To think we can have a Moses basket from the start?

Looking at Next to Me/bedside cribs but not sure about the longevity of them for the price you pay. We are having a full size cotbed in the nursery and a Moses basket for downstairs.

I don’t want to co-sleep anyway so the side down feature of a bedside crib is surely a bit redundant for us. I will however be breastfeeding if I can.

AIBU to just buy one of those larger Moses baskets with an extra stand for upstairs? I am thinking we can buy a bedside crib secondhand once baby is here if we feel we really need one?

With a Moses basket you need to get up to transfer baby after feeding. I always found Moses baskets completely redundant but wouldn’t have wanted to be with the next to me (being able to slide baby in after feeding without getting up (especially after csection)).

Coronado2 · 04/02/2024 17:24

I had a moses basket from birth for both of mine.

Lovingitallnow · 04/02/2024 17:24

I used a moses basket with all mine, the big issue is that they grew out of it by 12 weeks and the advice is to have them in the room for 6 months- so you need something as a stop gap. But I loved my Moses basket. We used a travel cot for 3-6 months. Got one with a top attachment so it wasn't as far to bend.

Merryoldgoat · 04/02/2024 17:27

I loved my Moses basket. Got more use out of it than the co-sleeper.

BertieBotts · 04/02/2024 17:29

That makes sense if you don't want to cosleep.

TeenyTinyWiney · 04/02/2024 17:31

I used a moses basket for my newborns and then into the cot bed when they got bigger.

Sil did the same. It's fairly standard among parents I know

Merryoldgoat · 04/02/2024 17:31

I got a space saver cot for our bedroom which did him fine to 7/8 months and he was a very big baby.

Punk4ssBookJockey · 04/02/2024 17:32

We had a moses basket until baby grew out of it then put up the travel cot (bought for later sleepovers at GPs) in our room until she was old enough to move to her own room. Could have gone straight in to the travel cot at night but it just seemed cosier in the moses basket.

Same here…the next to the bed things hadn’t been invented when I had my babies 😂

carrotbagel · 04/02/2024 17:32

Fine. Bit of a pain if you've had a c section mind.

WaitingfortheTardis · 04/02/2024 17:32

I had a moses basket and rocking and which was fantastic, sometimes if dd stirred in her sleep I'd stick out an arm and gently rock it and she'd nod off again. Dd was fairly small and she was in it for probably 4 months so I wouldn't spend loads on one, but it was great for that first phase. Also they are quite light for moving around the house.

carrotbagel · 04/02/2024 17:33

You aren't meant to move them round/especially not carry downstairs in a basket mind

DinnaeFashYersel · 04/02/2024 17:33

We used a Moses basket from birth till about 4 months then cot in our room.

shockeditellyou · 04/02/2024 17:33

My DD refused to have anything to do with the Moses basket. It was mainly used for storing water bottles and the remote control!

we took the sides off a normal cot and secured it to the sides of our bed, then turned it into a normal cot when needed.

Walkthelakes · 04/02/2024 17:34

I’ve used a Moses basket with all 4 of mine. They are all quite small and I used it until about 6 months when they started to sit. It was absolutely fine and babies like feeling snug In them. You can always buy a next to me if the Moses basket doesn’t work out for you but it definitely isn’t a necessity

Crikey, big babies or small
Moses baskets? 🤣 mine were in til 6 months, I loved using mine

Boiledbaconbutty · 04/02/2024 17:35

We had a Moses basket in the bedroom and chose a big old fashioned style pram. The pram sat in the lounge for day naps and baby was put in the Moses basket at night. By about 16 weeks they were big enough to be put in the proper cot.
it was just obvious and instinctive to us.
I chose not to breastfeed and DH is a night owl so he would bring baby to bed after the 1am bottle ( after I’d been asleep for hours) then I’d take baby at 5am back to the lounge so he could sleep till 8. We did pretty well for avoiding newborn burnout in those early months with this system. Which was so important as we had a lot going on in the rest of our lives as well as baby.
I’d have been too anxious to co sleep and the next to me crib would have made getting in and out of bed and enjoying intimacy dead awkward for me. Everyone’s needs are different though. You have to just choose what’ll work for you.

Sceptre86 · 04/02/2024 17:35

I've had both a regular crib and a next to me is easier. It's got nothing to do with Co sleeping the baby is in their crib, it's just easier to move them across to breastfeed or give a bottle especially if you have had a csection. Next to me cribs were not a thing when I had my older two or maybe I wasn't aware of them otherwise I definitely would have got one. We used a moses basket at my mums for dd1 and that was fine as she was a tiny baby, it didn't last long at all for ds or dd2 who were much bigger babies.

katmarie · 04/02/2024 17:35

I had a moses basket for both of mine, as I had no intention of co-sleeping if I could avoid it. I had one upstairs and one downstairs until they were about 5 montjs. I used them for both babies until they got too big, then they both went into a cot bed set up as a cot. I never fed either of them in bed, i was too worried about falling asleep with them in bed with me, so getting up to put them back to bed was necessary whatever I used. Both mine were very content in the moses basket, and it was easy to safely raise it at the head end when dd suffered with trapped wind, which helped a bit.

fuckssaaaaake · 04/02/2024 17:36

Also if you don't want to get an extra stand you can just put it on the floor

StopStartStop · 04/02/2024 17:38

Remembering way back in the passage of time... Moses baskets were a waste of money. Couldn't see how they'd be safe. Next-to-me cribs weren't around in my day, but they sound a much better bet.

TeenyTinyWiney · 04/02/2024 17:42

In what way do you think moses baskets are unsafe @StopStartStop?

Hankunamatata · 04/02/2024 17:43

Mine were so long that the moses basket didn't last. So with dc 2 and 3 we went for a crib as couldn't fit cot next to the bed

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyHusband · 04/02/2024 17:46

I didn't have a Moses basket with my first but I have with my second. I use it a lot this time around she slept in it up and downstairs the first few weeks then put the next to me up which I use as just a small cot upstairs and still have the Moses basket downstairs.

kernowpicklepie · 04/02/2024 17:46

Even if you don't want to do-sleep a next to me bed is brilliant. I had the tutti bambini cozee as it lasted DD until 8/9 months.
I did buy brand new but you could get a second hand one and just buy a new mattress.
A Moses basket, while cheaper, doesn't last as long.

Having the side down on the next to me is great because you can get them in and out easier.

I would look up about safe Co-sleeping just incase you have a baby that will not be separate from you. It's better to be prepared than to Co-sleep in an unsafe way.
