Do hotels in Europe have chains on door?

Meeting friends in Geneva. All arriving slightly different times and days. Was having a look to choose a hotel. I know Geneva is very safe, but looking at the pictures of hotels I can’t see any security chains on the hotel door.
Is this not so common in other countries? It makes me feel safer. Thanks!

This.

The things people fret about.

yes, i fret about it. Probably because when I was 11 I was left alone late at night and a man came into the room and attacked me. Makes you a bit bothered about locking doors and happier when you can see the lock.

I'm in the UK, been on holiday in Africa, Spain, France, Switzerland and Czech over the years and NEVER had a chain on the door of any hotel I have stayed in.

I really don't think thats standard at all, also they need to be able to access in case of emergencies and evacuations.

All UK ones I have stayed in have had do not disturb signs though if you don't want housekeeping coming in.

As a PP said you need a simple wooden wedge. It will stop the door being opened.

That's what journalists going to war zones are advised to use.

What makes you think that hotel workers don't have casual sex?

The PP who said "sexual assault exists everywhere men are" has it right.

Of course some hotel workers have casual sex, sometimes even with hotel guests. But lots more students do. (I have been both a student and a hotel worker)

I travel a lot for work and I can't remember when I last saw a door chain in an hotel. Some have a latch type thing. I always take a wedge door stop with me for night time use.

I also agree with @ZephrineDrouhin, check fire escape routes. I've had the misfortune to be evacuated from an hotel in the middle of the night. It was a small fire and nobody was in any danger, but you never know.

@VitoCorleoneOfMNMafia You really need to chill out a bit! Bad things happen but they are pretty rare. And they can also happen anywhere. Imagine living your life in this much fear.

Sexually assaulted at primary school, raped twice before 25: rare my arse.

I'm autistic and hence three times more likely to be sexual assaulted than a neurotypical woman. If a hotel employee misinterprets my attempts at small talk as flirting and tries to keycard his way into my room, that little grey ballistic nylon lock is my only line of defence.

I trust myself to self-evacuate in a fire far more than I trust myself to reliably give a man the "fuck off" message.

You're going to Geneva?!! You are completely right to be concerned about security OP - it's a hotbed of criminal activity. Have you checked that the hotel provides armed security at all entrances/exits...best make sure you do I suggest.

I think OP is perfectly correct to ensure no one can enter her room.
How odd to think she's being dramatic.

You've not read about the hotel employee (night shift) who targeted lone female guests and sexually assaulted them by accessing their rooms using a master key, then?

It doesn't even have to be staff. www.itv.com/news/london/2021-12-10/sex-attacker-who-tricked-his-way-into-womens-hotel-rooms-jailed-for-10-years

No, I must have missed that story when perusing the Geneva crime supplement in Sunday's Observer.
