Anyone had pleurisy? On way to a&e, so fed up

worriedandfedup24 · 04/02/2024 18:24

I've had a viral infection for the best part of 3.5 weeks, awful hacking cough, coughing up green stuff, just generally feeling awful since the 2nd week of January. Earlier this week I started to get a horrible stabbing pain in my chest, just under my right breast, through my rib cage. It's markedly worse when coughing or breathing deeply, I'm having to take shallow breaths just to manage the pain. Coughing is reducing me to tears. I was seen by a GP on Wednesday who listened to my chest and said he could hear "crackling" on the side where the pain is and thought it was pleurisy. He said he could prescribe antibiotics just in case it was bacterial and not viral, but I decided I wanted to see how I got on first as I didn't want to take antibiotics unnecessarily. This weekend then pain has become significantly worse. I've never had a broken rib but I imagine this is close to what it might feel like. Every breath, movement and cough is agony. Rang 111 just now and they've advised going to A&E to be seen. I'm just wondering if there's anything at all they can do for pleurisy? Are there any treatments? Is it worth me sitting in A&E all night to be told to take paracetamol which I can do at home? The pain is unbearable and I can't go on like this. But also I'm not convinced they can do much for it.

Any experiences of this? Thanks.

Jeepers op, go to the hospital!

worriedandfedup24 · 04/02/2024 18:34

I'm waiting for my childcare to arrive for my toddler then I'm going to head over to the hospital. I'm so fed up of this, it's not how I wanted to spend my evening. I'll probably still be there at 3am 😭

Just go to the hospital. If you are in that much pain they will give you stronger medication for a start. Don't be a martyr just go.

Bobbybobbins · 04/02/2024 18:35

My neighbour had it recently and your symptoms sound very similar. Good luck! At least hopefully Sunday night may be a little quieter...

LenaLamont · 04/02/2024 18:36

My dad thought he was having a heart attack and it was pleurisy. It’s dreadful! Get yourself seen immediately.

worriedandfedup24 · 04/02/2024 18:36

@Bobbybobbins do you know what treatment they gave your friend for it? Is there any?

I had pleurisy years ago now and was treated with antibiotics. The pain was terrible. You definitely need treatment and I hope you’re feeling better soon.

Yesnosorryplease · 04/02/2024 18:45

It's hideous. I've had it a couple of times. I was given morphine for the pain while antibiotics sorted out the infection.

OldTinHat · 04/02/2024 18:46

I've had it, my DM has had it.

My DS15 had it and it came on at school. I took him to emergency walk in who said it was a panic attack and hooked him up to an ECG. I said I thought they were wrong, that it was pleurisy. And it was.

Mine came on when I was at work. Managed to drive 25 miles home and my now XH called OOH GP who then called an ambulance. Had awful tests (including an arterial blood test when I passed out) because they thought I was having a heart attack. I was 23.

It's really, really horrible and you have my sympathies OP. You can't breathe in because of the pain so you panic and try to breathe in more, then the pain is worse...

The best thing is to try to relax. Hardest thing in the world when breathing in is agony. It will go in a few days (days, sorry) but if you're like me and my family, you will feel that 'catch' every now and again for a couple of years.

I hope you feel better really soon.

OldTinHat · 04/02/2024 18:48

Oh and painkillers and antibiotics are the usual treatment.

seascape124 · 04/02/2024 18:49

They just did a chest x ray when I had it just to check and could see infection and inflammation. I have had it a few times. The latest was last year post covid. Gave me steroids and anti hiotics but I was able to go home and rest. Said the inflammation on the lungs is very painful. It does take time and rest to recover. Only you can decide on pain levels to whether you want to see a GP tomorrow. It would be sensible to start treatment tonight I would imagine if you have been advised to.

HungryandIknowit · 04/02/2024 18:50

I've had pneumonia - they gave me ABs and Naproxen (I think), a strong anti-inflammatory. You should probably go tbh if you're in that much pain. Also I think pneumonia is one of the leading causes of sepsis.

Spacecowboys · 04/02/2024 18:51

Best to get it checked out so they can exclude other causes. Pleurisy is usually managed with nsaids . Antibiotics only if bacterial infection present.

seascape124 · 04/02/2024 18:51

They gave me co-codamol for the pain and I did have bloods which showed raised infection markers. I had to have those repeated by my GP to show they had gone down a couple of of weeks later.

Americano75 · 04/02/2024 19:01

I had it a few years ago and it's nasty. I have asthma and I'm prone to chest infections but this was awful. Please, take everything they offer and don't rush recovery.

RoyalCorgi · 04/02/2024 19:02

OP, I've had pleurisy, very similar symptoms to the ones you describe - felt bloody dreadful, in fact. Antibiotics cleared it up in no time. Good luck.

Littlegoth · 04/02/2024 19:11

I had it. Thought I was having a heart attack. They sent me home with antibiotics and told me to take paracetamol and ibuprofen. I wasn’t impressed but I can’t take anything opiate.

niclw · 04/02/2024 19:13

I've had pleurisy when I had a chest infection that wouldn't clear. Just antibiotics for the chest infection and painkillers. It was agony! I feel for you but I doubt A&E can do anything other than confirm pleurisy after a chest x rays.

BouleDeSuif · 04/02/2024 19:15

I've had it twice, it's pure misery. If you can, sleep on the side where the pain is, that seems to help at night.
I had a lot of antibiotics for mine.

Garman · 04/02/2024 19:18

Jesus Christ, every breath is agonising you’re having to take shallow breaths yet you wanted to see if you maybe didn’t necessarily need the antibiotics yet 🙄

CantFindTheBeat · 04/02/2024 19:20

OP - why haven't you taken the antibiotics?
What are you waiting for?

You've had chest problems for a few weeks that has got progressively worse.

Your GP has prescribed them,

How bad do you have to be before you take them?

I really hope you get help and feel better soon x

BouleDeSuif · 04/02/2024 19:21

Just seen you've actually got antibiotics. Take the antibiotics!!

theemmadilemma · 04/02/2024 19:27

Yes I had it, which turned to pneumonia, which very nearly killed me.

worriedandfedup24 · 04/02/2024 19:41

I'm at a&e now waiting to be triaged 🙁
