I really don't know how to address lodger/loo issue

New lodger of a few days. I went away for Saturday night, just got back and the loo looks as if the last person to use it had an aerosol mechanism on their arse. Pebbledash is an understatement.

She's a young (late twenties) woman who has had a pretty crap (ah, ha ha!) ) life and I was glad to give her a room to help her get back on her feet but there's no way I want this to be setting a president!
But I'm also a wimp.

What would you say to her?

YABU: ' Sarah, get up the stairs and clean that blasted too'
YANBU 'I don't know who's been here and you're welcome to have guests but one of them has made a right mess of the loo. Could you get them to come back and clean it please?'

( I don't know if it was lodger or if she's had someone over, she's in her room and I've not seen/heard from her since my return).

I've got a silicone brush but those one-use disposable head ones are good too.

My husband used to have an aerosol arse and he found it very easy to flush and walk away without inspecting for cleanliness. Naturally it was me who ended up cleaning it as he'd usually left for work. No way I'd have gone near it with wet toilet paper though 🤮

NannyGythaOgg · 05/02/2024 21:28

I've never had a loo brush either; I hate them.

What I DO have (probably not used by guests) are water filled, empty, squeezy sauce bottles. (Ketchup/Mayo). Get a decent jet of water which removes any bits - big or small. Reflush and then a small amount of bleach

I don't know, I juat find it so weird that someone could walk away from the loo after leaving it that way?! And surely you know if you've had a poonami?! I'm by far the most house proud of people, I'm quite messy in fact but I couldn't walk away from that thinking "Ah well. Left my shit all over someone else's loo. Ne'er mind".

Make sure her 'brother' is informed that he needs to leave the loo clean and fit for purpose.

If you ever see him, tell him in person.

There are lots of men who think loos clean themselves magically.

NigellaAwesome · 05/02/2024 22:10

Please don't use the single flush toilet duck types. I blocked my soil pipe using one and it was a complete pain. Got the blockage cleared, only for it to block a further 20 metres down the mains.

IKEA do toilet brushes for £1. You clean them under the flush and bang them against the bowl to make sure they are clean after using. The trick is to make sure there is no toilet roll in the bowl as that really does make it disgusting.

penjil · 06/02/2024 00:19

Does the lodger mean brother or "brother".

I'm thinking it's a euphemism for lover.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 06/02/2024 00:51

Umm get the disposable ones if you’re too squeamish to have a permanent one.

No toilet brush (I just hate them) but plenty of cleaning products just by the loo on obvious display. And if it were me I'd have juat wiped it with loo roll and soapy water if I couldn't find anything. Although touch wood I've never had 'Aerosol Arse' on someone else's loo😅

If you don't have a toilet brush it makes it hard to clean. I'd get her one. You don't have to use it.

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 06/02/2024 08:15

As someone with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, please please please get a loo brush and put it where guests can see it. When I have an attack, a brush and an opening window between them let me leave no trace. Without a brush, the skidmarks below the water line can be seen from space and I have no way to remove them because they are below the water line.

mrsedgein · 06/02/2024 08:36

Never ceases to amaze me just how dirty some people are. No excuses ever for leaving any toilet dirty.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/02/2024 08:40

Maybe she hasn’t done it because there’s no toilet brush?

Viviennemary · 06/02/2024 08:42

I'd get rid of her. It's quite easy when you live on the premises.

I'm not sure how someone can clean a loo with neither a brush nor toilet duck. A brush is much more reliable.

Creeperofhabit · 06/02/2024 22:44

I'm scared this thread will break mumsnet with so many people on the loo brush brigade!
I'm going to get one, a silicon one I think. Don't like the idea of disposable ones.

“Sarah, just want to check that you’re ok as the bog looks like an arse has exploded in it”

Yes I’m fine - “oh good, can you clean the shitter then please?”

Yeah I’m poorly - “oh dear, hope you feel better soon but can you clean the shitter please”

This made me lol.

Despair1 · 06/02/2024 23:02

You need to speak to her directly re loo rules and need to check that it is in a clean state after use. If you don't address it now, it will continue and you will end up feeling a simmering resentment.

Sparklybanana · 06/02/2024 23:38

I don't understand why it's better to choose a minging toilet rather than a minging brush? Brushes all the way as they aren't dirty if you use them properly.
I can't believe I'm writing this.

  1. flush the loo
  2. brush around toilet
  3. flush the toilet and wash brush in the fresh intake to remove brown fish and toilet paper that your dh left from last time, tapping it against the bowl to help remove bits.
  4. tap tap to knock off as much water whilst flush is finishing
  5. Give it a sniff to make sure it smells nice
  6. Ok. Step 5 is a joke. Return to holder - add a little bleach to make you feel better
  7. replace when necessary
  8. wash hands.
It's also a good tool to push the water out down the u bend if you suffer limescale so you can have real fun with pumice to remove the waterline without it getting too wet.

but YANBU - the times i've had stubborn poo in a place that has no brush (usually hotel), I use loo paper to clean it as much as possible and cover the rest in the hope that time will remove it by the next flush - definitely seems harder to keep clean that way so vive le brush!

VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia · 07/02/2024 00:46

Or use an acidic loo cleaner for an hour to dissolve the limescale, followed by the brush, and then put blue blocks in your cistern to keep the limescale away.
