Cancer inequality - Charles

Obviously I know life is unfair, but even so I am stunned. Treatment starts the same week he is diagnosed? Most of us have to wait 2-4 months. And I don't expect he will be directed to food banks when the DWP repeatedly stuffs up his ESA claim either

You’re probably going to get piled on on here but you are right

OrlandointheWilderness · 06/02/2024 14:25

Oh FFS, he is the king! Of course there is inequality in it, yes it is massively unfair but that is the world we live in. I'm not sure why you would be stunned?!?

PackingupTime · 06/02/2024 14:27

Tale as old as time. The haves and the have nots. Everyone should take life and critical illness cover (and/or income protection) from age 18 to mitigate risks. Or take out a decent private health policy. But appreciate not everyone does, but this plus saving mitigates some risk. One in 2 people will get cancer now so we have to take some responsibility to ourselves too. But anyway I digress.

EffortlesslyInelegant · 06/02/2024 14:27

Clearly you are easily stunned then. Of course it would be like this. Same as anyone else with money will get instant treatment. 🙄

Tryingtohelp12 · 06/02/2024 14:28

Is it really 2-4 months? My mum has recieved treatment twice and it basically started straight away? SiL also required surgery and treatment for cancer a few months ago and it was scheduled within a couple of weeks of her biopsy results?

The problem isn't so much that there is inequality, it's more the extreme level of inequality.

FayCarew · 06/02/2024 14:29

My father's treatment started straight away.

Don't you believe it, my dh had the option of waiting 6 weeks for his initial consultation after being referred on the apparent 2 week fast track referral, or 5 weeks to go private.

MorrisZapp · 06/02/2024 14:29

I was under the impression that private healthcare can screen for cancer but can't normally treat it?

MiaGee · 06/02/2024 14:29

My DH had cancer found and had it removed the following week....however he is not the King.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 06/02/2024 14:29

Well he probably won't claim ESA will he. And obviously the King isn't subject to NHS waiting times.

PickledOnionsRodger · 06/02/2024 14:30

People in power don't have to exist within the structures they create for the rest of us. They operate outside the rules and processes they create for everyone else.

A close loved one of mine is still waiting for an official cancer diagnosis after 4 months of on-and-off testing. Let alone thinking about any kinds of treatment. She's going weeks without even hearing any results from the last test.

It's very unfair. If people who had influence had to go through the same processes etc. as their subjects, then I'm sure there would be much more impetus for them to make change.

Speedygonzales78 · 06/02/2024 14:30

My mum has had an scan check up after her cancer almost 2 years ago, they've found shadow and her next appointment to discuss the results isn't until the middle of March!

DistinguishedSocialCommenator · 06/02/2024 14:31

Our King was in a private hospital, so it could be private treatment.

Waiting times vary area to area but that does not help those newly diagnosed.

Wishing King Charles a speedy recovery.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 06/02/2024 14:33

The BBC cracked me up talking about William having to look after his sick wife, three kids and go to work!! Ffs. Didn't think to mention the army of servants they have. I'm sorry for King Charles and his family, as I would be for anyone else, but let's face it, he'll have the very best of care and treatment there is.

Are you sure?!? 😂 are you just keeping it quiet?

Dont rely on it. I am a single mum, so always had life insurance and critical illness cover. When it came to it, it took 9 months and a lengthy battle to get a payout. Which is ridiculous, as I was not in any fit state for a lengthy battle. In fact, if I had not had POA in place, we would never have got it.

POA takes months. If you don't have it in place, get it in place now, or you might never get you Critical illness cover.

As for me, I was reliant on hand outs from relatives for around 6 months, between income drying up, and ESA getting paid. Critical illness cover, when it came, was even later still.

What was the DWPs suggestion? Foodbanks.

Yeah it’s unfair. I’m angry, not at Charles but at the system

Sad that us paupers have to wait months for treatment, people dying on waiting lists, people who could have lived had they not been waiting so long. It’s not the fault of the NHS staff who are working tirelessly around the clock

Pinkdelight3 · 06/02/2024 14:35

I'm 100% republican so not condoning the shitness of the inequality, but c'mon - he's the king, he lives in numerous frikkin palaces and is loaded beyond comprehension. You really think he'd ever be treated like the rest of us plebs??

CreateHope · 06/02/2024 14:35

@DistinguishedSocialCommenator of course it’s private treatment! He’s not going to be slumming on the NHS with the serfs 🙄

ComtesseDeSpair · 06/02/2024 14:35

You can more or less pay for whatever you want if you have money. That might be unfair, but stunning? It’s just how life has always been. There will be things you have which people poorer than you don’t, and may feel is unfair.

Oh wow I work in this sector and have rarely seen a fight. Would love to know what provider this was (for nosey purposes only) I suppose the flip side is if you had savings too or income protection you'd be ok. Best to cover all bases but at least you had some cover in place so well done and I'm so sorry you had to fight for the payout. Definitely POA is already sorted my end because I've seen the red tape involved when people don't have it. I do hope you're on the mend now.

Private hospitals and clinics diagnose and treat many cancer patients, quite often by the same doctor you'd eventually get in the NHS.

Itisnearlyspring · 06/02/2024 14:37

I am not sure stunned is the right word but the inequality is very stark. My Dad had to wait 8 weeks just for biopsy results and 9 months for treatment to start. Don't live in the SW if you are concerned about your health.

I imagine anybody able to access private health care would be able to start treatment pretty quickly, what do you want people to say ? it's pretty obvious money gets you things quickly.
