I don’t think anyone would but there may be no choice.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/02/2024 18:09

Step away from the internet.

Nobody wants that, just as nobody wants their kids to be part of the group that experiences a significant pandemic, but there is nothing we can do about it - and it's been a consideration/potential for discussion every year there hasn't actually been a world war. It doesn't mean it's actually going happen.

Tinkerbyebye · 04/02/2024 18:11

Tough then I am afraid

No one knows what’s going to happen, or at least us plebs

Stop worrying about it, don’t look at the news or google etc

anotherdayanotherpathlesstravelled · 04/02/2024 18:16

We've been pre war for years just not known about

You can't let it dictate your lives

decionsdecisions62 · 04/02/2024 18:16

It's never really been my approach to just 'not look' and I'm not going to start now at 57. I'm more of the 'get prepared' type.

OP posts:
Emeraldrings · 04/02/2024 18:19

Absolutely genuine question, what are you going to do to get prepared for a possible war,

Had the same thought. I'm not sure you can do much to prepare for war. Maybe dig a hole in your back yard?? I have immediate family who were refugees and left with the clothes on their back to escape. Other family had their businesses/lives taken over. Not sure they had many options to prepare for or control anything.

decionsdecisions62 · 04/02/2024 18:45

Well there may not be much but I sure as hell would rather end up in the camp of those people that had given some thought to it rather than the stick your head in the ground camp and hope for the best.

Lollypop701 · 04/02/2024 18:48

Well I’m going to live my best life now … within read … just in case!

Rosesanddaisies1 · 04/02/2024 18:50

YABU. What’s the point in worrying? Won’t change anything. Enjoy yourself with your family.

Not sure I understand what you think you can do to prepare. I guess that's my question. What do you think you'd practically do? I don't think people are sticking their heads in the sand. I was hot on it with the pandemic but unfortunately with war there's probably not a lot you can do to help yourself. At best exit your country fast if you think you can?

SisterMichaelsHabit · 04/02/2024 18:53

I think the best thing any nation can do to defuse the situation here is to just walk away. It's lesson one of most martial arts. If you can, just walk (or run) away from an attacker instead of escalating things to try and save face or to get one over on your attacker or whatever. Fighting should always be a last resort.
It's the best way to avoid getting killed.
If the US just fucked off, withdrew all their troops, shut down all bases, and stopped sticking its nose into things that don't concern it, and went back to their own country and let international events just sort themselves out between the affected parties, then we would have a lot less to fear. I don't think they know how to stop anymore.
Their ego and desperate need to control everything is going to kill us all, I think.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 04/02/2024 18:58

Why would you have children if you’re this anxious about the possibility of things like war? World war three has been talked about as being possible pretty much ever since the end of World War Two. We’ve had the Cold War, threat of nuclear missions in Iran, threats of terrorism, various times that Russia and China have been outed as threats in the news etc. This isn’t exactly new and obviously nobody wants their kids to live through bad things but most people do and it’s the risk you take having kids surely.

FrancisSeaton · 04/02/2024 19:01

Nobody likes the thought of war and what their kids and their kids may face. I don't. But what I also don't want is them growing up in a world where arrogant little shits can just blow people up and flatten their countries because of their beliefs

Naptrappedmummy · 04/02/2024 19:07

Who does, OP?

@SisterMichaelsHabit do you have any understanding of international relations or modern history? Confused

betterangels · 04/02/2024 19:09

I grew up in the aftermath of the cold war and was a uni student when 9/11 happened. I've lived with a threat of war all my life. Notably, not in a war zone. There's a hell of a difference. The threat of war, IMO, sadly comes with living in the world. I'd be more worried about the impact of the climate emergency if I had children. Naturally, we can worry about several things at once...

fliptopbin · 04/02/2024 19:27

Remember that both the UK and the US are in the run up to general elections, and this is a significant reason why we are hearing a lot more of these stories. Also we have a budget coming up, so the military are angling for more money to be spent on them.

Quite.

Bridgetoo · 04/02/2024 19:49

@SisterMichaelsHabit I think you need to do a bit of reading up on current international relations. Things have changed since the Iraq war era you know

Indeed. Or how ICBMs work? No amount of walking away will solve that problem.

Because that worked beautifully in Afghanistan?

Also what you wrote is horrifically ignorant. Tell me how the affected parties will sort themselves out?
World war 11? The Ukraine war? Do you mean just let people die?

asrarpolar · 04/02/2024 20:11

We are unlikely to be bombed ourselves if there is a world war. It would affect our ability to holiday and supplies of some goods and food. We may have to only holiday in the UK, may not be able to visit family and friends abroad and imports may be reserved for essentials rather than luxuries.

Floralnomad · 04/02/2024 20:11

It’s not a case of stick your head in the sand , I’m well up on current affairs but I fail to see the point in worrying about something that I can do absolutely nothing about .

asrarpolar · 04/02/2024 20:15

And there have been many times since the second world war when we have looked as if we are on the brink of another world war. Thankfully it has not happened yet.

Not condoning all of the wars the US and UK have gotten involved in but the unfortunate reality is that there's a lot at stake in the current tensions. Nations have to stand up for their values and principles when under attack. Failure to do so eventually results in someone else imposing their values onto you.
