I know it’s my fault, but WYYD? FB Marketplace

Just spent £50 on a Next to me crib which should’ve been £200 full price. The pictures the person sold it with are not pictures of the one she has, or maybe they were when it was brand new. They gave us it in the bag so we carried it to the car trusting it was like the pictures, because it was throwing it down with rain. It’s covered in horrible stains, with orangey brown stains on the lining under the mattress so it’s not even as if a new mattress would do the job (which we were going to buy anyway). There’s two pieces of dirty clearly used! cotton wool under the mattress and loads of pet hair on the whole thing. I have thrown better condition items away myself - why on earth would anyone sell it for such a cost?!!

We’ve completely wasted £50 and I feel so silly when my aim was to try and save money and the environment by purchasing pre loved.

DH thinks we ought to resell it at something like £30 and be clear the condition is used/fair. I just feel so annoyed with myself and don’t know what else I can do.

Really annoying when that happens x can you clean it up at all ? If you're going to get a new mattress anyway x upcycle it ?

Muchof · 04/02/2024 13:09

I don’t use FB marketplace so I suppose there is no comeback there.

Please don’t sell it in though, that would make you as bad as then, in fact maybe they bought it for £60 and sold it on.

CacenCaws · 04/02/2024 13:10

Can you not clean it up? paint it?

LovedmyRaleighChopper · 04/02/2024 13:11

Well which one is it?
covered in horrible stains and pet hair?
or used/fair?
what did their advert on marketplace say? If it’s been clearly misrepresented I’d be asking them for my money back.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 04/02/2024 13:11

I'd start by asking for the money back. And failing that I'd return it anyway and leave her to deal with it, and write-off the £50.

The advert said very good condition and only used for 3 months.

I’ve never seen a worse quality item tbh.

Call them out on it then

NamelessGhoul · 04/02/2024 13:12

They may have used it for the dog. I have one for that very thing. They tend to be given away on marketplace around here, mine was free.

VickyEadieofThigh · 04/02/2024 13:12

Too late now, but posting for anyone who might buy from Facebook marketplace in future. Do what my parter always does: examine the item carefully at the door and if it isn't what you expected, just say "No, it's not what I was hoping for, thanks anyway" and walk away.

LovedmyRaleighChopper · 04/02/2024 13:12

They lied then, I’d be demanding a refund. However unsure what consequences or conditions fb marketplace abide by

AhBiscuits · 04/02/2024 13:14

Clean it?

Nmw09 · 04/02/2024 13:15

Doesn't FB not have a process to protect buyers? Where did you collect it, do you know where they live. Contact them and let us know how it goes.

Windymcwindyson · 04/02/2024 13:17

Look for them on local FB page and ask for a refund with pics.

marketplacewoes · 04/02/2024 13:17

No I don’t think Facebook does. It’s my lesson learned really and I am at fault for handing over the money before physically inspecting it, I’m just cross because she must’ve known and it feels like a waste. Maybe I can advertise it honestly and recoup even half of what I paid.

I have messaged, she’s seen it but no reply. Which of course!

You can take all the covers off and stick it through the wash - I did that with mine before selling

LovedmyRaleighChopper · 04/02/2024 13:20

The item is damaged or unusable: Contact the seller to ask if they'd like you to return the damaged or unusable (e.g. locked phone) item. If the seller wants you to send the order back, you'll need to coordinate with them on who will cover the returns costs.
The item doesn't match the description: If the item you received is different from the description on the product page, please contact the seller to try resolving the issue.
If you're not able to resolve the issue directly with the seller and purchased the item using checkout on Marketplace, please contact our team.

that’s from fb marketplace. I think you’ve done the right thing by contacting the scummy seller directly for a refund but it won’t suit them to acknowledge you. Did you pay by cash?

Fionaville · 04/02/2024 13:28

I'd definitely be knocking on their door and asking for my money back!

Purplepander · 04/02/2024 13:28

God that's so annoying OP, must of us have been there.

I stupidly bought a stereo for about £45 a few years ago off marketplace when cd players were just about still a thing. Got it home and of course it didn't work.

Really didn't rate my chances of getting money back as DH collected it without questioning the absolute hole they lived in or if it even worked.

Have you anything to lose by badgering her with begging messages for a refund or partial refund least? Yes you might have no hope and she might block you but you've nowt to lose by trying. Try saying you'll have to buy another which is going to be really hard to afford now you've lost £50 on this one.. Stick a few sad face emojis in and say that you hope they understand how hard it is with the CoL at the moment. Never know, they might just have a conscience. Or just turn up on their doorstep with it!

This worked for me eventually and they accepted the shitty stereo back which I couldn't believe but I bloody well learned my lesson about checking things before handing cash over! Will keep fingers crossed for you!

Purplepander · 04/02/2024 13:29

.

EIIaJ · 04/02/2024 13:56

I wouldnt resell it. I'd put it on a free site or put it outside her door.

Deathbyfluffy · 04/02/2024 13:57

Nmw09 · 04/02/2024 13:15

No - it’s free, so entirely at your own risk. EBay and the like take a fee, but part of this fee pays for protection.

Ilovemyshed · 04/02/2024 14:04

I'd let the FB team know and, unfortunately, put it down to experience to check before you hand over cash.

You'll not get the money back sadly.

Jonas25 · 04/02/2024 14:08

It is sold as seen. It was up to you to inspect before paying. I would put all the covers through a sanitary wash and then sell it on describing the condition accurately. You won't want to use that item now but at least you might recoup some cash,

Muchof · 04/02/2024 14:32

marketplacewoes · 04/02/2024 13:11

I think you missed the point there. Previous poster was challenging why you would resell claiming it is in fair condition when you have just describes it as being covered in disgusting stains pet hair and used cotton wool.

OK so it is not your fault that it is this way, but you seem just as keen to con someone else whilst complaining about being conned.

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/02/2024 14:37

Oh dear. Hard lesson learned. We’ve bought some great things on FB. Most decent people have been keen to make sure we’ve had a good look at the item before we buy it. If it’s covered up, always ask to see it going forward (and don’t forget to ask if it’s a smoke free home too, been caught out like that).

When we’ve sold electrical items, etc. we’ve always filmed them working on the day of sale, too.

Can you give it a good clean and sell it on for £25?
