Do hotels in Europe have chains on door?

Meeting friends in Geneva. All arriving slightly different times and days. Was having a look to choose a hotel. I know Geneva is very safe, but looking at the pictures of hotels I can’t see any security chains on the hotel door.
Is this not so common in other countries? It makes me feel safer. Thanks!

I'm trying to remember ever having one and I'm in hotels a lot.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/02/2024 17:10

I don't recall them on door of any hotels i have been in recently either in the UK or abroad.

Scalottia · 04/02/2024 17:10

I have never seen a chain on a door in Switzerland, Germany or Austria.

fluffiphlox · 04/02/2024 17:12

Mostly not, I would say.

Snowgone25 · 04/02/2024 17:21

I’m going to purchase that security lock above- thanks!
I take it there’s no problem with it in hand luggage?
Hopefully very easy to use?
Thanks so much!

Take a small door wedge with you and slip it under the door once you close it. Light weight & super easy to use.

useitorlose · 04/02/2024 17:23

Often there's a lever you pull across rather than a chain.

Snowgone25 · 04/02/2024 17:26

Thanks- I couldn’t see a lever in any picture either. Strange as I remember them abroad, although given I haven’t travelled since just before covid!

Most hotels have a second dead lock you turn inside the room so it can't be opened with a key/card from the outside.

This.

The things people fret about.

If not a chain, a door you can double lock from the inside.

Bs0u416d · 04/02/2024 19:29

Don't stay if there isnt a portcullis.

PonyPatter44 · 04/02/2024 19:31

When I travelled a lot for work, I had a little wooden door wedge. Not high-tech but perfectly effective.

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/02/2024 19:35

I find most hotels door these days have a double lock from the inside rather than a chain.

PhoenixStarbeamer · 04/02/2024 19:40

Don't think I've ever stayed anywhere with a chain.

VisionsOfSplendour · 04/02/2024 19:41

Why not call or email the hotel, I'm guessing that there's no one answer for every hotel in Europe 😀and you're only interested in the one you'll actually be staying in I assume

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/02/2024 19:45

Some do, some don't. Most that don't have a twist deadlock on the inside.

A wedge will stop anyone opening the door from the outside in the unlikely event anyone tries, but that will include a fire crew in the equally unlikely event you're unconscious due to smoke inhalation, so bear that in mind before resorting to that.

KreedKafer · 04/02/2024 19:46

You do realise almost all hotel rooms can be locked from the inside, right? You don’t need a chain. Most hotels in the UK don’t have chains either.

SaltyGod · 04/02/2024 19:50

I was recently in Geneva and my hotel had an extra door lock. It was a global chain hotel but not hugely expensive.

It wouldn’t cross my mind to worry. I travel frequently for work and have yet to come across a door that couldn’t be secured from the inside.

It’s Geneva, not Bogotá. You will be fine.

Obviously it’s good to be sensible, but don’t let it tip over into disproportionate anxiety or fearfulness

Intheshadowofthemountain · 04/02/2024 19:57

There'll be a deadlock, bar or chain.

That lock on Amazon malfunctioned for one reviewer and she was locked in for several hours. If that happened in a fire, I don't want to think of the consequences.
