleaned. It's completely tiled,so a battery window cleaner, which I also use on the mirror door wall cupboard. I hang the bathmat and the anti slip mat on the side of the bath. We're at home, one toilet,so it gets cleaned regularly, several times a day, with a toilet brush. Under the rim isn't enameled,so stains. Weekly, I don disposable gloves, clean with descale spray. Remove plants from window sill ,wipe sill, frame, tall towel rail .micro fibre cloth. Remove wash bin ,towels, flannel . Sweep floor and wash (flash power mop) when it's dry,bin back, Clean towels. Takes minutes. Apart from yesterday...dog got thick mud,had to give her a bath!!

Laiste · 09/02/2024 09:21

Nazzywish i agree.
In my head i have this thing where i try to leave a room better than when i was in it. It takes 10 seconds to do one thing.

Even if it's just take the cups out with me to put in the sink, or grab a bit of rubbish the kids have left. Or quickly fold the throws and leave them nicely before i walk out. It sounds pathetic written down but when i go back into the living room at some point to chill out its nice if it looks half decent, and not just like everybody just fucked off and left everything.

Family roll their eyes when i say never go upstairs empty handed. It's a waste! There's always something lurking in the hall which could go up. A coat, a bag, a pile of games, some laundry in a basket. Don't walk past it grab it as you go up, even if it only makes it as far as the landing!!

Just little things like this - keep the house looking nice on the surface at least 😂

HandSelectedBy898 · 09/02/2024 09:21

Oh yes forgot to mention different cloths and sponges etc

I go with blue for loo and pink for for sink

Laiste · 09/02/2024 09:24

@Huhyou you can buy ''Shower spray''. Your meant to simply mist the glass over (even while it's still wet) after you get out, and leave it and it stops lime build up. No need to wipe it down.

Good luck training the kids though ...

DRS1970 · 09/02/2024 09:28

Pleased you felt able to ask, rather than suffering in silence. Harpic is really for inside the pan. I will often put on a generous amount, and clean the rest of the bathroom, before revisiting and agitating on the pan surface and under the water line with a brush. Dettol is really for diluting and wiping your surfaces - worktops, toilet lids, shelves... - although you can use it in more places if you wanted. White vinegar solution is good for timescale build ups and that pink biofilm you can get in wet areas, although you could put it on neat in smaller areas like tap spouts. GL and keep up the good work. 👍

TheSandgroper · 09/02/2024 09:31

Toilet cleaner into bowl and scrub. I rinse the brush in another flush, too. I keep a spray bottle of vinegar hanging in the towel rail and spray the mould hot spots fairly regularly and walk away.

I use a big car wash sponge, a tsp of clothes powder detergent in a couple of inches of water and away I go. Bath splash over once liberally, wipe it again and it all slides off. Sink, benches, splashback, walls and door when I feel like it, glass bricks, shower and toilets inside and out. Don’t be shy with the sponge and it all cleans well.

I use methylated spirit on a paper towel for the mirror.

By the end of winter, I use a scrubbing brush on the grout of the glass wall after metho and detergent but it’s only once or twice.

More than 5 minutes, usually less than ten, depending in the wall situation.

Huhyou · 09/02/2024 09:34

Are people saying it’s weird to hoover bathroom floor or normal?

I personally don’t as I have boys that haven’t perfected their aim and the idea of contaminating my hoover with pee Envy.

TomeTome · 09/02/2024 09:39

I hoover my bathroom floor. Why wouldn’t I?

Laiste · 09/02/2024 09:42

I hoover - but i use the pipe round the edges (pull off Henry's head) including round the bottom of the loo and hoover properly in the middle. Mind you DH is the only male in a house of 6 people and he's got a pretty good aim so we don't get a lot of 'dribble' 😂

The thought of mopping an unhoovered (or swept) floor and getting all the fluff in the wet mop makes me feel bleugh !

ZenNudist · 09/02/2024 09:43

Just to say well done on the getting motivated.

The trick with bathrooms is little and often so you don't have to clean massive sludgy mess.

My main bathroom routine
Weekly hoover or wipe surface dust from floor
Biweekly mop floor
Whenever I need to use it or when I remember: spray around Bath with the shower head to remove surface dirt, ditto separate shower.
Daily or every other day: wash anything gunky off the sink
From time to time: spray all surfaces with method spray and wipe
Weekly, bleach toilet and disinfect
Daily or twice daily wipe surface dust or any nasties off my toilet.
From time to time discover a sludgy mess down the drain of shower and clean it all off.
Daily dry shower with a flannel after everyone used it to prevent mould growth.

It sounds a lot but it's mostly wiping /hosing surface dirt with the odd bit of disinfecting and mopping.

Chocolateismylovelife · 09/02/2024 09:46

I do a big clean once a week pretty much as most have described already. Then daily I make sure after each bath some spray is used and rinsed- I like Viakal as it gives a great shine and removes any soap scum.
I leave a cloth on the side of the bath so that any spalshes are mopped up along the top and sides of the bath.
the same for the sink, leave a cloth to wipe down after each use, if your other family members are old enough you can get them to to this also.
my bathroom gets very dusty so I just wipe any dust off the loo with tissue and flush as it sticks and clumps together if left.

Last thing at night, put Harpic or bleach in the loo and leave overnight.

Don’t stress too much as you will find a flow which Works for you. Some people scrub every day others just pick out some bits to do as they go along.
Do what works for you xxx

We keep a separate brush and pan for upstairs bathroom. Same with mop. I don’t trust my boys at all. I mop daily in bathrooms. With young boys and an aged FIL (lives in annexe but is in house during the day) the fight against the smell of wee is never ending.

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/02/2024 09:49

When we were selling once, I realised how grubby the white grout in our fully tiled bathroom was.
searched online and tried a paste of bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice. If you have the same issue, would thoroughly recommend. It was brilliant. Spread it on, left for half an hour then scrubbed with a brush and rinsed. They came up almost good as new and the bathroom smelled lovely 😃

GettingStuffed · 09/02/2024 09:58

I'm in a similar position to you. I bought a loo brush shaped like a golf club from Temu and it cleans under the rim it definitely works

Laiste · 09/02/2024 10:04

@Huhyou oh god i feel you Flowers
We have only discussed the upstairs bathrooms here. What i haven't mentioned is the downstairs loo ...

We have an elderly relative living with us and downstairs is 'her' loo because it's got all the mobility aids in it. No one else uses it and i have to brace myself to do the cleaning. I'm a total wimp when it comes to smells and mess.

Laiste · 09/02/2024 10:11

@MrsSkylerWhite how did you get the paste on? Did you just press it in with your fingers?

Our bathroom is all white tiles floor to ceiling everywhere (🙄)

I can't find a way to do round the bath. In the past i've squirted actual thick loo bleach all up the wall and rubbed a mop all over it to try to get it in the grout. But i nearly faint with the bleach fumes (window and door open even so) and honestly it doesn't do much!
