Just that really, it's shrove Tuesday it is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting

@OchonAgusOchonOh

Well it doesn't prove your point does it because you said the Irish times call it pancake Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday.

I'm not sure what your point is exactly either, lots of Irish call it pancake day, most people I know call it that.

You implied I must be a 'West Brit' to call it pancake day which is a derogatory term, like you're trying to make out you're more 'Irish' if you call it pancake Tuesday 😂😂

Your point is offensive and unnecessary, just because a fellow Irish person corrected you and say that lots of people call it that here.

Slightly ott reaction to a pretty light hearted comment.

West brit isn't really offensive these days. Pretty impressive though getting offended at a word you claimed not to understand😁

Let me rephrase then

Pancake Tuesday, as evidenced by most of the irish posters here and the tv/radio/supermarkets is mainly called pancake Tuesday in Ireland. Given you, and the people around you, call it pancake day, I would be interested to hear what part of the country you live in.

Blimey, that crèped up on us

Brilliant.

Tbh I hate the West Brit thing. It's the same as Texans saying New Yorkers aren't real Americans.

I didn't claim not to understand the term at all. 🙄
I know the term West Brit and what it means.
I just wasn't sure where 'West Brit land' was referring to which is why I asked you where you meant.

I wouldn't say it's OTT either, those "well you proved my point" posts are obnoxious too so you're not going to inspire people to respond nicely to you.

I won't be narrowing down my location as I've previously recognized people on even larger sites such as reddit!

Isn’t it Shove Tuesday, because you shove in the pancakes

More people claim to have no religion in the UK than do claim to have Christian faith so Pancake Day it is.

Hopefully it will keep going that way! Atheism for the win!

kkloo · 08/02/2024 10:36

@PerfectTravelTote
I'll respond however I want to 😃 Absolutely no need for you to get involved in an exchange between other posters 😃

I wonder how many people know why we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

I don’t ! I must have been told at Sunday School . I could Google, but just thought I would let you know how lacking my education is 😂

evervine · 08/02/2024 11:42

That's correct @Fink Though Spy Wednesday is one of the least well known, apparently, even under other names.

SwordToFlamethrower · 08/02/2024 11:46

Not a Christian and don't like pancakes. Don't get the fuss for non Christians. Like pancakes? Just eat them!

Tryingmybestadhd · 08/02/2024 11:46

I think the most important thing here is we should be exchanging ideas . We cheat a bit and do mostly American stile pancakes kids love Nutella and fruit with chantilly , I love golden syrup , honey and banana . Last year we did sour crepes too with ham and cheese and cream cheese and bacon for meals . We will probably make a day of it too this year as all the kids are here including step kids so we can all do our own creations . I’m trying bacon and egg this year

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy ;)

many of us are not religious at all, or non-Christian, and will call it what we feel comfortable with. Pancake day for us always.

Some people get upset about the weirdest of things! (your prerogative, of course).

Easy peasy squeeze the lemon

Deadringer · 08/02/2024 13:58

I don't really like pancakes but can tolerate them on Pancake Tuesday if I have lots of crispy bacon with them.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/02/2024 14:03

peatblock · 07/02/2024 21:29

Crepes are far superior.

No they aren't!

They call them "crêpes" for a reason.

Emotionalsupportviper · 08/02/2024 14:05

HoneyButterPopcorn · 07/02/2024 21:49

Or you don’t need to say the Tuesday because it’s always on a Tuesday!

more importantly - favourite toppings…

lemon and sugar
butter and sugar

Golden syrup

ErrolTheDragon · 08/02/2024 14:10

No point calling it 'Shrove Tuesday' unless you're doing the shriving part. Which very few people are, even if they've a clue what it means.

Do you mind Easter being called after a pagan goddess, OP?

Agreed.

We do a 3 course meal. Start with savoury (cheese, ham and mushrooms), moved on to the in-between course (sugar and lemon) and finish with dessert (chocolate spread and ice cream). Yum.

All crepes. Anything else is an abomination in my mind.

Tbh I hate the West Brit thing. It's the same as Texans saying New Yorkers aren't real Americans.

Fair enough. It was meant light heartedly. I have friends who will refer to me as a culchie and I refer to them as west brits. It's more affectionate than derogatory.

OneTC · 08/02/2024 14:21

don't like pancakes.

How?! 😭

Dotjones · 08/02/2024 14:41

It's Easter Sunday so Pancake Tuesday is fine. It's just the day of the week it always falls on, same as Ash Wednesday is always a Wednesday.

Skinhorse · 08/02/2024 14:49

I hate Yule being called Christmas. Appropriation of our festival and traditions to suit a christian agenda.

I know that and if you'd directed it at me I would've laughed because I know you and I know you're not a dick. But if someone I didn't know said it I would feel differently - just like most light-hearted slagging terms!

ColleenDonaghy · 08/02/2024 14:58

Oh and I can assure you it's not meant lightheartedly by some - have had it directed at me by someone because I hate trad music and gaa. Unfortunately that person was from north of the border and I reeeeaaaaalllly enjoyed replying that I didn't need to pretend to like such things as being from Ireland I have no insecurities about my Irishness. But of course I understood it was different for those from the UK Grin (which of course I would never usually say).

Personally if someone referred to culchies I would assume it's not malicious until proven otherwise (hence my use of the term) but you make a very good point and I have taken it on board 💜
