Are crumpets sweet or savoury?

can’t work out how to change the poll wording so-

YABU= sweet
YANBU= savoury

Totally topping dependant.

With beans and cheese - savoury
with butter and jam - sweet

I'm sorry, what?

Beans and cheese on a crumpet?

Of all the things I've read on MN this is the most shocking 🤣

TinkerTiger · 07/02/2024 17:30

By itself it's savoury.

It’s a game changer - you should try it! It works as a cooked breakfast or a quick dinner 😇

They are rubber butter sponges. They can be made sweet by putting jam on them, or savoury by putting melted cheese on top, or by placing them either side of a steak, a pork pie, a halibut or similar. Argument solved I trust.

‘Halibut’ made me laugh quite a lot for some reason!

themusingsofaninsomniac · 07/02/2024 17:41

BOTH!

Obviously 😀

KreedKafer · 07/02/2024 17:49

The crumpet itself is neither sweet nor savoury. It assumes the flavour profile of its toppings, much like a chameleon assume the colour of its surroundings. Pile atop it some jam, honey or a packet of Haribo and it will be sweet. Couple it with Marmite, cheese or a jar of anchovies and it will become savoury.

Essentially, a crumpet is a blank canvas.

IloveAslan · 07/02/2024 18:55

Either/both - it depends on the topping. A crumpet by itself is pretty bland.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/02/2024 19:03

A crumpet isn't sweet or savoury. It's a single crumpet, which by definition, is therefore a complete travesty and the monster who scarfed the rest of the pack needs to be hunted down and strongly remonstrated with.

However, the most essential aspect of consuming crumpets is the addition of something salty to either presentation - salty butter with jam, the American pancake tradition of butter, bacon and maple syrup, strong cheddar with butter, Marmite and a touch of tomato puree - it needs the different flavours to make best use of the neutrality. And an additional element of smokiness from ensuring they are properly toasted, rather than flaccid sink cleaning articles on a plate.

Ecnerual · 07/02/2024 19:03

Neither? Both? I can't bring myself to vote but want to see the results 😅

What do you think OP?

Georgyporky · 07/02/2024 19:26

Tasteless, IMO.
I much prefer a muffin ; or better still, a muffing.

ScaringMajor · 07/02/2024 21:57

Thanks for all the answers. I agree with those saying that it depends on what you put on it, but I believe it’s savoury until you put something sweet? It’s not neutral, it’s savoury! Like bread, savoury until you add Nutella and then it’s sweet!

Good job you didn't ask whether or not a Jaffa Cake is a biscuit....

Greensleevevssnotnose · 07/02/2024 21:59

Both, I have with honey, butter, cheese, marmite, PNB, fried egg, same as toast

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 07/02/2024 22:07

Can be either. I'll often have a crumpet main followed by a crumpet dessert.

My favourite combo is to have a crumpet with lashing of real butter topped with cheesy scrambled eggs with some finely chopped spring onion mixed through. Then for pudding I'll have crumpet with real butter and a nice tart raspberry jam.

Yum!
