To want to put a shield round me before my important surgery in 2 weeks

Redandpinkstripess · 05/02/2024 15:43

I've been in pain for 2 years and after a catalogue of mistakes, I'm finally getting my hysterectomy in 2 weeks.
I am now terrified of getting ill beforehand. I'm having to work too and everyone seems to be ill. I am wearing a mask but my anxiety is through the roof. I wish I could put a protective shield around myself!!!! X

Is it that your hysterectomy will be postponed if you’re ill? YANBU and I Completely understand. And there’s tons of viruses at the moment. I would ask people kindly not to cough or sneeze on you, and take time off work if that’s a possibility.

insidethisissue · 05/02/2024 15:54

do you wfh? children?

Midnlghtrain · 05/02/2024 15:54

Oh no - fingers crossed you can manage to stay away from any bugs! Can you get yourself some good immunity boosting bits in? Keep yourself topped up on vitamins and fresh air?

FeralNun · 05/02/2024 16:00

I feel for you. I’m going in for an op tomorrow (relatively minor, but been waiting a goodly while), and I’ve been anxious about this.
I managed to get an infected arm last week which has just(!) cleared up thanks to antibiotics. Quite the ordeal and terrible timing. Was imagining sepsis and all sorts!

I really think that the anxiety you are feeling is the opposite of what your immune system needs, unfortunately. Do you use any meditation or breathing techniques that might help you stay as calm as possible?

wishing you all the best.

CatamaranViper · 05/02/2024 16:04

Is there any chance you will be allowed to work from home? My DH is also in surgery in a couple of weeks time and we've both been taking loads of vitamins and are starting to avoid unnecessary trips out (basically a sort of self inflicted isolation). Next week he will be working from home every day and I'm going to be doing all the school runs and food shops to help avoid him being in direct contact with people.
Sounds paranoid but this is his second date as he caught a cold before his initial date.

LimberlostLark · 05/02/2024 16:07

YANBU - you need to protect yourself as far as humanely possible.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/02/2024 16:10

YANBU

If there’s any way that you can work for, home please do that. Otherwise your mask (ideally FFP3 and change it regularly), good hand hygiene and ventilation in the office are key. I’d also be taking multivitamins, having plenty of early nights and arranging shopping deliveries.

Good luck!

TheGoddessFreyja · 05/02/2024 16:21

Do you get sick pay with work OP?

I'd get signed off for the 2 weeks up till surgery (just say stress or something and its not particularly untrue is it?)

Then that way you can isolate in your own little bubble at home and have your surgery go to plan xx

TheBayLady · 05/02/2024 17:46

Fingers crossed for you. I hope you mange to have the op. One tip for your recovery, don't try to rush, you only get one chance to get your recovery right. Flowers

Disturbia81 · 05/02/2024 17:47

Just wanna say good luck! Having my womb out was the best thing ever.

Redandpinkstripess · 05/02/2024 19:12

Thank you. If I have a sore throat/chest infection it will 😢
I've got this week off but have to go in next week. I will wear a mask 100% of the time! X

I can't unfortunately, as it has all happened really quickly. This is stressing me more than the surgery itself. I hope it all goes well for your husband! X

I had total hysterectomy age 38 ( I'm now 65).
Back then you spent 2 weeks in hospital now you don't.. but please be kind to yourself during recovery.
Good luck and wishing you a speedy recovery.

BigFatCat2024 · 05/02/2024 21:15

I 100% get it op, I was terrified before mine that I'd get sick and they would postpone (I think unless you have really needed one, you can't understand how utterly life changing it can be)

I can't really give any advice apart from socialise as little as possible, only do what you have to etc and remember that the lead up is terrifying for everyone (I got it into my head that I'll end up dying on the table) and for many of us is the worst part

Most of all good luck for the surgery

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/02/2024 21:15

Bless you, no wonder you are anxious. Masks when you can, open windows too. Hand washing to the nth degree, hand sanitizer. I stopped touching handles (long sleeves or tissues helped) and made sure I did not handle anything that other people may have touched.

MrsLeavemealone · 05/02/2024 21:19

Hope your operation isn't in Wales. Doctors have just declared another 72 hour industrial action in 2 weeks time

Remaker · 05/02/2024 21:25

I understand the stress. I was supposed to have an appointment with my surgeon tomorrow to schedule my hysterectomy but it’s been postponed as the surgeon has covid. I just want to know when it will be so I can clear my calendar for a couple of weeks. I feel so sorry for all the women whose surgery will be impacted this week.

Redandpinkstripess · 06/02/2024 15:09

You poor thing. I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you get a date soon.x

The crohnic pain has ruined my life and I'm so excited to get my life back. I don't want anything to jeopardise being paid free. I'm not afraid of the surgery, surprisingly! X

Just phone in sick, or get signed off by the doc for stress or something. Not really worth the risk is it, I'd hibernate at home personally.

imagine the impact on the economy if everyone took sick leave or stress leave before an operation!!
