I really don't know how to address lodger/loo issue

New lodger of a few days. I went away for Saturday night, just got back and the loo looks as if the last person to use it had an aerosol mechanism on their arse. Pebbledash is an understatement.

She's a young (late twenties) woman who has had a pretty crap (ah, ha ha!) ) life and I was glad to give her a room to help her get back on her feet but there's no way I want this to be setting a president!
But I'm also a wimp.

What would you say to her?

YABU: ' Sarah, get up the stairs and clean that blasted too'
YANBU 'I don't know who's been here and you're welcome to have guests but one of them has made a right mess of the loo. Could you get them to come back and clean it please?'

( I don't know if it was lodger or if she's had someone over, she's in her room and I've not seen/heard from her since my return).

I don’t understand people who don’t have toilet brushes on the basis they think they are disgusting. It’s not as if you use it as a spoon for your cereal. It does it’s job to clean the toilet and then goes straight back into it’s little container.

Toilet brushes are rank. Bleach and a wad of bog roll - job done.

Lanawashington · 05/02/2024 13:41

Oh good another poo thread. Just what mumsnet has been needing

madeinmanc · 05/02/2024 13:42

Countdown to someone claiming they clean their loo brush in the dishwasher 🤮🤮🤮

OriginalUsername2 · 05/02/2024 13:43

No toilet brush? How do you clean under the water?

Toilet brushes are fine if you don’t mix them with wet tissue. Stick some bleach in the holder, don’t leave shit on it. Hey presto.

WhollyGlorious · 05/02/2024 13:45

I was on your side until you said no toilet brush, now I’m with your guest.

I’m not for anyone sticking my hand into someone else’s toilet. Although I might maybe consider it if there were rubber gloves readily available. More than happy to use a toilet brush, and 99% of the times I’ve needed one is to clean under the water which is surely impossible with toilet roll?!

CrispsnDips · 05/02/2024 13:46

My lodger, who was really messy, left the toilet in a really clean state when she moved out BUT a few weeks later (it was a toilet we weren’t using) I saw the disgusting state of the toilet brush 🤮

Do you have bleach and a toilet brush In the bathroom on show? If not put them in there and she’ll get the hint.

Blimey, why are people so scared of just saying something?

You don't need to leave hints, hoping that they'll get the message. Just tell them they need to clean up after themselves.

Oh yes. Get a toilet brush. You need to give people the tools to clean up.

Agree with this.

OP - you might hate toilet brushes, but for some, you're not giving them the tools needed to clean the toilet.

Edited

You don't need to clean under the rim at every flush.

I have a brush (the sort used for washing up) that I keep separately in a clean plastic bag. I use it after putting limescale remover under the rim. Then I clean the brush with bleach.

The rest of the loo stays clean with bleach.

I can't think of anything as yuck as a brush still with poo on it, sitting by the toilet in its little holder.

LillythePinky · 05/02/2024 14:01

Marks above the water line can be cleaned with bleach and loo paper and several flushes.

Below the water line, bleach left for an hour or less does the trick.

Overnight is better.

CrispsnDips · 05/02/2024 14:09

A caravan we stayed in once had no toilet brush and it wasn’t much fun cleaning one of the kiddies poo marks with toilet paper 😆

OriginalUsername2 · 05/02/2024 14:27

Do people understand you don’t leave shit on the loo roll holder? You clean the loo, flush the chain, clean the bog brush free of shite and THEN put it in its holder.

fliptopbin · 05/02/2024 16:26

I can just imagine this from the lodger's brother's point of view "Oh crap, I've just had a bit of an upset stomach at my sister's house, it has made a right mess, and just to add to it all, there is no toilet brush!" As someone with a bowel disease, this is something I dread
You say that you have cleaning products nearby and your lodger knows where they are, but unless they are on display, are you expecting a guest to look through your cupboards to find them?
I was with you until you said no toilet brush, and unless the cleaning supplies and rubber gloves are on clear display (in a size everyone can use), this is not a problem with your lodger, this could happen with any visitor to your house.

Creeperofhabit · 05/02/2024 19:09

Hardly my 'Guest' was he if he even came here at all I was away in a different county!

I might get a loo brush.

OP posts:
Creeperofhabit · 05/02/2024 19:11

@fliptopbin they are very much on obvious display. Right next to the loo. There's even a brush in there he could've used (not a loo brush), and washed/rinsed.

Okay try to sway me on this loo brush thing. You clean under the rim with them I understand that (I uae a specifically dedicated grout brush for that currently), how do you wash them dishwasher 😉🫣🫣?

stayathomegardener · 05/02/2024 19:20

I sit ours in the loo with bleach in the water to clean.

You definitely need a loo brush.

wellerhugs5 · 05/02/2024 19:22

I have this - it's fab amzn.eu/d/fKsRc8V

BobbyBiscuits · 05/02/2024 19:23

That is really gross. I would be alarmed by this. I had a male french lodger who would leave hairs all over the sink and sometimes the toilet(?) but never left shite in the toilet bowl or beyond.
She's saying it was her brother? TBH it would be better if it was as the idea of a woman leaving a toilet like that makes me scared to live in the same building! I know men shouldn't either but some do (in public loos especially...)- Tell her to have words with him and if he leaves it like that again he's barred from the house!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 05/02/2024 19:26

I have one of these. Also fab.

I really don't know how to address lodger/loo issue
AlltheFs · 05/02/2024 19:27

@Creeperofhabit you want a silicon loo brush,, not the old fashioned sort. They don’t need much cleaning.

fliptopbin · 05/02/2024 20:06

I have to say, when using someone else's bathroom, if there was no toilet brush, I would not just pick up any other brush and stick it down the toilet! Certainly not a grout brush.

fliptopbin · 05/02/2024 20:25

Also, does your brand new lodger know that the grout brush is for cleaning the toilet, if she has only been there a few days? Because if I saw a prominently displayed grout brush in the bathroom and I was a brand new lodger, I would use it on any marks on the grouting...

Creeperofhabit · 05/02/2024 20:50

Well I've managed 40 odd years without a loo brush. Parents didn't have one either. I'd never leave my arse-contents all over someone's loo, brush or no brush! But thank you. I am now considering getting one!

You just buy a new one when they get grim. Tesco value ones are as good as any other - they’re about £3. Replace as necessary. (See all the Greta T types come at me now…)! 🤷‍♀️🤣
