Anyone had pleurisy? On way to a&e, so fed up

worriedandfedup24 · 04/02/2024 18:24

I've had a viral infection for the best part of 3.5 weeks, awful hacking cough, coughing up green stuff, just generally feeling awful since the 2nd week of January. Earlier this week I started to get a horrible stabbing pain in my chest, just under my right breast, through my rib cage. It's markedly worse when coughing or breathing deeply, I'm having to take shallow breaths just to manage the pain. Coughing is reducing me to tears. I was seen by a GP on Wednesday who listened to my chest and said he could hear "crackling" on the side where the pain is and thought it was pleurisy. He said he could prescribe antibiotics just in case it was bacterial and not viral, but I decided I wanted to see how I got on first as I didn't want to take antibiotics unnecessarily. This weekend then pain has become significantly worse. I've never had a broken rib but I imagine this is close to what it might feel like. Every breath, movement and cough is agony. Rang 111 just now and they've advised going to A&E to be seen. I'm just wondering if there's anything at all they can do for pleurisy? Are there any treatments? Is it worth me sitting in A&E all night to be told to take paracetamol which I can do at home? The pain is unbearable and I can't go on like this. But also I'm not convinced they can do much for it.

Any experiences of this? Thanks.

I don't think she has antibiotics. She was offered them but wanted to see (at the time) if she would recover without. Then got worse.

I hope you feel better soon.

FruitBat53 · 04/02/2024 19:51

I had it a few years ago and ended up in A & E on boxing day. Luckily they'd anticipated demand due to GP's being shut and there was a GP taking the minor cases. He listened to my chest, said yep that's nasty, and gave me an inhaler, steroids and antibiotics. Only I'm allergic to pencillin, erythromycin and a few others so this GP prescribed clindamycin. It cleared my chest but then left me with profuse diarrhoea that I needed a different set of antibiotics to clear....

It was horribly painful and I hope you're seen soon.

This is correct

Sounds awful OP. Glad you've been to get checked out again, hope you get some answers & treatment

worriedandfedup24 · 04/02/2024 19:56

The GP did also say he was taking a guess with the antibiotics and that they weren't guaranteed to clear it up, they'd only work if it wasn't viral etc (which I knew already). I decided to wait and see if I could manage without so I declined. Antibiotics massively mess up my digestive system and make me feel very unwell in a different way, so I wanted to see if I'd get better spontaneously. Rightly or wrongly, that was my reasoning. There's no way of knowing if they'd have helped or not.

My friend left it far too long before getting checked out, by the time she eventually seen a dr it had progressed and she had to stay in hospital on a IV drip for fluid and antibiotics
wishing you a speedy recovery x

Monr0e · 04/02/2024 20:01

I had it last year, started off as a chest infection, I was poorly for 2 months. It took 2 lots of steroids and 2 lots of antibiotics to clear and I ended up with an inhaler also which I used for around 6 months.

The pain was awful. I hope you are feeling better soon.

whoateallthecookies · 04/02/2024 20:14

DH had it, and I'm afraid it was grim. He was in hospital for a week, with IV antibiotics and painkillers. He was given tramadol, naproxen and high dose coedine for the pain. A friend who had it needed a chest drain for the fluid, so that's also a possibility (and something you definitely need to be in hospital for).

MargaretThursday · 04/02/2024 20:27

I had pleurisy after covid a couple of weeks ago.

I too ended up at A&E although I wasn't sure it wasn't a heart attack because it so painful.
I think they fairly quickly established it wasn't a heart attack, but then I had another 11 hours to wait to be told the only thing they could do (as it was caused by a virus) was say take pain killers.

Two weeks later, I haven't had anything like the initial pain again, and I do get twinges still, especially if I breath in cold air, but it's definitely improving.

Livinghappy · 04/02/2024 20:33

A crackle sound usually is pneumonia and needs antibiotics. They are likely to give an xray and blood tests to check CRP levels.

If caught early oral antibiotics will usually work but if ypur infection markers are high then it will need IV ABs. Then a follow up in a few weeks to ensure your lungs are clear.

worriedandfedup24 · 04/02/2024 20:44

I've been triaged and a nurse has taken bloods. They want to do an ECG next, so I'm waiting for that.

I had pleurisy years ago now and was treated with antibiotics. The pain was terrible. You definitely need treatment and I hope you’re feeling better soon.

Just came to write the exact same paragraph!

Cocolapew · 04/02/2024 20:56

I have Lupus and get pleurisy due to it. I use strong anti inflammatories and steroids.
You're best to lie on the sore side and a hot water bottle can help.
Hope you get seen soon.

Emmadaily · 04/02/2024 21:10

Hi OP
Hope all goes well
My mum had pleurisy years ago she was treated with AB she said it was very painful
Took a few weeks for her to get well again
Hopefully you don't have to wait too long for your results

LetsgoLego · 04/02/2024 21:13

It's horrible, and even worse is having to do deep breathing every so often to prevent pneumonia developing. Get well soon

User2292994 · 04/02/2024 21:21

I've had pleurisy. I thought it was the sort of thing that had died out with the victorians until I got it. Hope you get some relief soon

Greendoorsaremyfavourite · 04/02/2024 21:24

My mum has suffered repeated bouts of pleurisy. The dr usually gives her antibiotics & steroids (though she has asthma too, so it may not be the same treatment for you).
Hopefully you'll be sorted and home soon.

worriedandfedup24 · 04/02/2024 21:25

I've had an ECG. Waiting on seeing a doctor now.

Retrievemysanity · 04/02/2024 21:25

My friend had it. It’s usually due to an infection but not always. In her case it was due to blood clots so she’s on long term medication for that now.

megletthesecond · 04/02/2024 21:26

My sister had it once. It was clearly flippin' horrible.
Hope you are on the mend soon.

Ihadittoo · 04/02/2024 21:27

I had pneumonia and pleurisy at Christmas a few years ago, it's complete agony. Had a temperature of 39.5 and ended up staying in hospital for a week on IV antibiotics etc. Took months to get over it, I absolutely should have gone to hospital much earlier. Really hope you're ok OP

Mapleunicorn · 04/02/2024 21:30

I’ve had it a few times. It’s so, so hideously painful. Like being stabbed in the chest with a long rod. Feel for you Op. mine was treated with antibiotics which always clears it up pretty sharpish.

TedWilson · 04/02/2024 21:36

I know some people with relatively similar symptoms in my area but they have been diagnosed with whooping cough.

Yes this is how I feel, like being stabbed through the rib cage 🙁

But daft not to do antibiotics did you want to end up with pneumonia
