Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

Who cares. Was brought up Catholic myself. Why do atheists bother though? Maybe a theme for another thread.

This is hilariously ironic. The very model of mansplaining.

I didn't say it was 'a gender-neutral term'. I said I use it in a gender-neutral way. I know what the original definition is. I don't always cleave to that.
But don't worry, now it's been mansplained to me I'll hand myself in to the language police immediately.

Please tell me you're a man. Please. It'll be too delicious.

I just love pancakes!

Caswallonthefox · 08/02/2024 16:46

I have just been and got pancake mix and lemon juice because of this thread

LauderSyme · 08/02/2024 16:52

Sorry I honestly don't understand the need for Pancake Mix? The recipe is literally just milk, flour and eggs.

Ha! No Grin

Just guilty of going horribly off piste with language, on this thread anyway. IRL my friends and I use the term about women as well as men and none of us feel the need to police it. It's just a bit of fun.
MN is weird sometimes.

Damn. That would've been too good. Grin @SecondUsername4me is right though, mansplaining is about men talking down to women so it's not gender neutral.

Fine . There's always last week. Or next month. Or whenever. Then again I'm up for a curry at Eid I suppose.

Are they English ones then if they are similar to the French crepe?

To me, the English and French and the Scotch and American ones look similar.

I make the American and the Japanese ones for Pancake Day which are similar but with differences in texture and cooking methods.

They're Irish ones. I've no idea what English or Scottish ones look like but if anyone wants to send me one, I'm happy to try them out.

American ones though are very thick and French ones are practically see through. Irish ones, at least as I learned to make them, are somewhere in the middle.

Ah no please. Just go and buy flour and eggs. You presumably have milk?

As an atheist, it's because I like pancakes.

It's also cultural, like christmas, easter and all the other celebrations that have their roots in christian tradition and were appropriated from pagan tradition.

Well practised on my nordy husband and in-laws!

<whispers> I don't like potatoes. Or tea.

Yes! Its pancake day!

Naillig222 · 08/02/2024 17:34

I've never heard it being called Pancake Day. Always Pancake Tuesday here in Ireland.

MN always surprises me with little differences between the UK and Ireland that I'd never have known about.

Grand so. Must ask my pagan friends about this ancient tradition which was ruthlessly stolen by the Christians.

Nipsmum · 08/02/2024 17:50

Ive got more to worry about. How many people really care anyway?

Flavabobble · 08/02/2024 17:54

Was always Pancake Tuesday growing up in my Catholic household.

Ελλe · 08/02/2024 17:59

I mean you’re right but a lot of people arent religious and just want a day to eat pancakes. Good for them

many people are non religious and follow lent, Christmas, Easter

like many things they may have always been traditional religious festivals but have become something that means different things to different people

We personally are Christian but still call it pancake day for the kids so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Because we grew up with pancake day so it's just as much a tradition for us.

Pancake day was already a much loved tradition for me by the time I decided I wanted nothing to do with the Catholic church when I was a kid.

My kids weren't christened but have always enjoyed lots of pancakes on 'pancake day' and now it's tradition for them too so that's why they bother.

Grand so. Must ask my pagan friends about this ancient tradition which was ruthlessly stolen by the Christians.

Boxty, which is a type of pancake, is a traditional food of the celtic festival Imbolc which is celebrated in early february. There was a roman festival around now too but I don't know what they ate.

In fairness, the christians really knew how to work the marketing part of recruitment. What were the local pagan traditions? Grand, we'll have those and add some extras on.

The reason Ireland has so many saints in comparison to some other christian countries is because of our polytheistic roots. They knew we weren't giving them up so the likes of the goddess brigid became a saint. They would never have managed to recruit if they didn't offer the same benefits in terms of celebrations as the local religion.

I think it's really fascinating the way it all evolved and one absorbed the other while maintaining many of the characteristics of the original. It's also interesting that many of the celebrations are now becoming secular and have lost the religious meaning for many people.
