Are crumpets sweet or savoury?

can’t work out how to change the poll wording so-

YABU= sweet
YANBU= savoury

Savoury, they are in the same category as toast for me.

SaunteringOnBy · 07/02/2024 16:39

100% depends on topping.

The crumpets themselves are.neutral.

Have with bacon and cheese? Savoury
Have with maple syrup? Sweet
Just boring butter? Savoury
Jam? Sweet

So on and so forth.

QwestSprout · 07/02/2024 16:39

I thought they were like pancakes, they're just a delivery system for whatever you're putting on them. If you put spread/marmite on them they're savoury, if you put jam on them they're sweet.

Mumoff · 07/02/2024 16:39

Can be both, surely?! I can’t pick a side and betray either 😂

2Old2Tango · 07/02/2024 16:39

As a standalone I'd say savoury, but if you add a topping such as jam after you've toasted them, then they become more sweet. Savoury for me though.

Muffinbutton · 07/02/2024 16:40

Definitely neither!

It depends on what topping you choose. Neutral in the same way that toast is neutral.

Personal favourite is peanut butter and marmite, yum.

MonsteraMama · 07/02/2024 16:40

Absolutely savoury. You can make them sweet by adding sweet toppings, but the crumpet itself is a savoury item. Just like bread is savoury until you slather it in nutella.

bengalcat · 07/02/2024 16:40

Another vote for can be either - depends on the topping

NeptunaOfTheMermaidBattleSquadron · 07/02/2024 16:41

I voted YABU because they're both wrong options. Crumpets are just crumpets. 🤷‍♀️

KnowledgeableMomma · 07/02/2024 16:43

American here, so my vote may only count as a half-vote since we don't have 'crumpets' here. But Google tells me they are a bit of a cross between an English Muffin and a pancake here. So in that case.....they could be both. A neutral vessel on which to put butter and jam, or egg and bacon. My vote is both!

Moier · 07/02/2024 16:44

Savoury.
Well done with butter on.

5128gap · 07/02/2024 16:45

They are rubber butter sponges. They can be made sweet by putting jam on them, or savoury by putting melted cheese on top, or by placing them either side of a steak, a pork pie, a halibut or similar. Argument solved I trust.

Absolutely savoury. You can make them sweet by adding sweet toppings, but the crumpet itself is a savoury item. Just like bread is savoury until you slather it in nutella.

Or that Biscoff spread which ought to be disgusting by rights and yet I find myself eating it out of the jar at 3am...

Left · 07/02/2024 16:46

Totally topping dependant.

With beans and cheese - savoury
with butter and jam - sweet

Crooklodge · 07/02/2024 16:47

I have never tried a crumpet but I thought they were savoury.

Shodan · 07/02/2024 17:07

I think crumpets, in and of themselves, are savoury. Like bread. Or plain popcorn.

They are a delicious savoury vehicle for sweet or savoury toppings, such as honey on one and butter and marmite on the other, like I had for breakfast.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/02/2024 17:20

Savoury

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 07/02/2024 17:23

Can be both depending on toppings or flavours - sane as crepes

MaryShelley1818 · 07/02/2024 17:25

The crumpet itself is 100% savoury.
Obviously the topping added makes it a sweet or savoury snack.

TonyaD1986 · 07/02/2024 17:26

Savoury

FloofCloud · 07/02/2024 17:26

Both!! I love them with
Butter always
Marmite ... with butter

Syrup ... also with butter
Yummy!! 😋

DreadPirateRobots · 07/02/2024 17:26

Savoury, unless you put jam or honey on them.

BMW6 · 07/02/2024 17:26

Neither. The topping decides whether the whole is sweet or savoury.

Same as bread.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 07/02/2024 17:26

Second thoughts, use the dictionary if you want to win an argument

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crumpet

Defined as unsweetened, therefore savory is the correct answer according to Merriam-Webster

Definition of CRUMPET

a small round unsweetened bread cooked on a griddle and usually split and toasted before serving… See the full definition

Lighrbulbmo · 07/02/2024 17:29
